 The question were like securing the app interface so my kids can’t change the ps4 black out period, any way to expand outdoors, and connecting another building on my property ( I solved it myself with amplifi products), etc. the most egregious example of their unwillingness was when a power chord went bad on a 13 month old router..

they said that they were out in the store but customer service has a supply because it is a very common problem (btw apparently they use a proprietary amperage rating so you can’t buy something to “get by”). Well custom service refused to send one because it was a month out of warranty. It is warmth like that which led the big three automakers in the 70’s to hit the skids. Again though they recommend unifi if my needs were that critical

Hello all. I am a beginner so apologies for the basic questions. My ISP is BT in the UK. I have a Smart Hub 2 modem/router.

I have a bunch of devices:

* 2 PCs connected directly via ethernet cables to the Smart Hub 2
* 1 PC connected via ethernet cable to a TPLink PowerLine adaptor, the other adaptor connected via ethernet cable to 
* Laptops connected over WiFi
* Several phones/tablets (home and for guests) connected via WiFi
* Smart TV, CCTV DVR. Currently not connected to internet but I would like to do this in a 'safe' way.

I would estimate that I would want to cater for roughly double the number of devices in total. I would also want to isolate the PCs and laptops into one 'group', phones/tablets into another, IoT including smart TVs CCTV into another, and guest connections into another. 

I understand that you can create 'VLANs' (not sure if that is the best option) but I don't know what kit is recommended. I would prefer high quality hardware manufacturers with a good record of updates, support and without any cloud subscriptions/tie-ins etc. 

Additionally I would like to be able to control what the 'IoT' devices actually connect to because I don't trust them... So I think I would need some kind of built-in firewall ability configurable at a 'per-virtual network' level?

My naive searching seems to show that 'Ubiquiti Unifi' was by the recommended forward a while ago, but they have since spoiled their reputation by forcing cloud adoption, hiding security incidents, etc.

What equipment and setup would you recommend?

Great for non-techies... crap for people that want control of their network.

 Whilst individually purchased mesh points can be connected to any router, even non-Amplifi routers, *mesh points purchased in a set, can only be connected to the router it came with*! These have been hardcoded to prevent connection to another router, even another identical Amplifi router!! There is nothing support can or is willing to do. They cannot send a firmware update to release the hardcoded lock, and they are unwilling to exchange these perfectly functional mesh points for ones that can be connected to the new router.  In other words, if the router fails, and it will, you can trash the mesh points too, even though they are technically functional. I am returning my new set as soon as I figure out what competing mesh system I will get instead

 Some other concerns that I have is that the router doesn't really have many options for configuring the firewall and it doesn't have any parental controls or VPN configuration. Now these really aren't a big deal but these are definitely some welcome features.  So I'm going to be comparing the Amplify HD to my existing TP-Link C5400 router that I've been using for the past two years. This is a great router with crazy speeds and good range so it'll be interesting to see how well it compares. Now my house is about 3400 square feet and I positioned the Amplify HD router in my kitchen which is basically right in the middle of my house and I put one mesh access point in the basement and the other one upstairs. Now before starting my tests on the Amplify HD system I did run some tests on my existing setup as a basis

 And tapping on the access points lets you see the signal strength and choose whether you want a five gigahertz or 2.4 gigahertz backbone connection and you can also temporarily pause or reboot the access points from the app as well. So now that you've seen how pretty it is and what settings you can control it's time to see how well it performs. Now I do have gigabit internet in my house so we'll use this to see just how much bandwidth we can utilize with this system

 Now my house is about 3400 square feet and I positioned the Amplify HD router in my kitchen which is basically right in the middle of my house and I put one mesh access point in the basement and the other one upstairs. Now before starting my tests on the Amplify HD system I did run some tests on my existing setup as a basis. So first I tested the internet speed standing about 10 feet away from my TP-Link router as a basis and running the internet speed test I was able to get about 300 megs down and 300 megs up which is great. Then I switched over to the Amplify HD and the speed test was reading about 300 megs down and 250 megs up which is also pretty good

The good: - super stable, I haven't had the devices crash in the month I've had it (unlike the tplink it replaced, which crashed daily) - nice, if simple, ui, if you don't mind doing all config via a mobile app. - great coverage: Amplifi + 2 mesh extenders more than well covers more than an acre sized lot + buildings - ipv6 that "just works"  The bad: - Config is buggy: I naively set my 2.4ghz channel to 40mhz bandwidth which killed the wifi (bad idea in a heavily congested area). fixing it it in the config software didn't actually reset the bandwidth to 20mhz, only a hard reset did

 I had to manually reboot the furthest mesh router for it to "fix" itself and go back to the "best performance" setup. - No throttling: There's no way to throttle devices with the amplifi software. This was the deal breaker for me. A single phone on my network was uploading HD video to the cloud, and it saturated my upload bandwidth

Good consumer grade product.  Lacks important prosumer features

 So under our guest Wi-Fi, the SSID just automatically creates YouTube-guest, but we could change this, and then we could add a security type to it. Under other, we could specify the country, and then we could do band steering, router steering, and then track on advanced. On the advanced, this is where we could do our channel selection and our channel width. So it's set by default at channel 11 on the 2

 And we could see the app has found the Amplify router and I'll click on the Amplify router HD. And that was pretty easy. We've connected to the Amplify router and it's asking us to put in a wireless name as well as a wireless password. So I'm gonna go ahead and do that

 And if we click on diagnose, we could see that the WAN link is up, the IP address gateway, and the DNS. And we could also see that both mesh points are up. On screen, you could see some speed tests that I took. The one on the left, 231 megabits per second down and 183 up is on this floor

 I'll call this YouTube. We have hardware NAT, UPnP, which I'm gonna turn off. We have a clone Mac address, VLAN ID, IPv6, and then we have bridge mode. Under wireless, we could see our main SSID, which is called YouTube, and then our password

I waited one day to see if I was missing updates and did another test the next day, same results. I moved the 2 antennas to see if I could make it work better with no improvement.  I contacted customer support because of the speed problems, I wasn't getting the right speed even with an ethernet cable

  Really cool unit, It was easy to install, and the setup was quick. The router downloaded updates and it was running without any issues. The only positive thing I noticed was the range increased, I was in front of my house and I was still connected to the wifi, but nothing else.  I included a picture of different results with one router or the other, plus another one with just the modem. At the end I went back to my old router and I'm sending Amplifi HD back

Customer support told me to change the hardware NAT option and the ethernet when up to 450 Mbps, the total speed I get from my provider, but the WIFI remained the same. Dissapointed, good coverage low speeds.

 The app takes care of the rest. It'll even show you your signal strength so you can get these as far away from the router as possible. Amplify says you can get up to 20,000 square feet of coverage for wi-fi with these things which is pretty big. What that does allow us to do is get a lot more coverage in our yard, driveway, basement, places that had typically gotten really weak signal strength even with some of the stronger routers that we've had in the house

 Initial setup took about, I don't know, five minutes max. Then you're able to set up all your guest networks, throttle your other connections, peek on the kids in your house if you want to. All of that is directly through the app and the really cool thing is if you hook the app up to your Facebook account, you could check all those stats and everything remotely. Which means if you're on the road and your family's at home, you can diagnose problems or you can even just shut your kid's iPhone off if you want to

 You're going to get the fastest possible speed we can as of right now and it's pretty future-proof as far as internet connections go. We have Gigabit here at the house from AT&T which is a guaranteed 600 and something down wired. Typically we see in the 8900 range. So these are the mesh points

 So with gigabit connections in the amplifier right now, your download speed severely degrades unless you're running in bridge mode. So as you can see from this video, as soon as we just switch it in and out of bridge mode through the app, the download speed significantly decreases. Amplify is aware of the problem. They're supposed to be coming out with a new firmware to fix that issue

 There is one major issue with the amplifier right now that's only going to cover a small percentage of buyers. Unfortunately, that's us. So with gigabit connections in the amplifier right now, your download speed severely degrades unless you're running in bridge mode. So as you can see from this video, as soon as we just switch it in and out of bridge mode through the app, the download speed significantly decreases
