Baratza Vario Plus Coffee Grinder Review

I have been using the Vario for over a year, here are my observations:  (+) There is negligible "holdup" in the burr chamber, if I put 18 g of beans in the hopper I get 18 g of ground coffee in the basket. Some grinders keep a significant quantity in the grinding chamber which mixes into successive grinds and, of course, becomes stale. (+/-) The grinder stops dead precisely at the preset grind time (to 0.1 s) allowing very reproducible dosing WITH DRY BEANS in the hopper

Over all this is a pretty good grinder for espresso, very good for other extraction methods.

 With oily beans, particularly, I must always take off the lid and push one or two beans with my finger. Another little thing is that the grounds hopper is highly prone to static cling. I have to smack it hard, repeatedly as I empty it into the press pot. But those are minuscule complaints compared to the glory of the coffee we can make with it

 It's not much quieter than our old one, and it doesn't grind quite as coarsely as I thought I wanted for the press pot. But you can't argue with flavor.  We're delighted with it, and I almost gave it five stars, but there is room for minor improvement in a couple areas. The main one is that the beans don't always completely clear the hopper without help

The only reason it doesn't get a 5-star from me is that static electricity sticks the ground beans tenaciously to the inside of the collection bin. I use a soft paintbrush to sweep out the inside of the bin, then vacuum the floor & wipe the counter

We actually cut a coffee bean bag to fit into the collection bin - yep, the ground coffee sticks to that as well. Fixing that problem would make me very happy; the ground coffee makes an excellent brew
