It took me a few months of having this printer to realize that for it to really be useful you have to do two things.  First, it MUST be connected via Ethernet and not WiFi if you want to use it as a network printer. It is advertised as a wireless printer, but as far as I can tell this feature is absolutely useless because any wireless print won't wake the printer up from the sleep mode it enters after some comically short idle timer. Sure, you can go wake the printer up manually by pushing a button (although this was a crapshoot in my experience from half my devices) but this defeats the point of having a network printer that you can put in a centralized location

Second, there's a little paper catch that you MUST flip up if you don't want the printer to just spit your pages over the floor

 That's despite the WiFi shortcomings. I hope that Canon figures out WiFi in the future, but I suspect I won't need another laser printer to replace this one for at least a decade.

 WiFi is the printer's downfall. I initially set the printer to use its built-in WiFi connection. This is not that hard to do if you are versed in doing such things, and everything worked well for a few days. Then every few days, I'd wake up, go in to feed my cat, and find that the printer had taken itself offline

 You find out this has happened when the mellow green pilot light on the printer gets inflamed and turns bright orange/yellow. A bit of online research indicated that many other people have encountered this particular design flaw. The solution to this problem is to run an Ethernet cable from your router or gateway to the printer and use the printer's hardwired Ethernet port. I bought a cheap, 50-foot Ethernet cable (about $10), connected the printer to my router with it, and it's been happy ever since

 (The printer doesn't communicate at Gigabit speeds, so a cheaper, thinner Ethernet cable will work just fine.) I bought my used printer for $80 from Amazon, so I feel my money was well spent to get a double-sided printer with a sheet-fed scanner. That's despite the WiFi shortcomings. I hope that Canon figures out WiFi in the future, but I suspect I won't need another laser printer to replace this one for at least a decade

Great print, bad Wifi

 I finally got the APPLY to work, but even with leaving the printer on for 24hrs, the installation didn't stick wirelessly. Not being able to print out the manual was frustrating. The needed odd bits needed to install were scattered throughout the documentation. Not graceful

 Unfortunately, it appears you need to set up the software using a laptop or desktop. )  (This is not touch screen. It's Alphabet Hunt & Peck. If I get this setup done, I'll write a modified review

Keeps resetting IP address and won’t print (updated 08/27/2022 very competent printer)

 Even after I hit the sleep mode to use, it will not connect to canon through my phone. In order to locate the printer name on my phone to print, I have to completely power off the printer, wait a few seconds and then turn it back on. Only then will it allow me to print again through internet connection. It’s pretty frustrating having to do that

Perhaps running the software install off a disc would have resulted in an automatic install of both printer and scanner software? Shame on Canon for that glitch. Hence 4 stars instead of 5. I was also very fortunate to accidentally hit it at the lowest price
