Based on these experiences, I would never opt to take this on a backpacking or other overnight outdoor adventure. I will definitely try it for running (it is called the sprinter, after all) as our nights fall earlier and for skiing when the snow falls. I expect it to perform well enough for those activities--which is why I titled this review "a one trick pony."

 I have not tried the headlamp yet with those activities; I make the judgement based on my less than satisfactory experience using it in other activities.

 You have a few options in the back so traffic and see you got the strobe, get the flashing and then you just got the straight light. so if you do want to preserve battery life, you have the option of keeping it off as you can tell the light is still on in the front, off in the back. So one tap activate the light. You're gonna hold it for city running just to be respectful of other pedestrians

Review: Black Diamond Sprinter Rechargeable Headlamp

First, wouldn't it be nice to own just one headlamp that you could wear in every situation, such as camping, hiking, running, etc? It would, but this isn't the headlamp for that. This headlamp does not have a night vision mode, so it you would have to buy another headlamp to use for camping or other activities in the dark where you would want to maintain night vision. As someone who likes to camp, in groups and solo, this headlamp wouldn't meet my needs. I wouldn't want to buy separate headlamps for each scenario, I just want to own one headlamp that can meet all my needs, and this ain't it

Hard to Recommend

Good for runs; rechargeable battery failed early

Positives: with most of the weight in the back and the light itself being very light, this thing stays put! Which is great for night runs. I love the adjustability of the brightness and I had no issue with the battery life. The adjustability of the straps is great, it is pretty easy to get a nice snug fit.

The light is plenty bright for running and hiking and the battery life is more than sufficient for this. It fits well and doesn't sag or shift while being worn. It also stays balanced on your head well. It has a lot of features that are nice, especially for running (like the red strobe light in the rear of the headlamp) and adjust easily between settings

This is a great headlamp for running and hiking. I would not use this headlamp for long backpacking trips, but it wasn't designed to be used for that.

 I loved the red lamp on the back for safety. Great feature.  I wish they could find a way to make the casing for batteries smaller and this still feels bulky.

 I have worn it on multiple evening runs now and the illumination is great and I love the ability to use batteries or recharge. The battery life is more than sufficient for my distance but I'm not an ultra runner so I'm not sure on the longevity yet. I loved the red lamp on the back for safety. Great feature
