I'm looking through all the posts here to figure out which e-reader would suit me best, and many comments are in the scope of "you have to find which suits you best".   
What would be the criteria for this?  
I assume: 

* battery life length — where you would be using it and for how long between charges?
* Size and weight — what size and weight will feel comfortable to hold?
* Country — It looks like that in Australia I cannot download books from my local library onto a Kindle?

I would love some help in what questions I need to ask myself to find a device which will fit my needs.

Are there any e-book readers (not smartphones) that have android app support? Here in Estonia there is a paid e-book subscription service that uses an android app. I like reading books from a e-book reader (the screen is better for my eyes) but reading e-books from a smartphone just isn't for me.

Any reason you dont choose the iPad? E-ink devices are more advanced these days but I still find myself use mine for PDFs and graphic novels because it is faster and well, colorful. I use Onyx Boox Nova 2 for books that don’t have many pictures though.

Depends on your price range. I'm thinking at least a 10" device for your needs, so that's gonna be something like the Boox Note Air or Note 3, but you're looking at around $500 for something like that.

If that's too high on the budget, I'd probably just pick up a Kindle Fire 10 FHD tablet.

I have a remarkable and an iPad, and I'd definitely choose the remarkable for my PDFs. There may be better and easier to obtain devices, because right now RM is a bit hard to get, but I like my RM1 for PDFs.

I have been getting into tabletop gaming so I have tons and tons of .pdf books from that, and also have fanfics, books, and comics in .pdf form as well.

I know there are tablets dedicated to reading like the Kindle Fire and all that. But I'm not sure that's exactly what I want. What I would like is something like this:

\- Something like an iPad with a bigger-sized screen.  
\- Something light enough to carry around frequently.  
\- Has enough storage space to hold tons of stuff, and/or ability to access an external hard drive.  
\- A storage system that is easy to navigate through and easy to sort which types of books I'm looking at. (I'm thinking a folder system just like a desktop PC.)  
\- Bonus points if it has the capability to write hand-written notes / highlight on the .pdf.  
\- Great price point is an extra bonus as well.

I'm not very up-to-date on the latest tech. Do you guys have any idea what would work best for what I'm looking for? What do you guys use? Thank you for the help in advance!

What is the best way to carry your library with you?

some qualities to consider:

* warm frontlight - most ereaders have adjustable frontlights that let you read in the dark. Some models have a warm lighting option that turns the screen slightly yellow / sepia, which I find a lot more comfortable than pure white. iirc most Kobo devices have this except the cheapest one, but of the Kindles only the Oasis does.
* supported formats - this is relevant if you plan on adding your own book files alongside ones you buy. Kindles only support kindle books, mobi, pdf etc (though conversion is pretty easy), Kobos can read pretty much anything including the very common epub format and manga files.
* library support - do you borrow ebooks from the library? Both kindles and kobos support Overdrive natively, though kindles only in the US. 
* screen size - 6" is most common for ereaders but some models have larger screens, which may be easier on the eyes
* waterproofing - do you plan on reading in the bath, or near a pool / beach?
* page turn buttons - some models have physical page turn buttons you can press, which you may find more satisfying than tapping/swiping
* ergonomic design - a few models (kindle oasis, kobo libra and forma) have an asymmetrical design that feels more comfortable to hold. These all have page turn buttons. 
* audiobooks - all current Kindles support listening to Audible audiobooks (with bluetooth headphones/speakers), some Kobos as well (but audiobooks from the kobo store, or those you sideload)
* storage capacity -  this is only relevant if you plan on audiobooks or manga, you'll need more storage for those
* integrations - kindles can sync your progress to Goodreads, Kobos have Pocket support for online articles.

I mentioned Kindle and Kobo because those are the cheapest and most convenient for the average reader. They have integrated stores to buy books from, are optimised for reading, and have reliable customer support.

I personally have a Likebook Muses, a Chinese device that runs Android. It can download Android apps like a good browser, onedrive, feedly, moon+ reader, instapaper, the library reader app etc. It's more expensive than usual ereaders but the extra functionality is worth it to be, and I don't mind de-DRMing my kindle books or fiddling with optimisation settings. But if you just plan to read books Android is overkill imo.

Are there any e-readers that allow the hoopla app to be installed? I tried kobo and kindle’s web browsers to log into Hoopla and it failed miserably. I don’t want to pay for kobo or kindle’s e-book subscriptions because the book selection is not great. I’d like to be able to read e-books by using library books on a device that is eye friendly. Any suggestions would be helpful. Would perhaps getting an iPad and using the hoopla app on that while wearing blue light glasses work too?

Hoopla on e-readers?

I've  been using my P6 for few days and here's a brief review. I had ordered  it before the global release, so its the Chinese version of device.  Though Boyue assured me that there are no differences between Chinese  and global one, expect some Chinese text at back panel.

**Price:** $129.99

**Bought from:** Likebook's Aliexpress store.

**Specs:** 6" E-ink with Android 8.1. 1 GB RAM. Rockchip RK3326 processor. 1500mAh battery.

**My use case:**

I  have a Kindle basic which works great, but I needed an e-reader to read  RSS feeds, blogs, long texts and wikis without looking at LCD screens.

**Hardware:**

Build  quality is robust. Its way lighter than my Kindle (even with the case)  and feels good in hands. While most people prefer USB-C, I have no  issues with micro-usb.

The screen,  compared to Kindle, is pale. So, in low light conditions, one can't  read  without turning on the frontlight. Frontlight is pleasant and  offers granular adjustment. It also has a SD-card slot, haven't used it  yet.

**Software:**

Overall  system software is very stable and bare bones. With 1 GB RAM and a  weaker processor, I had totally expected unexpected system crashes, app  shutdowns before buying the device, but they never came. Process  management is very good and response speed is average. Guess! Boyue  finally did their homework.  I used six apps at a time, and it still had  plenty of RAM remaining, and the device didn't slow down a bit. Though, it has minor hiccups here and there, but nothing that stands out.

Software takes a day to get used to, but after that its breeze to use.

**• Stock apps:**   The stock reader, Zreader is a hit or miss. I put in one mobi, one  epub and three cbr files to check. The epub one wasn't rendered  correctly, showing boxes in place of quotes. Surprisingly, the mobi file  for the same book worked just fine. Zreader offers loads of typesetting  changes, and after half an hour of fiddling/loading fonts, I managed to  make it look same as my kindle.

And  for cbr files, only one of them worked. Other two, showed some error in  Chinese. But boy! the cbr file that worked was absolute joy to read,  especially with the manual crop function. Pictures were very crisp.  Zreader definitely needs improvement.

It also has a file manager, wifi transfer and gallery.

**• Third party Apps:** Most third-party apps work nicely with A2 mode and increased contrast.

*Brave* browser works without any hiccups.*Brave*  offers a reader mode, which makes reading articles quite easy. P6 came  with Google Play enabled, I disabled it to save battery and installed *Aurora Store* and *F-droid* instead. Both work without any issues. It took quite fiddling around with themes, but I got *Boost for Reddit* to work. *Inoreader* works properly for reading feeds. Thought *FeedMe* crashed when I tried to use it. *Kiwix* works fine for offline Wikipedia. *Simple Draw Pro* from *F-droid* surprisingly works good for very basic scribbling, using capacitive stylus or fingers. *Comic Screen* works for reading cbr files.

**Battery:**

If  used just as an e-reader, P6 clocks 20+ hours. However, if you turn the  wifi on, and browse internet the battery goes from 80% to 10% in about 5  hours. I had certainly expected better battery. So, expect the battery  life to behave like a normal phone once wifi is on. I did connected it  with speakers via bluetooth for a while, there wasn't any sudden drop in  battery.

**P6 Case:**

P6  comes with an adhesive case, which I am not a fan of. It sure is  lightweight, sleek and goes with device very well, but doesn't offer any  'real' protection from falls. I wish, they'd release a hard-case cover  for the device.

**TL;DR :**  If you're looking for an small, handy e-reader that you can install  apps on and has a decent amount of memory and a screen that allows you  to read text without any strain, look no further. For $130 P6 is is well  worth your money. But if you're looking for a e-reader which works without any hiccups and has a finesse in software, this shouldn't be your choice.

<p><strong>Specs:</strong> 6&quot; E-ink with Android 8.1. 1 GB RAM. Rockchip RK3326 processor. 1500mAh battery.</p>

<p><strong>My use case:</strong></p>

<p>I  have a Kindle basic which works great, but I needed an e-reader to read  RSS feeds, blogs, long texts and wikis without looking at LCD screens.</p>

<p><strong>Hardware:</strong></p>

<p>Build  quality is robust. Its way lighter than my Kindle (even with the case)  and feels good in hands. While most people prefer USB-C, I have no  issues with micro-usb.</p>

<p>The screen,  compared to Kindle, is pale. So, in low light conditions, one can&#39;t  read  without turning on the frontlight. Frontlight is pleasant and  offers granular adjustment. It also has a SD-card slot, haven&#39;t used it  yet.</p>

<p><strong>Software:</strong></p>

<p>Overall  system software is very stable and bare bones. With 1 GB RAM and a  weaker processor, I had totally expected - unexpected system crashes, app  shutdowns before buying the device, but they never came. Process  management is very good and response speed is average. Guess! Boyue  finally did their homework.  I used six apps at a time, and it still had  plenty of RAM remaining, and the device didn&#39;t slow down a bit. Though, it has minor hiccups here and there, but nothing that stands out.</p>

<p>Software takes a day to get used to, but after that its breeze to use.</p>

<p><strong>• Stock apps:</strong>   The stock reader, Zreader is a hit or miss. I put in one mobi, one  epub and three cbr files to check. The epub one wasn&#39;t rendered  correctly, showing boxes in place of quotes. Surprisingly, the mobi file  for the same book worked just fine. Zreader offers loads of typesetting  changes, and after half an hour of fiddling/loading fonts, I managed to  make it look same as my kindle.</p>

<p>And  for cbr files, only one of them worked. Other two, showed some error in  Chinese. But boy! the cbr file that worked was absolute joy to read,  especially with the manual crop function. Pictures were very crisp.  Zreader definitely needs improvement.</p>

<p>It also has a file manager, wifi transfer and gallery.</p>

<p><strong>• Third party Apps:</strong> Most third-party apps work nicely with A2 mode and increased contrast.</p>

<p><em>Brave</em> browser works without any hiccups.<em>Brave</em>  offers a reader mode, which makes reading articles quite easy. P6 came  with Google Play enabled, I disabled it to save battery and installed <em>Aurora Store</em> and <em>F-droid</em> instead. Both work without any issues. It took quite fiddling around with themes, but I got <em>Boost for Reddit</em> to work. <em>Inoreader</em> works properly for reading feeds. Thought <em>FeedMe</em> crashed when I tried to use it. <em>Kiwix</em> works fine for offline Wikipedia. <em>Simple Draw Pro</em> from <em>F-droid</em> surprisingly works good for very basic scribbling, using capacitive stylus or fingers. <em>Comic Screen</em> works for reading cbr files.</p>

<p><strong>Battery:</strong></p>

<p>Battery is very average. If  used just as an e-reader, P6 clocks 20+ hours. However, if you turn the  wifi on, and browse internet the battery goes from 80% to 10% in about 5  hours. I had certainly expected better battery. So, expect the battery  life to behave like a normal phone once wifi is on. I did connect it  with speakers via bluetooth for a while, there wasn&#39;t any sudden drop in  battery.</p>

<p><strong>P6 Case:</strong></p>

<p>P6  comes with an adhesive case, which I am not a fan of. It sure is  lightweight, sleek and goes with device very well, but doesn&#39;t offer any  &#39;real&#39; protection from falls. I wish, they&#39;d release a hard-case cover  for the device.</p>

<p><strong>TL;DR :</strong>  If you&#39;re looking for a small, handy e-reader that you can install  apps on and has a decent amount of memory and a screen that allows you  to read text without any strain, look no further. For $130 P6 is is well  worth your money. But if you&#39;re looking for a e-reader which works without any hiccups and has a finesse in software, this shouldn&#39;t be your choice.</p>

A brief-ish review of Boyue Likebook P6

I have a Boox Note Air 2 and love it. Can't go wrong with the 1 either honestly. You can make an account if you want but I didn't bother.

All the newer Kobos (Elipsa, Sage, and Libra 2, possibly others) use USB-C.

You don't need the Internet or an account with Kobos. You can just plug it in to a computer, and it appears as a regular USB hard drive. Drag your epubs over and you're good to go.

If you’re US based, new Nook coming out next month will support epub and should have USB-C. Not sure about your last requirement.

Onyx Boox devices don't require signing up for anything. You can pretty much plug it into your PC and start dragging over ePubs (and APKs!).

I'd highly recommend just using Dropbox, Syncthing or the transfer tool of your choice instead of futzing with cables though :)

Basically the title. I've been looking for an ereader that uses USB-C to charge so that I only need to take one cable with me when I travel. 

I've seen that certain Kindle models now have USB-C but unless something has changed, they don't support the standard and open **epub** file format. From what I can tell, Kobo does and always has supported this format.

And finally, I'm looking for an ereader that does not require me to connect to the internet and set up an account. I have my own book digital book collection thanks to the likes of organizations like Project Gutenberg. I've watched some videos of a Kobo ereader being set up and it looks like there's an option to select "Don't Have Wifi", but I'm not sure if it just prompts you to connect to a computer with internet access. Note that this is important to me, but not necessarily mandatory like the USB-C and epub requirement.

Any recommendations?

I'm considering buying a Boyue Meebook P78 e-reader because I don't want a Kindle again (very closed ecosystem) and it seems to be one of the few e-paper e-readers that come with an SD card slot. It runs Android 11 and has the google app store available which is also a plus.

I'm on the verge of buying a second hand Boyue Likebook P10, but I saw a video on youtube showing that this ereader had only one font with latin characters (Arial). Does that mean that every PDF I read would be in the Arial font ?

I find this quite concerning.

What about PDFs made with Latex, that contain mathematical symbols? Will I be able to read those?
