 This is unquestionably a better smartwatch experience. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise. But when it comes to like the running stuff and the trail stuff, that's where it sort of gets a bit complicated. So if you look at, for example, Garmin's Forerunner and Phoenix lineup, those have far more features than this does in terms of those running kind of areas

 The first piece is for non-workout usage. And that shuts off a bunch of things I put in the screen right now that gives you more extended battery life. It basically doubles the battery life from the claimed 18 hours up to 36 hours. But then in workout mode, it also extends things as well

 It'll even automatically transition you from swim to bike to run, though there is also a manual transition option as well. And then they also added editable structured workouts. So you can create your own structured workouts on there, for example, doing, you know, 4x800 or 8x800 or whatever you want on the watch itself. That's not something that's available yet on the phone to create, and we'll talk about that in just a second as well

 This includes doing a triathlon and a deep dive into the running power. And we'll get to all that in just a moment. The first thing to know though is that the Apple Watch Series 8 is $399, or it starts there anyways, $499 for the cellular edition. That's a bit more than the newer updated Apple Watch SE, which is $249, but of course less than the also announced Apple Watch Ultra edition, which is $799

I suspect what we'll see is something like Dexcom G7 able to communicate directly to watch. I highly doubt we'll see a watch and to non-invasively continuously sense glucose with any degree of accuracy.

Damn, if they get blood glucose practically the only thing left is blood pressure and the Apple Watch is practically a complete vital monitor at a hospital. Absolutely insane how much is packed into such a tiny device. It truly is a computer engineering marvel in its own right.

It could possible report low/in range/high but I would put money against any kind of precise/accurate measurement with a mmol read out as that would be a huge FDA clearance and liability. I don't think it's possible yet but I would like to be proven wrong. After all, this is Apple, the same company that revolutionised the smartphone market against other more developed and established companies. So I'll be cautiously optimistic.

If Apple support compatibility with insulin pumps like the t:slim X2 it could be the better choice than Dexcom. But without this compatibility, I would still prefer Dexcom.

  
This is currently one of the reasons why I want to switch from the FreeStyle Libre 2 to the Dexcom G6.

Even having the Series 6 I’m so ready for the Series 7, for the it’s the most useful Apple device that I currently have. I really love it. Please improve the battery life, although it’s pretty good right now.

There's a lot of naysaying from folks that indicate they are experts.  As I understood it, technology for non-invasive glucose monitoring using near-infrared Spectroscopy has been on the research block for many years, and there has been recent progress (perhaps not discussed widely due to the pandemic.)

The most direct example I have to share is this write-up on [Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy based on Internet of Things using Machine Learning](https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9042479).  Apple Watches are a simple to use device that are reliably connected to the internet and sending telemetry back to Apple. There has never in history been access to this reliable of a device with this much information about the wearer, so there's no reason to suspect advancements are impossible.

The article indicates that Apple has patents pending in this space, which I doubt would be filed if they weren't on the right path.

There's been constant work on this, I've seen several different approaches.  Large research prototypes are going to be dramatically different than what Apple can accomplish.  Dramatically.

 Things like better water resistance, it's supposed to have a much brighter display, be more durable, it has higher quality GPS. So that would be my recommendation if you want to get a fancy cool watch to show off. And if you want a budget watch, the Apple Watch SE has a better processor inside, but keep in mind that it doesn't have an always-on display, which I find useful. It doesn't have temperature, but it has heart rate, it doesn't have ECG, which is not something that everyone's going to be using, but it has a lot of the basic things

 Amazon's Halo fitness bands have temperature tracking, and Samsung's Galaxy Watch 5 does as well. But what it does may not be exactly what you think. First of all, this type of technology does not do absolute temperature tracking in terms of like, you know, what, you know, are you 100 degrees or 98.6? It's a relative thing that calibrates to you over time

However, I bought it BEFORE I realized that the new s8 is likely to be released in September. I'm torn. I'm still within my return window, but I really wanted/needed a watch NOW and I'm hesitant to return it. What would y'all do?

 So this is the 45 millimeter Apple Watch Series 8. My old Apple Watch is the 41 millimeter, which I did pre-order the gold 41 millimeter. So I basically just did a simple upgrade. Now the number one thing that I use my Apple Watch for, yes it's great for tracking health and your fitness but I use it to find my iPhone more times than I would ever like to admit, at least five times a day

I started swimming again since the pools are starting to open, and I'm looking for a smartwatch or band, not too expensive, to track basically how many laps or the total length I'm swimming, to check my improvement.

It’s not much of an upgrade over the Series-7

 I run a lot. And I really dug the ability to scroll through multiple workout views, check which heart rate zone I was in, and create my own custom interval workouts. Good news for hikers, watchOS 9 includes a redesigned compass app, and some of those fancy features coming to the Apple Watch Ultra will also be available on the Series 8. While I loved a lot of what watchOS 9 brought to the table, again, it is a software update

 It's still not quite at the level as, say, a Fitbit or a Ring, but it's a lot better than it used to be. If you've been diagnosed with AFib, the watch can also now passively monitor your AFib history. On the fitness front, watchOS 9 adds some new running metrics like running power, vertical oscillation, stride length, and ground contact time. You can also monitor elevation changes and your heart rate zones directly from the wrist
