 This mix sounds more crisp and bright than anything else, with Callahan's rich baritone receiving some definition in the high-mids and the guitar strums and higher percussive hits benefiting from the excellent high-mid and high frequency clarity.

Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene in John Adams' The Gospel According to the Other Mary, sound phenomenal through the ER4 XR. The lower register instrumentation gets a little added depth, but never anything that sounds unnatural. The higher register strings, brass, and vocals are delivered with strong definition and brightness, but the mids are never ignored. You hear detail and definition throughout the frequency range, with beautifully resonant lows when they appear in the mix, and excellent clarity on the brass stabs and vocal performances

 The kick drum loop's attack gets plenty of treble presence, allowing it to stay sharp and slice through the layers of the beat, while the vinyl crackle in the background isn't pushed too far forward, but is definitely illuminated a bit more than it is through earphones that have less presence and clarity in the high-mids and highs. The three vocal performances on this track are always clear and crisp&mdash;there's superb definition in the high-mid and highs, but never any added sibilance or harshness.

If you've read any of my other reviews, you know that I value accuracy when it comes to audio. The most accurate in-ears are probably the ER4 XR's siblings, the Etymotic ER4 SR. Yet the ER4 SR might sound almost clinical and a little light on bass response to many listeners, while the ER4 XR (which stands for "extended response") earphones deliver nearly identical high frequency definition while adding in a little more bass response. The result is superb clarity matched with full-bodied richness&mdash;every realm of the frequency range is delivered with exciting detail

Jumping on the Starfield bandwagon.

I was hoping for something amazing. These did not live up to expectations. I compared them to a pair of Denon AH-C120s ($100) and a pair of Nu-Force earbuds NE800M ($90). These two earbuds produce a richer, more 3D sound sound then the Etymotic ER4XRs

 I do like the fit and weight of the ER4XRs. They are very light as are the Denon's (Nuforce's are very heavy in comparison). I will continue to use them and maybe in time come to give a more favorable review.

I Was So So Hoping...But.....

 I'm like you know totally okay with not being able to hear a mosquito that wandered into the recording studio because it doesn't really have much of a practical effect. More importantly the XR may not sound overtly harsh but it still can sound a bit raw and it has a sort of mid-forward glare to the sound that the smoother ATH IMO 2 doesn't have. Now I think of the XR as a natural upgrade to the IMO 2 that I've been looking for for a long time because it does have a better bass section, a punchier bass and a clearer vocal section but it doesn't have the same smoothness as the IMO 2. And if you wanted something with similar levels of clarity but with richer bass tone and less mid-rawness for around the same price I'd go the AKG N40 which I picked up in Hong Kong and so far I'm liking a lot as well

 Now the ER4 XR lacks a little in terms of high extension. Now I can verify this with test tones because basically I can hear up to about 18kHz and the XR like it says on the spec sheet does top out at about 16kHz.  Edimotic uses these triple flange ear tips to block out as much noise as possible. Now, whether they're comfortable for you is probably very dependent on the shape of your ear canal. For me, I found them surprisingly comfortable. Now keep in mind you can't compare this graph with other frequency response graphs without an idea of the testing rig, the methodology and the compensation they've used to produce this graph

 The new Edimotic ER4XR. An earphone with a custom driver tuned to sound like the SR in the highs, but with a 3 to 4 decibel bass boost in the low frequencies below 100Hz. And I know 3 to 4 decibel bass boost in low frequencies below 100Hz may not be the sexiest sentence in the world, but believe me, this earphone is awesome, and here's why. Etymotic ER4XR Review: A New Reference

I am trying to look into a pair of in-ears that I can use as monitors.  I do have several questions though:

1. Are the ones that are used for audiophile music same as the ones used on stage for the purpose I described?
2. Would anyone have a budget recommendation for best in class say, for 100 USD / 150 USD / 200 USD for said purpose?
3. I googled and a quick look gave me brands like Shure SE 210 and Sennheiser IE 40 Pro, these are known brands; are there such things as "sleeper" brands like a friend was telling me about these KZ ZSN Pro X earphones that go for like 24 USD.  China made, but he swears they are decent.
4. Last, am I on the right sub for this, if not, please excuse me and point me in the right direction.

Hello, first time poster here looking for budget iems for stage performance

A giant step away from precision for Etymotic.

 You see that right there? That's just going to disappear into the inside of your ear. The cable that they come with is, again, pretty utilitarian and heavy duty and I think it's very nice. And it still comes across as very, I think, a relaxing listen, which overall I think you could say for the sound signature is that it's a comfortable, relaxing listen. That said, while it is a nice, comfortable listen, I don't know that it's necessarily the most engaging listen

Alright, so I've spent the last two weeks listening to the Edimotic ER4 XR and trying to figure out, are these things just a tool or are these actually a good music listening earphone, right? These things are basically made to be super, super accurate and frankly, I'm not really in a position to criticize the accuracy of these things, right? What makes an accurate earphone is kind of going to depend on whatever the industry accepts as accurate and these things, the industry accepts as accurate, so I assume that these things are accurate. I'm not going to really criticize them in that regard

 Sometimes you can find it for under $300, but that's about where you're looking at and that is not cheap, especially compared to a lot of the stuff that I've been listening to. But for the reputation that this earphone has, I don't know, it sounds like this earphone can stand up to a lot of like Summit Fi earphones that cost over a thousand dollars, multi-thousand dollars and you get that for $350, maybe it's a bargain. So is this going to be the last in-ear monitor that I get? Probably not, but let's go ahead and open it up, give it a listen and find out if I have maybe a new standard.
