 Otherwise it's a nice pen, although weighted toward the top (as another reviewer pointed out in a review of the blue/silver version); the Parker Sonnet ballpoint I have is better balanced. Uses twist action and comes filled with a black medium Parker Quinkflow refill.

A sad epilogue to a great original

 Only works with bottled ink, but even by writing several pages (probably 20 at max) each day, I fill it once a month (or every 2 weeks depending on usage). The MK II model I use is less expensive and plain than the MK V that's around on eBay for around 40 bucks, even though the latter is worth every penny it costs.

I'm looking for an sustainable alternative to a disposable ball point pen, and fountain pens seem to be the best option. Generally, I need this pen to take notes in class, without much hassle. Hence why I chose the Pilot Metropolitan. This being said, I've seen a lot of posts on this sub reddit saying that fountain pens are not practical, and are really just good for hobby and journaling.

I'm not sure whether or not I should listen to these posts, or other posts/websites that say fountain pens are a good replacement for ball point pens. I was hoping someone could give me an opinion on the topic.

The answer to my question is that fountain pens are not ball point pens, and must be handled differently. However, fountain pens are practical and can be used as a replacement for ballpoint pens. They can be collected as a hobby, but this is not their only use.

Some other things about fountain pens:

The Pilot Metropolitan in specific is not a sustainable replacement for a fountain pen unless you refill the carriages with a syringe.

Some good ink brands are Parker, Walter, Diamine, Sailor, and Pelikan.

If you need to write more than a dozen pages a day, a cartridge/converter pen like the Pilot Metropolitan would not be suitable.

 I have no real requirements other than a nice, interesting writing experience (either because it's a flex/stub or because it writes beautifully, like a Parker 51, or whatever other reason), but I admit I'll start balking if the price climbs too high unless there's a good justification - I plan on using this pen, so something like a Namiki is out of the question since I'd be terrified to get those pieces of art dirty or drop it or lose it. I don't know what to choose, though, so I'm going to put it out there for opinions.

The grip would be a concern, however if you like the experience on the Parker 51 I’d be inclined to say you’d like the one on the Lamy, it’s also a hooded nib, after all.

If you could only have one pen, what would you pick?

This is my favorite pen gifted to me by my twins for Mothers day. Easy to use, I use it daily, but I did notice if o do not use it for a couple days it's hard to get the ink going. Nothing running it under hot water won't fix.

 Feels too light and cheap to be what the Parker pens used to be. Squeals when you turn to open and close. Quality definitely lacking. Amazon has other pens of better quality under old brand names

 As I said, I'm not actually seeing Mom with this particular number sixty five. Whether that again that might relate to the age of the pen being 1965 I am not too sure and again it will be interested to find out if anybody knows knows what that number actually means if we open the pen up here again. There's some slight discrepancies on this particular pen because although I date it to 1964, the earlier Park is 65 at sorry Park is seventy five models had a metal thread to the bottom to the bottom of this section here and as you can see, this particular one has a plastic thread which makes this particular pen slightly later than maybe. Why I Actually, maybe think from 1964 as I say the early ones had a metal a metal thread

 As it says there Park is 75 your key to better writing which in effect relates to this little object here which we'll show in a moment. And inside what you've got is the filling instructions and how to fill the pen, etc. You've got the guarantee. And as I say this little object which we'll show in a moment inside the case, What you'll see there you've got this beautiful sterling silver Parker Sir 75 fountain pen which comes in this gorgeous crosshatch grid pattern or as some people call it the sisal pattern

 and again, if we turn it round you'll notice this particular pen has the the M that were actually we mentioned earlier whereas the other pen has this has this number sixty five which is a little bit confusing. so sorry. I've actually mismatched them. So as I say this is a lighter version here them as with the new Utley sorry the earlier version on this particular one that we actually showed you the the hallmarks to the to the barrel

 And but as I say these particular ones are the flat ones which indicate that it's one of the earlier models. the pattern of the pen if we can actually bring it quite close up for you as you can see it comes in this well this grid pattern in sterling silver and I believe on the earlier models the black that you can actually see here was actually enameled to make the crosshatch more pronounced and then the later pens are believed the the black lines were more down to the patina if you like of the aging silver which highlighted the the grid pattern. If you if you can see to the top there it's got this lovely long standard Parker clips of the top there. Okay now let's show you the the imprints here
