After much debate, I went with the Asus rt-ac86u and it was great - for 3 weeks. It managed my router vpn and IoT array well without any issues.

Much better than the Orbi's that I had and abandoned due to bad firmware. The problem with Orbi's for me was that Netgear would put out bad firmware releases that were automatic upgrades, and then you had to wait until the next release to get major problems corrected. And Netgear usually broke other things in the process of fixing something. Asus firmware isn't perfect by any means, but upgrades aren't mandatory and you can revert to previous firmware if you want or need to do that.

The ZenWiFi AX is optimized for wireless backhaul, best wireless that I've had. The latest firmware also added the ability to have 160MHz. channel width wireless backhaul without having use DFS channels, and that's working great for me.
