I'm planning a tour through europe this summer, the idea being to go from Oslo down to the italian coast, mostly following eurovelos and mostly camping with the odd hotel/hostel here and there. I'd like to know what most people use for navigation...

1. Garmin/satnav? 
2. Smartphone
3. Maps
4. Just wing it/follow the eurovelo signs and road signs?

I'm thinking I would like a Garmin, but just not sure how regularly I'll be able to charge it. I wont have a dynamo hub but might get some small solar charger. Do a lot of camp sites in western europe have easily accessible power points?

For an athletic person who also does weight lifting, what would be the better choice. Forerunner 55 or Venu Sq. I'm personally leaning towards the Forerunner cause of the looks. Is it worth it, or am I going to miss out on the water and sleep tracking. Also looking if both of them can work with MyFitnessPal to track calories, and be used for weight training. Switching between an Apple watch 2.

Hey guys, I’m a very new high school long distance runner ( started around 10m ago) and I’m looking for a decent, budget entry level watch. I’ve been getting quite serious about training, and I’m beginning to see results in competition. I’ve previously owned a FitBit Charge 4, but the plastic that connects the wrist band literally snapped off. I’m looking for a durable but entry level watch that would be able to replace my phone in my pocket when I go for runs. Something that can provide me with detailed analytics which could help me in properly training. Due to price however, I’ve narrowed my search down to the Forerunner series, but I’m having a bit of trouble still. 

Deciding between the 935, 245 Music & 55. They’re all around the 300-400AUD price point. Is it worth the extra money to get the 245 Music, should I invest in the old 935 model or should I just get the Forerunner 55?

Looking for a watch that gives training status  for aerobic activities OTHER than cycling or running. From what I have read, Garmin only gives training effect and load for other activities.

I am considering the forerunner 245 and recording other aerobic activities under "running" -- since I really like the garmin ecosystem (had the vivosmart 4 until I lost it) and have had bad experience with fitbit HR sensor (doesnt work for intense activities). 

Any other ideas?  thank you!

Weekly Discussion Thread

  Garmin Express connects to the GPS, identies it as an eTrex 32x, and says it does not support this device and to use Garmin Map Updater instead. It's stated in 2 places on the Garmin website that Garmin Express supports the eTrex 32x.  I tried Garmin Map Updater and it says it's unable to connect to the internet (and I tried disabling all anti-virus and firewall).  Then I found and tried Garmin Web Updater, which is what Garmin BaseCamp launches to update the device software

Garmin BaseCamp connects to the GPS but says it cannot transfer waypoints or routes to it as the GPS does not support them (it does) or BaseCamp needs to be upgraded (and it's at the latest version and development of it stopped in 2018)

My friend has been the navigator so far, but I wanna become self reliant and get the GPS going too. I noticed today my phone was absolutely slurping power and it had me worried for when I go solo. Do you guys have any tips about power usage / recharging on the road, or advice on navigation or GPS/bike apps? Currently using Komoot but don't wanna buy it just yet.

What do you guys do for power (electric/battery) when wild camping?

 It may be useful for those without a car or something? I hate being negative but it’s the truth..

 The screen is too small. It feels like it’s using really old GPS technology? Maybe if you don’t have a car with all the newest and best gadgets you might like it? Compared to the GPS in both of the ESCALADE’S in owned in the past few years this lil thing feels like a toy. It may be useful for those without a car or something? I hate being negative but it’s the truth.
