 Well, you get a nice black case that the microphone comes in. You also get a carrying pouch. You also get this shock mount. See, most microphones don't come with a shock mount

 So yeah, let's go ahead and get into some tests first. I'm gonna do a couple distance tests. So right now I'm about six inches away from the microphone. Now we're about a foot away from the microphone

Audio-Technica AT4040 XLR Condenser Microphone Review (Rap/Pop Vocals)

Great for most acoustic audio recordings. Doesn't sound like a million dollars. But it sounds better than a lot of large diaphragm condenser mics that are sold for a similar price.

 Now let's talk about what comes in the box. First off, everything comes in this really nice storage box. You're obviously going to get the microphone. You get this really great looking shock mount

 And for this review, I have the mic connected directly to the 2i2 2nd gen with 48 volts on, and my gain is set at around 35 or 40%. I'm not going to do any compression or any EQ, but I will have to boost it in post to make it a decent level, so check the doobly-doo for that information. Now let's talk about what comes in the box. First off, everything comes in this really nice storage box

 So out of all the Audio-Technica condenser microphones that I've reviewed so far, this is hands down my favorite. In terms of pros, this thing has a very smooth sounding frequency response, particularly in the lower frequencies. The boost to the presence and air frequencies just open this microphone up and make it sound live. The built-in high-pass filter is really nice to have as it helps curb boominess or rumble

 It also has an all metal body as well as a metal grill, but there's not much in there to protect the microphone from plosives, so you may want to pick up a pop filter as well. On the back of the microphone, you will find two switches, the first one being a high pass filter which rolls off frequency starting at around 80 hertz at 12 decibels per octave, as well as a negative 10 decibel pad in case you're recording loud sound sources. When we get to the specs, we got a cardioid polar pattern, a frequency response of 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz, a max SPL of 145 or 155 decibels depending on the pad setting, an impedance of 100 ohms, and a sensitivity of negative 32 decibels. So currently, I'm at about three inches away from the microphone and I am in the flat mode and this is how the microphone sounds

Audio-Technica AT4040 Condenser Mic Review / Test

This product has been working since 2014 for me so the quality is great. The only thing you should consider is the pricing. It could be cheaper.

 Again, I am right on top of the microphone to exaggerate the proximity effect and currently the high pass filter is turned off. And now I have switched on that 80Hz high pass filter and you should hear quite a bit of the low end get cleaned up, but here is how it sounds. Now we're going to test the negative 10dB pad. To do this, I am going to hold a relatively consistent note and then engage the pad to see if it is an immediate attenuation or if it smooths out the attenuation over time

 Now here is how the microphone sounds in a well treated room. And here is how the 40-33A sounds in a completely untreated room. Now in order to see how effective the provided shock mount is, I'm going to tap on my desk to see how much of that noise it can reject and then I will tap on the boom arm. Now I am going to tap on the body of the microphone to see if there are any kind of resonant frequencies

 Now I am spinning around the 40-33 to 90 degrees so you can hear the off axis rejection and coloration, continuing around the microphone to 180 degrees, here is the rear of the mic, continuing to the second 90 degree angle, here we are, and then rotating and ending at the front of the microphone. And now we are going to test the plosives even though I can't eat pizza because I'm trying to be healthy. Please bring pizza pronto, please bring pizza pronto, please bring pizza pronto. Now I am right on top of the microphone to exaggerate the proximity effect and here is how it's sounding with all the mouth clicks and noises, gross

Audio Technica AT4033a Review / Test (vs AT2020, AT4040, NT1, U87 Ai)

It served its purpose. I recorded several songs using it. I feel happy with the quality of the sound, and I like it.

 When it comes to what you get in the box, you still get the pouch for on the go travel and the paperwork, but this time instead of a stand connector, you do get a shock mount which is a nice addition. And then in terms of frequency response, this microphone is a little bit more flat than that of the AT2020 with still a slight bump up on the high end. But overall, it is a good sounding vocal microphone. And as I'm speaking now, this is what the AT2035 sounds like

 I really like the look and design. I love the sound quality. I love what you get when you purchase this microphone and again, if you have the money, this is a great option to go for and it can also be very versatile coming with a roll-off and attenuation switch as well. And then last but not least, the AT4033, this microphone is one microphone that I've always wanted to test and always wanted to compare, especially to the AT4040 and like I mentioned, they both sound really, really good for vocal recording and I must still test them on acoustic guitar and things like that just to test the versatility that way but overall, the look, what you get when you purchase this microphone, the sound quality, it ticks all the boxes and at the end of the day, whichever Audio Technica microphone you go for, I promise you won't be making a mistake

 So to jump straight into things, the first microphone that I have here set up and ready to go is the Audio Technica AT2020. Costing around $100, I must say in my opinion, this is the best budget condenser microphone on the market today, coming in a nice black, clean, classy design and a build quality with a solid metal casing that's really exceptional for the price. When it comes to what you get in the box when you purchase this microphone, you don't only get the stand connector, but you also get a bag for on the go travel and some paperwork to finish it off. And then last but not least in terms of frequency response, for this budget price, I must say it is quite flat, but because you are looking at under $100, the Audio Technica AT2020 does have a slight tinny noise to it, which you won't see in more expensive microphones

Which Audio-Technica Microphone Should You Buy? // Audio-Technica AT2020, At2035, AT4040 & AT4033

 Earlier albums focused on songs by Irving Berlin, Ellington, Burton Lane, Jimmy McHugh, James Van Heusen, Harold Arlen, and so on.  For years, I used a pair of Audio-Technica AT2035 Cardioid Condenser Microphones, feeding an Avid box and Pro Tools. The AT2035s were pretty good, though prone to distortion in loud passages. I must confess that I did not take very good care of them, and over time the diaphragms were too dusty to clean without damaging them, which I believe affected the sound

  In addition, the AT4040 comes with an excellent shock mount and a cover that fits even when the mic is in the shock mount. Finally, I record and edit with headphones on, which can reveal noise; I find the AT4040 to be very strong but quiet.  My only regret is that I didn't upgrade to the AT4040s earlier. Cheers!

 The AT2035s were pretty good, though prone to distortion in loud passages. Before starting my current album, I knew it was time to upgrade mics. As you know, condenser mics can be really expensive, and figuring out which ones are worth it is a subjective affair

  In closing, I'd say that the AT4040s are not overwhelmed in any frequency range that a complex and bright grand piano like mine can produce. One positive outcome, is that I can record with a higher gain, which amounts to a stronger recording - free of distortion despite being louder - which sounds better on a wide range of playback devices, from acoustic stereos to ear buds on a smartphone.  In addition, the AT4040 comes with an excellent shock mount and a cover that fits even when the mic is in the shock mount. Finally, I record and edit with headphones on, which can reveal noise; I find the AT4040 to be very strong but quiet

 It's not going to take it away completely, but you're going to probably notice a significant difference with those low ends. So now we're going to do a little test again, talking low, talking middle, talking high. So one more thing I'm going to go into with these switches, I'm going to engage both of them. So right now we have a low cut and a negative 10 dB pad, man, I struggle with that one

 But this one here is really getting closer to that studio level microphone. Studios use the AT4040 all over the place. And it's definitely that price point and that quality that you start noticing higher quality in your audio. So in this video, we will be going over the AT4040 and figuring out if it's the right upgrade for you from where you are to where you're going

 And the reason why I'm saying it's not a high performance microphone is because it's not a Neumann, it's not a high level AKG, and it's really just a nice workhorse. That's what Audio Technica in my mind is, it's a nice workhorse brand. And it's like you could just throw it up anywhere in a studio, on a drum set, on an overhead, and it will work. The next thing I'm going to get into is I'm going to recap that video on the AT2020

 And what you're going to notice is those low ends are going to be a little less pronounced than they're not. You're going to see here more of the mids and the highs. It's not going to take it away completely, but you're going to probably notice a significant difference with those low ends. So now we're going to do a little test again, talking low, talking middle, talking high

Your first Mic Upgrade? (Audio-Technica AT4040 review and Test)

 It is one of the few economically priced consumer microphones that can be found in professional studios. One thing that really sets this microphone different is the minimal proximity affect. I can get as close to it as I want and my voice does not get muffled like other mics I have used. All microphones have some proximity affect

 The attenuation switch comes in handy when recording loud sounds and it also has a bass roll off if you need it. Vocals are very clear and I don’t hear any coloring with this microphone. I hear details in my vocals I didn’t hear in my other microphones. Yes, the price is a little high for the beginner but take it from me, it is worth it

 I tried the cheap mic route and I was disappointed as I had to ‘fix it in the mix’ after the fact. I searched on YouTube and found a shootout between this Microphone and others. Look it up, I think you will be as impressed as I was.  This microphone sound is a close second to a microphone 10x the cost

 It has good rejection of sounds outside of the pickup pattern which is important to dry vocals in smaller rooms. However, it is very sensitive and picks up everything within the pattern. The attenuation switch comes in handy when recording loud sounds and it also has a bass roll off if you need it. Vocals are very clear and I don’t hear any coloring with this microphone
