Fenwick HMG. I personally feel that all of these are better rods for the same or not much more money than a Mojo bass. Some of them significantly better than the Mojo.

I been looking at a gold Googan Squad rod to try out but for 160 to 180 I think I could get something from a brand with more years in the business that could maybe exceed the quality of the gold rods. 

So far lew's, abu and 13 fishing rods have been good to me but maybe it's time to get something with better quality. I'll be using this rod as a dedicated texas rig set up. 

Any input will be appreciated.

If you had 180 US Dollars to buy a 7'2 to 7'4 Medium Heavy fast rod for Bass fishing. What brand would you consider?

 Good looking fish. Thanks for the fight back, you go. Now that that does two things. Number one, it allows me to know what that lure is doing and where it's going

 Toss it, pulling it, giving it some good action. Then I change direction and that's where I get the strike right here. Pop and I've got the control of that fish. With this rod

 You'll see with more power how that blink responds. It's got that deep arc in it as it fires out and hits on target. Let's see how she works on some fish here so I'm taking it out about 30 yards. I'm gonna bring it down towards the water top in order to keep it low

 Rod has great performance when it comes to controlling fish, getting them up to me so I can deal with them and get them back into their environment. As light and nimble as this rod is, I'm really happy with the amount of control I get on the fish to get them up out of the water just so we're not damaging them or causing them over exhaustion. And right here you see a nice little brown trout and we'll let them go and move on. My final question on this rod would be would I spend my hard earned money on another one if I saw it in stores? If I'm being totally honest, I haven't seen this rod sold in storage yet

Fenwick Elite HMG 6 Month Review

 As far as fishability, the rod was plenty sensitive for decting pickups of both Spotted and Smallmouth bass on our canoe trips. I caught close to 60 spotted bass in AR and the two rods, caught close to 130 smallmouth in MN.  The fact it comes with a second tip is great. The M/L is probably closer to a M/ML and the Mediuim tip is a little heavier than a M/M, but that is subjective on my part

Worth the money

The weight and feel of this rod is excellent for a 3 piece travel rod. It’s light, has nice action with each of the 2 tips. My only issue is with the size of the rod guides. The one closest to the reel is usually much larger than the other guides; this one is not

The rod will not cast far due to the friction from the line and first rod guide. If the size was an inch wider, it would be like every other spinning rod made, and cast significantly farther

Nice rod, but one big flaw

  The reel seat The reel seat is uplocking on the HMG whereas it's downlocking on the Energy. I prefer the downlocking reel seat as the transition between reel and rod grip is more seamless, particularly if you think about where you grip the rod, the uplocking mechanism tends to be right where you grip the rod which means you're holding the fastening screws in your hand instead of holding the rod grip.  The rod blank The rod blank on the HMG is very thick on the lower end and it has a very fast taper up towards the tip, whereas the Energy is thinner lower down and has a gradual taper up towards the tip. The Energy is a slightly more powerful rod rated in the Medium/Medium Heavy range so would expect it to be thicker than the HMG but that is not the case

 I prefer the streamline blank of the Energy and feel it is more efficient in terms of use of material. I don't think the HMG needs to be so thick and can only put this down a weaker blank requiring more material for strength. The HMG and Energy both have a carbon blank.  Although I didn't compare the guides or hook keeper on the rods I have to say that based on what I've observed the Energy is a better rod overall and has design features that I prefer as an angler so I wouldn't recommend purchasing the HMG

Fenwick HMG compared to my Shimano Energy Concept

For less money the weight and sensitivity is just as good with a Fenwick HMG, Bass-X, or Dobyns Fury. All three of those rods also feel better balanced because we all agreed that the Mojos all have a butt section that is too short for their length and power. For less money those other three I listed are every bit as good or better, and for similar money or maybe $15 more you are into the range of a Dobyns Sierra, Fenwick Elite Tech, or higher end St Croix.

Gonna be getting one of these bad boys. I'm just not sure what rod to pair it up with. Was thinking of a St Croix Mojobass or maybe take it up a notch with a Shimano Expride. What rod would you guys go with?

 Got it yesterday, took it trout fishing at Lewiston Lake today. It is a flowing body of water with very strong trout, tasty too. I was looking for a few for the table. Landed 4, lost 3, missed at least 6 more, in about 3 hours

 I love the Alien handle, It is very comfortable both casting and fighting, as well as providing direct contact with the blank. It is very secure, with double lock downs. Anyway, this has the kind of power to handle a very nice fish, one weighed 3 lbs and I'd be comfortable with a much larger fish, yet handle the very light leaders needed in this crystal clear water, the length of the rod being a great shock absorber, at the same time as it being sensitive enough to feel the bottom and the bite when drifting a crawler or egg pattern in a riffle. I loved fishing with this rod

Will probably run you about $120 if you don’t hunt for the deals. Hunt around online for the reel. Hunt around at brick and mortar for the rod (I don’t trust shipping rods personally); Walmart is gonna be your best bet imo.

For a reel, I’m gonna shill for Abu Garcia. I have their Silvermaxx baitcaster and their silvermaxx spinner and both are worth the money. Silky smooth and durable for a good setup, that’s not too hard on the budget (in the grand scheme of angling gear). If you put in the necessary work to bust one of those reels, I’d say you’d have gotten your money’s worth

I now want to get my first proper rod/reel, and relegate the telescopic one to my wife which seems to have also gotten hoked on. I am mostly going to be fishing fresh water for bass, trout, etc. I was planning on getting an Ugly Stik GX2 and was wondering if I should go for the rod/reel combo, or get the Ugly Stik and another decent budget reel, and if so are there any recommendations on a good budget reel?

As for the rod itself I was looking at Medium Power and Medium Action. Do you guys think that's a decent type of rod for a beginner who is mostly going to be fishing lakes and ponds for bass, trout, and the like, or would Fast Action be better? 

Finally, are there any disadvantages in getting a 2 piece rod as opposed to a 1 piece? I imagine the advantage is that the 2 piece is more compact, but are they easier to break, for example?

For hooks I have absolutely no idea about sizes or what other considerations I need to think about.  I think the hooks for a carolina rig would be different than the ones for a grub or worm but not sure on size at all.  Seems like there are weedless hooks for when I am in an area fishing in weeds. I think that generally the kits you might get on amazon would give me a lot of things I don't need though might be a good situation here even though I really have no clue what size to use

I've read the guides but they are very helpful but (rightfully) very flexible to area so I thought that maybe a specific example could be good.  Just need some basic options to show up and have some fun on a nice day.  I have some flexibility on budget, the goal here is to eventually be able to go camping and bring some gear and try to catch some dinner when we are on water.  So if spending a little more to get something a little more durable then that is OK
