When you're using a 45, you're going to look at a different level. But for a 33, that's where you look, right there

The Crosley C100 Unboxing & Review!

Just bought a Sony PS-LX350H for $1 from my local record store &amp; I am looking for recommendations for the missing pieces/parts!

I got this as a secondary table to my trusty Technics SL-3100. It seemed like a good price for a new turntable with similar customizable speed, tonearm balancing, etc.  Out of the box, the speed was too fast at the "0" position on the slider. I had to slow it to -2 but have since played with the speed pot on the underside to dial it in

  To conclude, I feel like with a little work, an experienced user can get ok results out of the C100. It's easy to dial in the correct speed and the tonearm is at least mostly balanceable, minus anti-skating. The sound quality of the included cartridge and preamp is actually quite good, in my opinion, making this a possible candidate for an affordable secondary table.  I wouldn't recommend this table to a beginner as it needs far too much twiddling with out of the box

Has Quirks, Needs Work but NOT TERRIBLE

 The cueing lever is an indispensable part of the turntable, and this one works really well. Having the S-shaped tone arm is cool, and I understand it allows the head shell assembly to be plugged into it directly on the end. However, I actually think that a straight tone arm is just fine. In a lot of the DJ turntables that are styled similar to this, like the C200 by Crosley, you will notice that it uses the S bend in the tone arm

I have taken the opportunity to upgrade the cartridge to the Ortofon OM5E, which is an elliptical stylus. Do I notice a huge difference between the elliptical OM5E and the standard Audio-Technica cartridge that it's shipped with? No, not really

 If you see this little thing right here, that is where some of the turntables that come out of the HandPin factory would put a cueing light. Like we reviewed on the DJ-100, also made by HandPin, the cueing light would go here and just allow you to cue up the record in the dark. The back panel is actually very simple and just consists of left and right RCA jacks. I like the fact that it just has jacks and not a built-in cable that allows you to upgrade the cables

C-100 1 Year Later!

New to vinyl: I was gifted this Crosley record player. I know of Crosley’s reputation. If I just replace the cartridge/needle can it be a decent player? Or am I better off just getting a different budget record player entirely? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I'm a beginner vinyl lover and after going through all the reviews, I decided to buy the Crosley K100 Belt-Drive Turntable Stereo System with Bluetooth Speakers, Silver. It arrived promptly and I was excited to use it straight from the box. After setting up the tonearm, power it up, nothing. As I live outside the USA (that is another story!) I was dreading of returning it, to cost me another fortune

I just upgraded from an AT LP60 to a Fluance RT82. Unfortunately the RT82 is now out of stock until March, but I’m just blown away going from the Audio Technica to the Fluance. I did a ton of research before settling on the RT82. For $299 I think it’s just about the best I could do. If you go cheaper like the AT LP60x you’ll get a taste for vinyl and end up upgrading pretty quickly. The cool thing about the RT82 is that you can upgrade the platter and cartridge over time and end up with a $500 turntable, if you feel the need. The RT82 does need an external phono pre amp, but you can get a decent one for not too much. 

The next step up from the Audio Technica LP60x is the LP120x and that turntable would allow you to upgrade the cartridge, but for only $50 more you can get the RT82. 

I did look at some used turntables when upgrading but decided to go new due to the uncertainty of buying used.

Edit to add: the Fluance RT82 is $299 on the Fluance site. More expensive on Amazon if/when in stock. 

My current setup is the RT82, a Fossi Audio phono tube pre amp that I installed GE matched tubes in, and Edifier R1280T bookshelf speakers. This entire setup is under $500 total and sounds great. 

Fair warning though, audio/vinyl is very addictive, and it’s super easy to spend money. I’m currently waiting for UPS to deliver a pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers, and an Edifier subwoofer, that I spent all my Christmas money on. I’m thinking that this will be the final iteration of my “budget” audiophile set up for a while.

OK, take a deep breath. You are worried about making a mistake, but you have to look at this as a hobby and there are no mistakes in a hobby just learning opportunities. You are not going to know what you really like until you hear it and we don't have stereo stores any more so its hard to go listen to what is available. 

The good news is there is more descent stuff out there than bad. So, your chances of not finding something you like is small. Every stereo company has been making multiple levels of stereos every year for decades so there is a lot of good used stuff out there. First question you need to answer is do you want just 2 channel or do you want to be able to hook it up to your TV and have surround sound too. If you want to hook it up to your TV does your tv have just HDMI output or does it have other options. Once you figure out those things you will know what kind of receiver you want and what kind of inputs you want it to have. 

In my opinion a decent turntable should have adjustable tracking weight, take a half-inch cartridge with removable headshell and have adjustable speed control. I say this because I believe your turntable should give you room to grow and let you try out different cartridges and stylus. I'm not saying that the LP60 and p-mount tables are bad just that they are more limiting. Most of the vintage turntables will not come with a built in preamp. The $17 pyle preamp works just fine as do the phono inputs in most stereos. The more expensive preamps just offer different levels of noise elimination and sound coloring. 

Ah, speakers. The toughest. First question you have to ask is are you married or involved with a significant other and does he/she care what the speakers look like. If not then you have more options. My wife cant stand the look of big floor standing speakers so I had to be a little more creative. 


Here are some new suggestions. In my opinion the bare minimum. You can take these and compare used stuff to these "benchmarks".

I’ve never owned records but I want to get into it. I want something super entry level at a budget price. Basically something that will sound and work decent without much upkeep and that is cheaper to get started with. I would prefer not to spend more than $300 for everything but I don’t think that’s realistic so I can push to $500 and save up. I’m just confused when shopping for vintage stuff online since I don’t know what is a good deal and what questions to ask to make sure I’m not being ripped off. From what I’ve read and seen so far I’ve seen that Crosley isn’t good, Pioneer, telefunken, etc are higher quality, and to look for something like At-LP60 or At-LP120 for entry level. I’m also stuck on whether to get a built in or external preamp and what kind of speakers to look for. It just feels overwhelming to know where to start. MCM and Vinyl is also extremely popular where I am so the good ones go fast and prices are higher. I originally was looking at vintage stereo consoles and recently decided I would rather get one that’s not all in one for better quality. 

I’m in Denver CO and have been using Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Craigslist, eBay (using search terms “turntable”, “record player”). I also have access to Amazon prime. I would prefer something vintage but I’m open to all help and advice. Thank you!

I want an entry-level turntable setup for no more than $300-500 but I’m overwhelmed by options and my lack of knowledge when browsing used systems on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.

I've wanted a record player for years and now I'm finally going for one. But I don't know what to buy. I thought about the Audio Technica LP60 but a lot of people didn't like it. I'm gonna play vinyls very often, probably about 4-7 days a week. I'm willing to spend up to 230 (250 max) What to buy?

Which turntable shoule i buy?

 So I did my due diligence with research and decided to give the C200 a go, audio snobs be damned.  You know what? I was pleasantly surprised. The C200 arrived in a very sturdy box with styrofoam packing material. Once I had the turntable out, the assembly took maybe 20 minutes, and that included setup and the adjustment of the tonearm's counterweight and tracking

 Since the C200 has a built-in preamp (which can be switched off if you so desire), I hooked in my desktop speakers (Mackie CR3s) and started spinning. The sound was rich and warm and exactly what I wanted. And I didn't have to spend $500 on a turntable to get this kind of sound.

 The included cable is too short to be of any use, and the built-in pre-amp causes the music to distort a bit when the volume is high.  All in all, however, I would recommend this Crosley C200 Direct Drive Turntable to someone just getting started with vinyl. It has a few features found on higher end turntables included and it won't break the bank. Crosley's new C line of turntables was created to help with the negative image of their suitcase and all-in-one models, and in my humble opinion, they have a very nice beginner's turntable here

My last turntable was an old Sony that was part of a component stereo system I owned in the early to mid 90s. I sold the stereo, but I managed to keep my records with me through every move, and recently returned to collecting again. I needed a new turntable, but my budget was limited to the $250 range and under. I heard a lot about the Audio Technica LP-60 and its low price, but after doing some research into it, I discovered that it had its fair share of problems
