 First of all if you're transferring large files across the network via Wi-Fi, generally speaking yes this would be the best use case. But for those people who actually do that they tend to use the wired option and this one would do absolutely well. For testing purposes I took a 60 gigabyte file and I transferred the file from the NAS box that is connected via a gigabit cat6 cable to the router via Wi-Fi 6 onto a laptop with an SSD. Please note your own speed may vary on the speed of your SSD or hard drive

 Many standard hard drives have a speed of 80 megabytes per second write speed, hence SSD can hit up to 300 400 and a very good PCIe 4 or 3 SSD can hit up to a thousand.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi's if you needed to be separate but the Wi-Fi will be able to decide what is the best connection type for the device that it connects and you shouldn't have to worry about separating it. Both devices give you a warning that if you are using a non Wi-Fi 6 device and it has maybe aged not too well you might see some connectivity issues and that's a concern but at this stage in time most devices even with Wi-Fi 5 will be able to connect to these routers and you're kind of future-proofed for the future especially with this one because it can significantly hold more devices on its Wi-Fi network without sacrificing the bandwidth and speed so if you've got a household full of people who consistently download legal things then this will last very well throughout that time. The other major difference that I think is reasoning for the price increase is this has a Broadcom Chimp and that means that the speed of your internet will potentially be maybe five to ten percent faster but also more stable

 One main difference is you get two less actual antennas and the weight is significantly different. This is a really heavy device, it's packed with a lot of stuff but it looks exactly the same. So what is the main difference? Well the biggest difference that you could potentially notice but I don't believe you will is the fact that the AX3000 has a much higher Wi-Fi 6 speed, almost twice that of the actual AX1800. But is that a reason to choose either one of these? I actually don't think so

 An interesting feature is connecting if that than this to your router though I couldn't quite work out what the point would be if you connected your Alexa to this and I guess you could ask hey Alexa what's my internet speed today just like you end up asking hey Alexa what's the weather like. Friends thank you very much for watching I hope this helped you to decide which device is right for you obviously the price difference is significant but I would say that if you're considering between these two and you're not gonna have a lot of people using Wi-Fi and you still want Wi-Fi 6 performance this one is here and it's ready to go for you. AX1800 is probably my choice out of these two routers but I would say that if I was going for something that is just balls to the walls great I would choose this Broadcom ASUS AX3000 and you know what it doesn't look like a gaming router but it's got the exact same features that you might see in those fancy spider looking ones at a much lower price.  So here on the settings this is where you're going to be able to change a lot of those router settings and features a lot of the settings here are very similar to what you get on the web-based GUI some of them are on here not all of them of course the web GUI is where you're really going to be able to change a lot of those specific options and features. So I've had ASUS routers for quite a long time I've been using ASUS routers for the past 10 years or so they've been fairly reliable for the most part I've never had any major issues where I wanted to completely move to a different type of router so I think the type of router you're going to need in your home is really going to depend on you and your needs and obviously the size of your home bigger family and bigger home you have you're going to need a router to support all those devices and be able to reach wi-fi coverage throughout the whole home so that's going to be my review on the ASUS RT-AX58U. I've been using it for about a week now and I've been pretty happy with it I'm definitely getting better speeds and better signal especially using the AI mesh system by using my old router that I had and converting that into an AI node now I can get signals all the way from the top of my home all the way to the bottom. Hi. Hoping to get advice on a new setup. I'm completely ignorant about networking and get pretty confused researching. 

I have three teenage kids. Two are heavy gamers through Steam. They also do online school until Covid clears up. 

I work from home and a heavy Zoom user for my job. My wife too. And that's normal even in non-covid times. 

My retired mother in law lives in our basement apartment. She is a light user, but has terrible wifi right now. 

We stream media like Spotify and Netflix, but no real home automation outside of a couple Alexa and two ecobee thermostats. 

House has three levels and is about 3500 sf. 

Current setup has a Spectrum provided router and modem in my office upstairs. The kids all are hardwired from there to their rooms. Really bad (terrible) wifi coverage throughout the house. One expander to help MiL in basement. 

I am moving us to a new Ting 1000mbps install. They just installed the modem on the main floor today. He suggested I purchase the TP Link M5 Deco three pack. Put one on each floor. Said I could hardwire the kids gaming machines from the satellite Deco upstairs. 

My question is : is that the right choice? Did he tell me good info? Will my kids upstairs still have solid throughout for gaming? Any better suggestions out there?

Finally, I don't really want to spend more then about $350 for this setup, if I can.

Thank you for the great responses. So, my path forward looks to be to hardwire everything that I can and setup an AP or two to get consistent wifi coverage across all three levels. 

The modem comes in by my main tv in the living room. That will help me hard wire the entertainment right there to the router on the main floor. The router will be near the couch so that should be solid coverage for wifi on the main floor. The master bedroom is on the main floor too so I can just pass a cable through the wall there to reach the bedroom TV and my wife&#39;s work laptop. Again, with the router just in the other side of the wall, I should have enough wifi for our needs. 

I&#39;ll then run a cable from the router up to my office and put a poe switch there. That way I can setup an AP in the hall up here to reach the rooms. The 17yo&#39;s room over the garage gets bad converage now and would prolly get worse with the router moving to the main floor in the new setup, so an access point seems necessary here. 

I&#39;ll hardwire the gaming rigs from the switch in the office as well as my work laptop since I&#39;m on Zoom so much. 

I&#39;ll prolly replace the current cable we ran through the attic to make sure it&#39;s CAT 6.

I can then drop a cable from the router down to the basement and put in an AP there to make sure the apartment has full wifi coverage. She doesn&#39;t need anything hardwired since she still relies primarily on Fox News on cable tv and a landline in the kitchen.

Help a Noob with Mesh or better solution

 Signal quality 5/5 Stability 2/5 Ease of use 4/5 Range of signal 5/5 Overall product 4/5  One con is that once in a while, I get a red disconnect light, usually after 2-4 weeks of use. I have to either power cycle the cable modem, the router or both before getting the connection back. While that particularly does not happen a lot, as a precaution reboot your router and cable modem once a week, OR in my case 1-2 times a month.  Once I started to reboot regularly, the issue resolved itself unless my ISP (spectrum) is unstable

First the pros I get coverage for the whole house, plus outside of the house too in the alley and the front porch. This was a easy setup using the Ai Mesh software with other ASUS Ai mesh compatible routers. Signal quality 5/5 Stability 2/5 Ease of use 4/5 Range of signal 5/5 Overall product 4/5  One con is that once in a while, I get a red disconnect light, usually after 2-4 weeks of use. I have to either power cycle the cable modem, the router or both before getting the connection back

Solid product however....

 When you look for a router, you want to look for the latest technology. So WiFi 6 is the latest technology. Even if you don't have a device that has WiFi 6, if you eventually get one, you don't want to buy a new router just to benefit from the new WiFi standard. So buying the newest standard always helps the most

 My internet provider provides up to about 900. So even then I can really take advantage of the full speed it's able to transfer through WiFi. Just to give you guys an example. And then the third thing is about this router specifically that I liked is that this router specifically the 160 megahertz band is kind of very useful because it literally powers through like if you're in a very density populated area, there's a lot of WiFi signals that helps a lot and keeps your signal consistent and strong

 So really if you use WiFi 6 and use 5 gigahertz, which you should be using, you'll get up to 2400. And then if you have older WiFi standards, you actually only get up to 867 megabits per second. So these are like important numbers to know is that which WiFi standard you have and which gigahertz you're using. Honestly having 2

Exactly what I expected.

 So recommend you guys calling them, even if you, if, if they don't even support your broadband, they still help you out and they do a lot of couple of tests. And on top of that, there's a firmware upgrade when you purchase it. So remember to test that out first, depends on the model that's, um, is out at your, during your time. If there isn't, but I would just go there first prior to even setting everything up after you set up your password, username, password

 This includes iPads, iPhones, and Netflix, anything you have. Now network protection is in case you want to have the extra layer of protection. Now you could actually type in words to filter out so they won't be able to surf the internet. So just to let you know that in regarding logging into the admin, it's going to ask you automatically up from how do you want to set up the network and how to set up the password.
