 Hello friends, Coast Chris here, thanks for stopping by the channel, hope you're having a great day. So I'm at a fork in the road and there's clearly a path that way, and sorry for the spin, there's clearly a path that way. Now it's unmarked here on the trail, so one of the things that I love using my Etrex 22X from Garmin is to verify, hey which way should I go? You can see that dotted line there is a trail, you can see I'm taking the Wildlands Trail here in Gunpowder Falls State Park in Maryland, that blue line is where I've been, turn the light back on, and you can see that to the right, that's just a neighborhood access trail to the park, but it even has it listed there, which is really impressive, so now I know that I need to turn left. I'm planning a tour through europe this summer, the idea being to go from Oslo down to the italian coast, mostly following eurovelos and mostly camping with the odd hotel/hostel here and there. I'd like to know what most people use for navigation...

3. Maps
4. Just wing it/follow the eurovelo signs and road signs?

I'm thinking I would like a Garmin, but just not sure how regularly I'll be able to charge it. I wont have a dynamo hub but might get some small solar charger. Do a lot of camp sites in western europe have easily accessible power points?

Navigation while touring

 Well that is a flat out lie on Garmin's part. Out of the box, it has less than 1G memory available to download your own maps. The mapset I had installed on the 20 will not fit on the 22x! yeah sure it comes preloaded with a map but I won't be able to tell if it's as good as my old one for some time and I'd rather not find out by getting out in the back of beyond. I was expecting to be able to have my old map set which is very detailed for my corner of the world, and then the preloaded map for the rest of the country

Do you guys have any tips about power usage / recharging on the road, or advice on navigation or GPS/bike apps? Currently using Komoot but don't wanna buy it just yet.

What do you guys do for power (electric/battery) when wild camping?

Kind of a cool device, but seems primitive in the hardware and software

As a hiker / rock climber I would LOVE to sell my $350 garmin inreach and cancel its $26/month subscription. An emergency satellite beacon integrated into iPhone would be great and give garmin some sorely needed competition. Garmin's hardware is good but its software and support are dogshit. And $26/month for years has almost added up to a thousand in fees.

This feels like a wildly unnecessary feature. 

In the United States, carriers like Verizon and the newly merged T-Mobile plus Sprint have coverage maps that blanket nearly the entire country. If you need to make a phone call, you will at least get a voice call out. 

If you are backpacking or hiking the wilds of Alaska or some unfathomably remote region of Montana, you are not going to depend on your iPhone - serious explorers and adventurers are going to carry one of the small Garmin eTrex offline GPS handhelds with GEOS or InReach 24/7 monitored Search and Rescue emergency service. 
 
Apple maps and Google maps are no replacement for the maps available on serious adventure products and these devices are ruggedized and purpose designed for long battery life, not watching YouTube or browsing on a large glass screen. 

And boy if you think Apple products are expensive wait until you find out how much it costs to be helicoptered out of the middle of nowhere. 

There is a legitimate concern that adding a safety feature to consumer smartphones is going to embolden people who are inexperienced or ill prepared to go places they have no business going with equipment not designed to go there, and just wait until you get that med evac bill.

Sorry, the iPhone 13's satellite features will likely be only for emergencies. And they're probably coming next year.
