Starting With Construction and Design as I always like to do, the Hex Gears, Impulse is a 104 key mechanical keyboard and as you guys can see, it does have that nice exposed switch design which really pairs nicely with the clear kale switches that are in it. but we're going to talk more about those here in just a little bit. but looking at the board, it's got a nice metal back plate that the switches are mounted onto with this sort of sloping design which kind of gives it a little bit of character

 but the nice thing about that is it's not really in your face as it's sort of positioned on the back side and similar to how Ducky brands their boards. It's kind of nice that way if you do have it out somewhere or at a LAN or something like that, people can see whose keyboard it is. but when you're using it, you don't have all this branding like smashed into your face like some gaming companies like to do. Overall Build Quality Feeling: There's very little flex

 As I did say that this board doesn't use software so everything can be done on the keyboard. It is a spill resistant keyboard, which is nice for those of us that are a little bit clumsy and maybe spilling on the board. So now that we've gone over everything that the Impulse has to offer, the most exciting thing about this board is that it's 89 bucks. So just considering that you're getting the Kale Box or Hako switches, the Pbt pudding keycaps, the nice Rgb light bar around it, and just the beautiful animations of the Rgb lighting, The quality of the switches, the quality of the keycaps, the quality of the metal back plate on the board, and just the overall construction for 90 bucks is insane

Hexgears Impulse RGB Mechanical Keyboard Review

 Not even the ampersand, pound sign, or the little orbs of the percent sign are spared this annoying treatment. It looks like the dye is flaking away. As a sometimes hunt-and-peck typist, I find this very distracting, as it keeps me from instantly recognizing many of the keys.  I would rate this keyboard with five stars, if not for the inadequate "user guide" and the poorly thought-out keycap font

 So there's about a quarter-inch gap between the keycap bottoms and the top of the deck. As a result, it's easy to pull the keycaps. You can even remove the Escape key with your bare fingers. I don't think this is a bad thing; it's just worth knowing about

 On most keyboards, you can't see or grasp the bottoms of the keycaps, because they fit into cavities formed by the molded plastic deck. This keyboard's top deck is flat metal, without cavities. So there's about a quarter-inch gap between the keycap bottoms and the top of the deck. As a result, it's easy to pull the keycaps

 I've now got them completely dimmed, and I hope they stay that way.  One thing to know about this keyboard is that the keycaps aren't recessed. On most keyboards, you can't see or grasp the bottoms of the keycaps, because they fit into cavities formed by the molded plastic deck. This keyboard's top deck is flat metal, without cavities

Great for typing

 Looking at the underside of the keyboard, there are two large rubberized pads at the front side of the keyboard, but on the back two corners, there aren't any rubberized pads, and I found that when you use the keyboard flat on the desk, it does slide around a little bit depending on how much pressure you put on it. Now, it does have two-step extendable legs that are rubberized, so if you're like me and you like to have your keyboard at a bit of an angle, you're not gonna run into this issue very much. The cable on the Hex Gears Impulse is a non-removable braided USB cable, and I would have liked to have seen this one be removable just to fit in with all the other enthusiast-grade features that this keyboard has, which we're gonna talk about here in just a minute. The switch types available with the Hex Gears Impulse are the Kailh Box White switch, which is a clicky switch, and the Kailh Box Brown switches, which is a regular tactile switch

 I think already having some enthusiast grade features like the hot swappable switches and the putting key cap stock on there, being able to put a nice custom coil cable on there really would have just been the icing on the cake. But I mean, still for the value of the keyboard, it is quite good. When we look at the hot swappable switches, the fact that you get Kailh box switches stock in it anyways, which are nice switches on their own, the putting PBT key caps, which is a really nice value add, and then of course, just the really nice look to the lighting. But here it is

 Now, I think the overall build quality feels nice and solid. The keyboard's fairly weighty, although not as heavy as some other metal hybrid keyboards out there. On the backside of the keyboard, there is a little bit of Hex Gears branding at the top left corner of the board, but it faces away from the keyboard, so unless you take this keyboard somewhere or people are looking at your desk from kind of a weird angle, the branding really isn't very intrusive here, which I always like to see. Now, one thing cosmetically I don't love about this keyboard is that there's a couple of visible screws in the top plate that I would have liked to have seen if they could have hidden those a little bit more internally in the keyboard, because there's a lot of other all-metal type construction keyboards out there where you're able to hide those screws a little bit, and it's just kind of like a little visual blemish, I think

 And even without doing that, these actually sound really good stock. There's not a whole lot of rattle to speak of, and I'm going to let you guys listen to a quick sound test of the Kailh Box white switches in my Hexgears Impulse. Now, I know some people are going to like that it doesn't have a companion software, which is great because it doesn't blow it up your computer and all that, but it also makes it so that the potential of this keyboard is kind of muted just a little bit, but again, the standard specs are pretty nice. And lastly, just having a non-removable cable is a bit of a bummer for me

The Most Underrated Gaming Keyboard! | Hexgears Impulse Keyboard Review

.. or are they?  While the Pudding keycaps glow very nice, I'm not a fan of the font (a bit odd due to double-shot molding, I presume -- mostly okay-ish but a few characters are total fails), and I don't like the side-by-side character arrangement (many complaints here such as sizing, order, placement, and spacing -- even when limited to an above-LED requirement). Somehow, the sharpness of the edges and other surface friction causes me to hit a lot double keys compared to other keyboards

 Given, however, how often I accidentally hit edge keys like the NumLock, for example, I may need to put stiffer switches in all secondary keys to reduce accidental hits.  Finally, I wish Pudding would make optional keycaps for the bottom row that are convex (like the spacebar) instead of concave. Also, produce a CapsLock and NumLock with gaps that make them harder to stumble on like other brands do (optional as well, of course).

 Another major irritant is that the keycap paint is dark gray on black. Even in good light, I can't read most of it. The paint on the number pad is a bit lighter and can be read in good light (which I don't need), but the rest of it is terrible (which I do need). Keep a flashlight handy until you memorize all the Fn functions (which are different on every keyboard I use

 I'm not fond of the keycaps on the base model and ended up buying replacement double-shot pudding keycaps for better visibility under low-light conditions - very happy with the result. The limited macro and configuration functions (and the need to use keypress combos to activate them instead of configuration software) will be a turnoff to some. I don't need that functionality or versatility.

Overall build quality is quite good and keys seem very responsive.  I think I'm still dialing in my switch preference, but this still performs way better for me than your typical OEM keyboard.
