Vacuum Wars

 It'S rare for vacuums of any type to be able to pick up large debris, but the large self-adjusting gate on the front is really well designed on the forward push. It opens up really wide to accommodate extra large debris and then it closes to make the seal on the backward pull. You can see in the crevice pick up test that it doesn't pick up much on its forward push, but when pulling it back, it picked up. All the debris in both the eighth inch and quarter inch crevices, which is really good

 It stands upright easily for storage, which again is a big problem with traditional cordless vacuums, where you're always looking for a good place to set it down while cleaning a house. Another huge Pro for the Bissell air ram is its carpet deep cleaning ability, cordless vacuums on average, don't deep, clean carpets! Well, in fact, I've only tested one other cordless vacuum, the very expensive dyson v10 that got a 100 % on our deep clean test. Where we rub 100 grams of sand into a medium pile carpet and weigh the dustbins before and after, but the Bissell air ram also scored a perfect 100 in this test. This is most likely due to two things: it's brushroll being particularly powerful and its well-designed gate on the front that creates a good seal on the back pull of the vacuum, which brings us to the next Pro its pickup ability on carpet

 By having the motor and battery on the cleaner head, it means that there's very little weight on the handle, which means it's a lot less tiring on your arm than traditional, cordless vacuums. Bissell says it's only one pound on your arm during vacuuming. This is compared to an average of three to five pounds with most cordless vacuums. It really does make a difference, especially if you're trying to vacuum large areas, also as a result of its shape

 It picked up all the debris from fine debris to pet hair to large debris with no issues, but the real surprise was with its hard floor performance. It did really well with all types of debris like sand, which is difficult for some vacuums and it had sufficient airflow for pet hair and other debris, but the large debris performance was especially notable.  After vacuuming 2 or 3 times you have to remove the filter and clean it. It’s not hard, but it’s another step that’s kind of a pain, I want the dirt cup to catch the dirt, not the filter. I actually use my large regular vacuum to clean the filter every 2 or 3 days. It says to wash it, but it’s much quicker and easier to vacuum the vacuum filter, plus you don’t have to wait for the filter to dry

 The LED lights work fantastic. Ever had a vacuum cleaner that had little lights that really didnt do anything? No worries here as these lights are bright and throw an even light so they really do help, especially going into closets, etc where you don’t have to go around turning on lights just to vacuum. Emptying the dirt bin is also extremely easy and convenient and you have a 99% chance of never touching any dirt. As far as maneuvering it also works very smooth and easy

 The battery run time is AMAZING, it really does run for 40 minutes on a single charge, and having the battery indicator is another plus since it takes away any guessing. So close

 You've got to suck all the dust off the big long foam (not HEPA) filter to keep it sucking at maximum suck-tential. This gets real tedious, REAL quick. Want to wash it? Hope you can go a few days without vacuuming, as the felt lining takes at least a solid day to dry completely. Also, quite a bit of crap ends up on the filter

 Why not make the whole thing have bristle overlap so there aren't "dead zones" in the cleaning path?  Oh, that's why. Because you'll see the red ring of death if you use it on fairly high pile or plush carpet. Standard carpet it does just fine, but if you approach the fancy stuff, it just dies in place. Wait a few seconds and it's ready for another go, but there's some stuff the thing just can't do

 After a good thorough cleaning, this vacuum has been assigned specifically for vacuuming my bed, and it has to be dragged along the top of the bad quickly, backwards, in order to keep it from sucking in the blanket and seizing the roller. Seems I was a bit too "quick" with it and the handle's VERY cheesy little snapper plastic thingies couldn't take any more wear. I'd love to see them make a model with the exact same engineering, but with respectable components, even if for more money.

 It's a pretty vacuum, but it's a bit wimpy.  So there you have it. An absolutely usable cleaning machine that has some quirks. I got mine with a $30 off coupon on Amazon, and picked up another open-item on ebay for a lot less

Solid performer, not so solidly built

 For a more even comparison, we also have a Hoover BH50140 cordless. The BH50140 is far easier to maneuver, and feel is still slightly of higher quality than the Bissell, but the brush is still not as aggressive as the Bissell. The battery on the BH50140 also fits it's companion hand vac, which is sold separately. Again, an intuitive feature

 Moreover, the throat on the Linx is narrow, and even small objects would routinely clog the unit. However, they easily fit under the edges of coffee tables and sofas, and the overall feel of the Linx is of higher quality. Meanwhile the Bissell won't fit under anything, the head is far too bulky.  In regards to power, the Bissell seems to get the carpets cleaner, and the beater brush is far more aggressive than the Hoover

 The batteries on those have been horrendous, almost losing their ability to charge at all within a few months. In two years, out of eight batteries, only two can take a 2bar out of three charge. Moreover, the throat on the Linx is narrow, and even small objects would routinely clog the unit. However, they easily fit under the edges of coffee tables and sofas, and the overall feel of the Linx is of higher quality

 You can also buy a spare battery for the Bissell, though it doesn't come with an extra. One major downfall is that the battery on the Bissell hand vac is not the same shape, and will not fit the stick vac (more on the hand vac in a separate hand vac review). Bissell truly needs to reconsider this oversight; as it would be fantastic to simply pull the battery from one unit in order to continue a job with the other.  The Bissell feels slightly flimsy, rather low quality overall compared to the Hoover, even at twice or three times the price

Interesting design, nice and aggressive agitator brush, but quirky feel and maneuverability, and doesn't fit under a sofa....

 I put it together by myself with no tools in about 5 minutes, it took me longer to get it out of the boxes. I don't know how I got along without the Air Ram and know my house is cleaner. Emptying the dirt bin is so easy. Everything about the Air Ram is easy and fantastic, I love it

 Enter the Bissell 1984 Air Ram, it is fantastic and I am thrilled beyond words. This cordless vacuum is so powerful it actually pulls itself across my hard floors and sucks the dog hair to it. Also, the book says it might pull throw rugs up; well, my "throw rugs" are large heavy hand cut wool rugs and I have to be careful on the edges or it sucks them up, and they do not have fringe, I'm talking about my rugs! So you can imagine how well it gets all the dirt and dog hair out of my rugs. Amazing

 The washable filter is foam with a felt lining. I use my Air Ram every day and need to wash the filter at least once a week. PROBLEM - it takes 2 - 3 days for the filter to dry depending on how long you want to spend with paper towels absorbing the water and your hair dryer on high and hot. It would be a very simple solution IF Bissell had filters so you could get an extra one, but they don't

 I have hardwood floors with hand cut wool rugs. Getting out my Shark vacuum or broom or dust mop out every time I needed to get dog hair or debris up was a pain. Enter the Bissell 1984 Air Ram, it is fantastic and I am thrilled beyond words. This cordless vacuum is so powerful it actually pulls itself across my hard floors and sucks the dog hair to it

In other vacs, the canister and motor is up by the grip, and the dirt/debris has to travel a long way through the vac body - which often gets clogged up and dirty. This design means there's almost no travel between floor and collection canister - nice!  I only have two complaints:  1

 Dust blows all around, and sometimes it's hard to shake all the hair out. The green sponge filter also gets really full of dust and I can never get it all out. You have to bang it against something, and then that thing gets full of dust. It's a good value though, because even though it costs more than other vacuums, you don't have to keep buying those expensive replacement bags

 I had to put it back together with tape. Not good, Bissell!  In other respects the vac is well designed. The vac is easy to clean: the plastic canister pops out and you can empty it without getting the dust all over the place. The best part of the design is a plunger that neatly gets all the dirt out without having to touch anything with your hands

 It has powerful suction (on par with my corded vacuums), lightweight, and has a flexible handle that allows me to easily vacuum under the beds and couches. However, this weekend the clips holding the handle broke off. I had to put it back together with tape. Not good, Bissell!  In other respects the vac is well designed

Works well, but handle BROKE OFF after a couple of months.

 The battery lasts about 40 minutes which will clean my 1620 sq ft house twice before recharging. Allegedly, you can get replacement battery packs but after 9 months using this thing, the battery still holds it's charge as well as it did when I first bought it. Definitely worth the money.

A very good cordless vacuum with the following caveat...

 Just contacted customer service so we'll see what happens. I'll give it 5 stars is repair is satisfactory.
