 It took 48 minutes to execute a complex MatLab portfolio simulation. Again, these were quite good scores—the Excel one was the fastest I've seen from any Tiger Lake-U machines.The 9420 has a 60-watt hour battery; I got over 11 hours on my battery test, notably better than I saw with the X1 Yoga. PCMag got more than 14 hours in a video playback test

 I tried Dell's WD19TB Thunderbolt 3 dock and OWC's Thunderbolt Dock and it worked fine with external drives, an external keyboard, and with both a 2,560-by-1,440 HDMI monitor and an FHD DisplayPort monitor.The unit I tested had an 11th Generation Intel Core i7-1185G7 (Tiger Lake), a 4-core/8-thread processor with a nominal speed of 3GHz and vPro support, made on Intel's 10nm SuperFin process, with 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD. In general, it did nicely on most of the normal benchmarks I ran, a hair behind the Lenovo X1 Carbon.On my most difficult performance tests, it took 41 minutes to complete a large Excel model with a data table and Monte Carlo simulations, about the same as the other Tiger Lake machines

The unit I tested had a QHD+ 2,560-by-1,600-pixel touch display in a 16:10 ratio. (The laptop version has a non-touch FHD+ 1,920-by-1,200-pixel display.) For typical office applications, the higher resolution doesn't matter that much on a 14-inch screen, but the higher-resolution display is better with a pen, as you can be more precise, and the screen looked very good. (Note, though, that the competing X1 Yoga offers a 3,840-by-2,400-pixel display if you want high resolution)

The 9420 has a 60-watt hour battery; I got over 11 hours on my battery test, notably better than I saw with the X1 Yoga. PCMag got more than 14 hours in a video playback test. Living With a Dell Latitude 9420 2-in-1

Unless you are enrolled in a phd program in machine learning and for some reason your lab refuses you to provide you with a pc and you have to finance a 6k$ build yourself. Or you are a 3d modelist at the end of your curriculum and you need to render scenes, most of us do not need the processing power. That include you CS students, you don't need 8 cores 16 threads to sort an array or invert a binary tree, most of what you'll run can be processed on a 5 year old smartphone. I mean that litterally, when I studied CS half a decade ago I was running code on a low end smartphone that was already a few years old. That being said I do not recommend to run code on your phone but it's not the point being made. If you don't need the processing power the portability and versatility of a laptop will outweight any advantages of a desktop you build yourself. Yes the 400$ build you made with a ryzen apu will outclass any similarily priced laptops, however your 10kg tower, your keyboard, monitor and mouse may be a little bit frustrating to use on the train, in class, at the library and when you're traveling back and fourth between your dorm/appartment and your parent's place.

If you want a desktop for gaming, say you want it for gaming, we're not your parents you don't need to justify your expenses to strangers on the internet.       
       
If you're on the laptop train, do not take a gaming laptop, if you want to be stuck on a power socket with a christmas tree panini press that weight and sound like an Airbus get one but otherwise don't. Even if gaming laptops have come a long way since last decade they are still the worse of both world.       
        
From that point you have two options, either go with the cheapest win10 laptop with an ssd and enough ram as your workstation or get a professional ultrabook. As a student I chose this option, you can also get a used macbook pro they're great for coding, and retain their value well so you can resell when you upgrade. Of couse if you can you can also take the other option of the professionnal ultrabook like the M1 macbook air or dell xps, they're mad expensive, and you won't be able to play games like a gaming laptop but they make up for it on everything else from battery life to keyboard, to build quality and display. You can also cut the apple in half and get a midrange i5 or renoir laptop though personally I'd rather either go all cheap as a student and all the way to high end as a working adult.

You don't need to build a pc for school

 (Since these are business laptops, companies often buy them in bulk for lower prices.) I tested a more expensive 2-in-1 model listed at $2,926.75 that includes a Core i7-1185G7, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and a 2560 x 1600 touch display. You can go all the way up to a $3,309 model with the same processor and screen but 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage

The first thing to emphasize about the 9420 is that it’s not at all cheap. The base model starts at $2,039 and includes a Core i5-1135G7, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 14-inch 1920 x 1200 screen. (Since these are business laptops, companies often buy them in bulk for lower prices.) I tested a more expensive 2-in-1 model listed at $2,926

 But the stamina seemed to be heavily influenced by certain settings. When I ran a trial on the Better Performance Windows profile, I got under two hours of juice. I averaged over 10 hours when I ran trials on the Windows Battery Saver profile and Dell’s Quiet cooling profile with Dell’s Battery Extender on, Intel’s power savings on, and the AI features in Dell Optimizer (including the proximity sensor) off.

I need a laptop that has an i5 or i7 cpu, min 8gb ram, 14 or 15" screen (full hd), 256+ SSD. There are many, many laptops with these specs but the most important aspect is that it has ultra durable hinges because the screen gets opened and closed ALOT every day. The last 2 laptops lasted just over a year before the hinges came apart (right out of warranty period on both). I know there are the ultra rugged offerings that are so bulky it looks like it could be run over by a car or dropped from 30 feet and be fine. This still needs to look and feel like a regular modern laptop. Price range is around $1000-$1200 ish. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I'm so frustrated with the Lenovo shipping/order situation that I'm willing to look elsewhere but I can't seem to find anything on the same level as the carbon or nano.

If I was into MacOS I would go for an M1 Mac but I'm more of a Linux guy or Windows as a secondary choice.

I have a nano on order but I'm very frustrated with the process.
