I've been really impressed with the Edifier s1000 mkii, extremely practical and well rounded speakers for the price, the fidelity and detail leaves very little to be desired. I have also not heard a bad word about the 1850s and 1700s which apparently are better suited for near field listening and probably more suited to your budget.

Hi all, 

After using crappy monitor built-in speakers for years, I finally decide to invest some money(not a lot though) in getting a good pair of speakers. But it is difficult for me to pick a nice budget one. My **budget is around CAD 200** (or USD 150). Mostly listening to electronic, classic, and pop music. I will use it as multimedia as well.

As a newbie to audiophiles, should I get some decent active speakers like Edifier, Presonus? Or I should split my budget in half, get a brand new amplifier, and used passive speakers. Something like Audioengine A2+ or Kanto yu2 will be nice although they are out of my budget. I really like their design.

[Help] Desktop Speaker Suggestions

 I understand that lows require some mileage until the speakers “break in” but I don’t understand why highs are so bad out of the box.  Tried Edifier S2000pro and S2000mkIII and loved both of them. S2000 are only $50 more but they come with upgraded tweeter and presets for different type of music. Both sound great and I recommend S2000 instead of S1000

 The best path for the signal is via optical or coax inputs as the speakers have fully digital bi-amplifier separate for lows and highs. The twitter for highs can go as high as 40KHz which means that it should work optimally with less distortion at very usable 15KHz frequency.  All of that is great but at the end it’s all about your ears and the room where these speakers play. To my ears in my big room these $350 speakers don’t sound good at low or high volume in comparison with $99 R1280Ts that have a single amplifier

Get S2000pro or S2000MKIII, much better sound for $50 more

Have you given the JBL Xtreme 3 a listen?  Thing is solid and sounds good, can charge via USB C and will charge a phone, etc. from the speaker, waterproof.  I really like the thing so far.  I'm sure some people will hate on them, just because they're JBL, but they make some killer gear.  

I've had the bowers and wilkins T7 for about 7 years until it literally couldn't take my abuse anymore.  I must say, it did sound fantastic, especially for the size.  It did stand up to A LOT of use though.  So, it was important for me to get something waterproof this time, and I was also tired of carrying around a wall wart with it.  

B&W makes a zeppelin model or something for in-home, less portable use.  I would give that some consideration if you're not taking it outside and all over the place.  

Now I'm curious about that mini rig for carry on travelling though.  :-O

Best bluetooth speakers (closest to audiophile quality)?

 The sound field is wide, I sometimes close my eyes and can't tell where the sound is coming from because it fills out the space.  I have learned to appreciate good engineering and recordings with these. Most of today's music is compressed garbage and these speakers don't lie. Be sure you give a lot of different source material a try

Great sounding speakers & features but..

** You want consumer-oriented powered speakers, that have connections and controls that are suited for use with consumer equipment. If you can go up to the $300ish range, I would suggest looking at the nicer Edifier models—maybe the S1000mkII if you can find it locally, or maybe something in the R1850 or R2000 series. If you can find any speakers made by Swan, they also have some well-liked options. FYI, **most of the speakers you listed are NOT studio monitors

Hi, I need near field speakers, basically trying to replace headphones with speakers next to my PC after I got tinnitus. I intend to use the speakers at relatively low volume next to the PC (to hopefully not annoy neighbors), as such the priority is sound quality at low volume and it does not matter too much how loud the speakers can be. I listen to all kinds of music, play games and watch youtube a lot, so they should be generally applicable. Latency is also an issue for games, so hopefully if the speakers are bluetooth, either the latency is low or there is still some way to use them with low latency wired. Also the speakers will need to be placed somewhere on the table next to the PC, so, while I will try to figure out something if they are bigger, being relatively compact would be a nice to have.

Since amazon shipping costs quite a bit here (especially for something like speakers) it is generally cheaper to get items like this locally. I have compiled a list with some studio monitors (they seem to fit the on the desk / near field use case from what I understand) based on a lot of top lists I found together with local prices (in euros). They should all be for pairs (unless I made a mistake somewhere). Feel free to suggest any other speakers. 

If possible it would be nice to consider the price difference vs quality as well - if something is a 100 euros more expensive but very slightly better, it might be better to go with the cheaper option. Basically which from these speakers would you see as the best price to value for the use case.

Which near field speakers would you pick for general use from this list?

I am in total awe of this sound for this money. Crystal clarity all up the spectrum and tight base with good extension. BUT - the treble and bass dials are dead. I only noticed because I wanted to turn down the bass for the DUNE movie (via optical connection) so I wouldn't disturb my downstairs neighbors

I've researched and tested this speaker bracket ad nauseum, and I have yet to find anything that can compete.

I've tested them next to audioengine, Kanto, Fluance, and many others. Nothing in the price range can match them sonically, let alone once you bring in build quality, components, and features. Studio monitors can compete sound quality wise, but lack convenience and are built for near field - the KRKs I used to have back in the day were similarly priced and decent, fat, and warm (boomy, harsh, and colored too), but I still think I'd rather master a track on my edifiers. I've also tested the Edifiers next to some decent passive speakers (KEF, Polk, B&amp;W, PSB, etc.) and they hold up surprisingly well.

The Edifiers just don't have any major flaws. They could use more presence, warmth, depth, and soundstage, but they are so damn tight, flat, and dynamic with great range and no fatigue. They are sensitive to placement and don't have a sub out, but they have every other feature you'd want.

So please, can someone point me towards a better active speaker in this price range? I will buy it and test it; write a review if the people so desire. I'll never give up this hunt, cause that's what (budget) audiophiles do.

Feel free to ask questions on active speakers in this range, give suggestions, or tell me about suggestions in the $500-$100 price range (especially if you've tested them next to some of the others mentioned).

These guys aren't tiny, but they produce great sounds that fills a small living room nicely. Probably best about them is that they don't require a receiver and can be added to your TV, computer, or record player.  The Bluetooth features work way better than expected and produce rich and clear sound from a phone or laptop. My only gripe there is that there isn't much security on the speakers, so really anyone could use it if it's turned on

Aiwa exos-9 is one of the best BT speakers but if you listen hip-hop and electronic music you will be more satisfied with bass quality party speaker than speaker for clear critical listening.
Best VFM for you is without doubt JBL partybox 100.
If you needs something louder but without battery you can check also availability and price of Panasonic SC-UA7E or even better Panasonic SC-UA90 in your country.
SC-UA7E have port noise at high volumes but you can overcome bass distortion by reducing it at high volumes and increase it at low volumes.

If you don't need portable speaker and will listen only in apartment active bookshelf speakers + sub will get you far better sound quality than any BT speaker. 
In this case switch to r/BudgetAudiophile

seeking bluetooth speaker rec for small apartment

Just set them up today. They sound good but was hoping for better bass. Also the digital audio input isn’t working, not sure if it is my TV output or the speakers input, guess I’ll be calling for support to troubleshoot it.  Update: the digital audio works with everything from my TV except Disney+ or if I watch live broadcast TV from my outdoor antenna
