 So what I do is I have one down by my router, and I have it plugged into that, and then I plug the router one into my cable TV wiring in my equipment closet, and then for every room where I want to add an extension, I just get another box and plug into the cable jack in that room. And what these do is allow you to continue using your TV service. So if you've got your cable box plugged into the wall, you take that wire out of the wall, and you put it in here where it says TV, and then you connect the wall to the spot here that says Mocha, and then your connection is made. And if you are just looking for a simple connection, you're done

 And it looks like they're communicating encrypted at the same data rate as before, but we're going to put this to the test now and run another speed test and see what these encrypted speeds look like. So after enabling encryption, we ran both tests again, and we didn't see any difference in performance, including the multi-computer test that we ran to measure the total amount of backbone bandwidth. So it looks like there is no performance penalty for enabling the encryption. So that's going to do it for this look at the GoCoax Mocha 2

 Now for most people, that's going to be fine, but you will not be able to get the full speed of the adapter to each client. The speed is going to be shared by all the adapters in the house. So if you do have clients that are frequently sending large files to each other, you could have more people doing that at the same time on your network than you would with the prior generation Mocha, because now you've got two and a half gigabits versus just one gigabit, and that will allow more data to be transited across your network at the same time over the coax. But all of these devices on your network share that two and a half gigabits, but having that greater backbone, I think, for some instances, will be a very big improvement

I'm very excited, as after work today I'll get to install my new GoCoax Moca 2.5 adapters. After reading as much as I could find on the subject, I have some concerns with Docsis 3.1 and Moca 2.5 coexisting -- however it would simplify things. Here's my use case:

When quarantine happened and my wife began working from home I had a great excuse to put some money into the home network. I upgraded to Comcast's 1200 Mbps plan, which after a frustrating week of downgraded performance, I realized meant upgrading my cable modem to something docsis 3.1 capable -- a bummer because I purchased my previous "gigabit capable modem" thinking I'd be future proofed.

I replaced my Asus router/ap with a low power passively cooled computer with 4 nics running PFsense. Stuck a switch on that, connected the wife's work computer and a unifi AP (powered with poe from the switch, very slick!).

Previously, all this equipment was in the living room where most of the network and internet accessing occurs. To get the wife hardwired for work I moved everything to her office in our bedroom -- downstairs and on the opposite end of the house from the living room.

That distance, plus the crowded wifi in the neighborhood, everyone at home all the time with every TV, phone, and laptop streaming hd video and zoom meetings, the wifi upstairs is performing as you'd expect. I've known of the power line adapters for years, but never heard great things and dismissed them, kind of lumped the coax options in that same boat. After lurking in this sub, was excited to learn that moca is a very viable option to get a hardwired network upstairs. And this brings us to the fun part.

We rent. We have Comcast 1200mbps docsis 3.1 internet, no TV service just internet. The PoE is very clean and straightforward on the outside corner of the house with one splitter and individual coax runs to each wall plate. I ordered a PoE filter to place between the main line and the splitter.

Question 1. This splitter, it has the main input, one coax input for power (my understanding of which is if it's powered it's amplifying the signals -- the sticker is getting sun faded so many details are obscured), several normal outputs, and one specific output for the cable modem (had to figure this one out when I moved everything downstairs, what a p.i.a. that was -- have purchased a coax tracer -- never again!!). So clearly this thing is at the very least filtering out the docsis from the rest of the house, and maybe filtering the television bands from the modem? Is it worth trying this with the Comcast provided splitter or is my instinct to just cut it out completely the correct one? And if I do, should I put a terminator on the coax that is providing power? Or leave that splitter in place, powered on, and just use the possibly amplified output for the modem? So mainline -&gt; poe filter -&gt; Comcast provided splitter input -&gt; Comcast provided splitter modem output -&gt; my own passive splitter -&gt; to wall plates.

Question 2. I'd like to put the modem and Moca adapter on the same coax run, my understanding is I'll likely have to go into the MOCA settings and adjust the frequencies to avoid docsis 3.1. maybe looking at the configuration for the modem to see what frequencies are in use. If I do this, is it possible that Comcast will change those frequencies within Docsis 3.1 causing future issues? Will I leave enough bandwidth for the MOCA network (I could see adding one more MOCA adapter in the future in the daughter's bedroom for gaming.) Or is this nuts and just a headache I don't want? There is a second wall plate in the bedroom, I could leave everything with the Comcast splitter and cable modem as it is right now, run a cable along the walls above the door frames to the other wall plate (I don't love this option but if I'm going to end up having to do this anyway, might as well start there.) In this case I would detach from the Comcast splitter those wall plates and use a barrel connector (or passive splitter if I add a third) to join the MOCA adapters and not have to worry about the PoE filter, any filtering on the Comcast splitter, or playing nice with Docsis.

Docsis 3.1 and Moca 2.5

 As such, the older units represent a slight bottleneck between us and the outside world, but we're unlikely to max out both directions at once, and our current service only represents 1.1G of traffic in total if we were to do so.  I'm done with these goCoax adaptors. I've wasted enough time attempting to work with them, and they're going back to Amazon

 They easily support the full bandwidth advertised by our ISP (800M down, 300M up) and the ping time to the router is roughly the expected 3.5ms or so. Hilariously, the trip to 1.1

 I have also tried a couple of different coax runs, in case the problem lies with a specific length of cable, but neither of these experiments made any difference. I recognise that the quality of the cabling in the walls can affect things, but the problem doesn't smell like the cabling is the problem. I would have expected the bad & dropped frame counters to tick up on at least one of the adaptors, but they're all permanently stuck at zero.  I've also tried all combinations of the three adaptors on either end of the main LAN run in case I have a defective one; this also didn't help at all

 The main reason I wanted 2.5 adaptors was the higher bandwidth should allow for the equivalent of a duplex gigabit link over coax, making the link look equivalent to 1G ethernet, just with more latency. As such, the older units represent a slight bottleneck between us and the outside world, but we're unlikely to max out both directions at once, and our current service only represents 1.1G of traffic in total if we were to do so

Works about 98% of the time. Unreliable. Returning.

I have been reading a lot about people waiting to get their hands on the MoCA 2.5 with 2.5 GE Port. I just got the TL-MC85 from Translite Global which has 2 ethernet ports, one is 2.5GE and the other is 1GE. Earlier I had the Actiontec MoCA 2.0 and chose the TL-MC85 from Translite Global only because people were crazy for 2.5GE ports. I chose to anyway buy these as they were reasonably priced compared to the GE port ones. But is there actually a difference with 2.5GE port as most devices have only GE ports?

MoCA 2.5 - True 2.5. Is it worth it?

 0% loss at 10 Mbps, 0.001% 150 Mbps, 0.01% at 940 Mbps. This was in my current setup using mostly new coaxial over 50 ft long

 However I am very satisfied with my current goCoax devices and performance. --------- This product isn't quite turn key, but once configured and tested it is amazing. The devices really can transmit at 900+ Mbps over non-ideal coaxial cable. The latency is very low

 Afterwards I replaced my cat5e ethernet cables with cat8 and saw a minor improvement.  The devices have been reliable. I can't completely explain why I am see better results now - perhaps a reboot/update to my router.  Still leaving a 4 star instead of 5 since I had one device with more drops that was replaced

  So in summary, these devices are great. But be prepared to test them yourself. Be prepared to have a couple tries on splitter, filters, and wiring setups before you get it right! But it is worth it.

I’m looking to run an ethernet cable around the perimeter of my house. I already have a standard cat6 ethernet cable, and I’m wondering if this could be used outdoors for around 15 meters (50ft)? Both inputs will be indoors. Happy to make any optimisations if necessary.

If not, what would be the best way to go about it?

It is a rental property so unfortunately I can’t make any permanent changes (through walls, etc).

Running ethernet cable outdoors

 Mainly the downstairs set up.  Once these babies connected though. My god, it just works!!! I am consistently pulling 260Mbps upstairs. It is blazing fast through all of the coaxial cables running in my house+ 25’ addition

 “Can a network be established with existing coaxial cables?” I googled it and I’ll be damned. There actually was a established network protocol call Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance. And it would pass through up to 2.5Gbps!!! Imagine my surprise

 Pending your setup you will need two or three more coaxial cables. I needed a 3’ one from wall to MoCA adapter, then from there to the modem. Ethernet cable plugged into the router downstairs. Then upstairs, I ended up getting a 25’ cable to go across the room around the corners behind the furniture

 My god, it just works!!! I am consistently pulling 260Mbps upstairs. It is blazing fast through all of the coaxial cables running in my house+ 25’ addition. And I’m running cheap cables too. Not even the quad-shielded ones

I'm currently looking at buying a powerline adapter set. I have tested it with a set of 2 units, 1 at the router and 1 in my backyard. The signal came out really really weak, I was only able to test the ping the MB/s, on the other hand, was too heavy to test.  


I wondered if I could buy a powerline adapter set of 3, where I place the third one in my shed (between my router and my backyard). Does this middle one work as a "booster"?

Powerline adapters, 2set vs 3set

  My iperf3 speeds between hosts when I only had two of these hooked up on the MoCA network were the same as when it was 2x ECB6200s and 1x Motorola NM-1000 - I tested the two GoCoax 2.5 adapters by themselves because I was concerned about one of the devices limiting the network speed, so that shouldn't be the issue. Speeds were consistently around 850Mbps between hosts on my LAN for all MoCA devices, whereas my 1Gbps ethernet line speed w/ cat6 is 940Mbps. It's still definitely close enough for me to be happy! So, basically I wouldn't recommend upgrading for a speed increase until GoCoax starts using a faster ethernet standard (e

5 standard *should* be faster than 2.0, but it's a bit disingenuous for them to advertise as such because the adapters are limited by their 1Gbps RJ45 interface.  That cable adapter is connected to the wall which feeds the signal to two other MoCA adapters connected to an access point and a pc in a different room. These things do operate at the full 2.5Gbs but add a slight but unnoticeable signal delay. So pinging is a little longer but download speed does not slow down

Full 2.5Gbs speed.  Remember to use resistors to terminate unused coax ports.
