The Buck 110 Pocketknife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

 Hey everybody, Nick here, and today I've got a review of an American classic which also happens

 to work for Thrifty Thursdays, because this is a $30 knife. This is your Buck 110. And so,

 you know, Buck is not a brand I talk a lot about, because unfortunately a lot of their modern stuff

 just isn't really that great. But this is such a classic. The 110 was developed in 1963-64,

 someplace in there, and is used by a lot of people. And it's kind of become a stereotypical

 pocket knife. If you say pocket knife to somebody who's not one of us, they're going to think to

 themselves something probably along these lines. And so, yeah, it's an interesting thing, and so I

 figured I'd finally give it a chance to check out. And for size comparison, this is not a small knife.

 Here's your Spyderco Delica, and here is your ZT-0452CF. I'm putting the two of them next to

 each other. It's very apparent that this is a large-ish knife. No, no doubts about that.

 Three and three-quarter inch blade. Very, very large. But that's okay. That's just part of the

 charm. So anyways, let's just jump into the good, the bad, and the ugly of this American classic.

 All right. So, good. First and foremost, I do like the blade a lot. It's not that thick. In terms of

 thickness here, you can see your Spyderco Delica. It's only marginally thicker than your Delica.

 And so that's nice. It makes for a fairly competent slicer, especially with this hollow grind.

 So, you know, the blade shape is fine. It's a very good utility blade shape. Maybe a little scary,

 but this looks like something grandpa would carry, so it, you know, you can get away with it.

 Not so bad there. The wood here is not actually wood. It's the diamond wood, which is the same

 thing Benchmade used on the Valet. It's basically a bunch of plies of wood that are epoxied together

 to form something that looks woody. And, you know, it works. There's no big deal there. No problem.

 No problem. So, you know, that's a nice thing with it. The backlog on it is nice. It's further back

 on the knife. The mid-backlock on something like your Spyderco or a lot of modern knives is a little

 more of a recent innovation. The backlog here is way in the back, which means that it is kind of

 a two-handed backlog. You can't really do the Spyderco, or at least I haven't been able to

 find a way to do the Spyderco thing where you can close a backlog one-handed. This is a two-hand

 knife, and certainly there's no way to open it one-handed that I'm aware of unless you, like,

 grab the blade and flip and then you're just going to hurt yourself if you're anything like me.

 But anyways, it's got a good backlog and the lock-up is very solid. There's no real complaint here.

 There's, you know, some fit and finish here, but it's 30 bucks. What can I say? And the backlog

 has smoothed out nicely. It came bad, but it smoothed out nicely. And I'll talk about that

 in a second here. Another nice thing about this is that there's a whole lot of blades sticking up

 out of the handle, which means that it's very easy to open just two-handed. You grab, pinch the blade,

 and you pull, and it's freaking open. You do not need this nail-knick, and as you may or may not

 know, I hate nail-knick knives. I just can't do it. Doing that thing just bugs me. It's the feeling.

 I mean, the only knick I really like is this one right here who's talking to you. So the fact that

 you can open this very easily without a nail-knick is kind of a beautiful thing. And actually, for a

 $30 knife, the centering is pretty damn good, and other parts of the finish are just fine. I mean,

 the bolsters match up nicely, you know. There are some fit and finish issues, but there's actually

 some good stuff here too, which is a beautiful thing. And I gotta say, it's a pretty knife.

 There's a reason it's so damn popular. It's looking pretty aged at this point, and the brass

 tarnishes pretty easily. This was all shiny when I started, but you know, hey, it's not bad at all.

 So that's your good. It's got a nice blade with a good grind on it, and it actually came reasonably

 sharp, although I definitely gave it some help. The diamond wood looks nice. The back lock is

 nice and smoothed out well, and it's easy to open without using a nail-knick, which is just a

 beautiful thing. So there's your good. Let's jump into your bad. A couple of bad things. It came

 just gritty as heck. Like I mentioned, when I got it, and you open the back lock, it was a simulation,

 of course. So I had to work the action over and over again, and I used the same technique I always

 do for back locks, which is that you take some kind of a thick lubricating oil. I use either frog lube

 or even just mineral oil, pour it in there, and just work the action over and over and over again,

 over and over and over again. You know, I can do it while watching TV or something like that,

 and it'll start to kind of ooze out black gunk, which is the metal being worn away that's making

 the grit, and just clean that up with a paper towel and keep working it. Add a little bit more
