Looking for a Workhorse Laptop

Ryzen H- or HS-series laptop without discrete graphics

Did I get KP's returned laptop?

Am in need of a fast small ultrabook running Windows 10. I already have a MBA M1 but need a Windows 10 machine. I need a 16x10 or 3x2 aspect ratio and 16GB RAM.

My choices are basically a 4c/8t Intel i7-1165G7 (or 1185G7) laptop, versus a 6c/12t or 8c/16t Ryzen 4x00U APU machine (Ryzen 5000 are so limited and very little choice, so I don't consider it a viable choice now in the UK). 

I will be running an encrypted Windows 10 virtual machine in VirtualBox and working from encrypted file containers - so there will be lots of EAS encryption/decryption going on on multiple levels.

Every single benchmark suggests Intel 11th gen have better single-core performance and higher IPC than Ryzen 4000 Mobile APUs). This is sometimes by a quite significant margin. Clearly, Ryzen 4000 APUs beat Intel in all highly threaded tests.  Also, I understand Intel have special built-in hardware for EAS?

I'm looking at the Dell XPS 13 latest model with i7 1165G7 (a 15W machine I believe), or the Matebook 14 AMD with 4600H APU (6c/8t - a 45W machine).

The Matebook is a discontinued model but can be had for about £800.  The XPS is about £1300, so there is quite a lot of difference.

Am I wrong to be concerned that the XPS might be more responsive/performant for the type of tasks I want to do?

I also need to occasionally connect 3 external FHD displays (2 via a USB-C dock + 1 via another USBC/HMDI port)

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Priority is decent performance in a smaller form factor (I tend to like 14"/smaller with my general workflow being connected to a large external monitor (USB-C->HDMI hub). Occasional travel is expected so smaller than a 15" is good there. I've never tried, but like the look of the HP Sprctre/Envy 360 range for occasional drawing markup but appreciate that these likely have other compromises.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Would prefer something light and portable.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly engineering/data processing (though see above), some photo editing. Ideally I'd like to have a single do-all machine in my life, super heavy work data processing tasks would be pushed to a cloud computing service.  Some light gaming.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Recently have got in to L4D2 with friends online (COVID...), unlikely to be doing any super serious modern gaming but the tipping point for a new laptop was my attempt to run Vermintide 1 at any level of acceptable FPS/Res on my current machine. Primarily this will still be a work machine.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Coming from an Thinkpad X220, I like the rugged build, something that will last. 
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would preference a laptop will last a long time and offer me decent local performance for day to day engineering tasks before pushing larger datasets to AWS. As far as minimum specs are concerned, looking for at least 16gb ram (upgradable) , 512ssd (upgradeable/2 drives?), dedicated graphics card (I think to cover some gaming, though I haven't overly looked at eGPU options). I'd look to run Linux (Fedora) for my day to day, perhaps dual booting windows for gaming options if required. Currently I've spotted the Thinkpad T480/T480s as potential options, and as previously mentioned I do like the look of the Spectre 360, though am aware these are quite different prospects! 


Any advice is very much appreciated, thank you in advance :) I suspect I may be asking too much in terms of 'all sides of the requirements triangle' - a do-all laptop, in a small form factor, not costing the earth...
