 This one was made in company in Maine by a Hyperlight 19 gears. This is really a bomb-proof gear. Ultralight hikers, what gear performs well both hiking and one-bagging?

  The wide straps and friction buckles are large enough to be manipulated in the cold with gloves on.  Forget the bells and whistles, this pack doesn't need them to perform flawlessly.

 Excuse me for for week-long and two-week-long trips. It was perfect for the Pct, held everything I wanted, but um, there was no point looking that around on like 150 mile trip so this I can get everything in for a week or a two week trip. It's comfy to carry. Um, the water resistance is very good

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 2400 Backpack Overview

**Hyperlite 2400 Southwest**: I'm not sold on this pack. With the hard to reach water bottle pockets and the barely padded hip belt and shoulder straps, I'm not sure it's worth the price tag. I bought it at REI so I may return it, we'll see!

 I'll touch on this in the cons but apart from a few minor complaints this thing is extremely comfortable and gave me one less thing to worry about, which is greatly appreciated.

- Weight. This is a very, very light pack for what you get, at around 31oz without any modifications, but there are certainly lighter packs out there. For a thru hike of something like the PCT or Colorado Trail where there's very little technical terrain or chance or pack abrasion, you can probably find options that would provide similar comfort and carrying capacity at a lighter weight, though at the (sometimes *very* significant) cost of durability. But for my personal use in the relatively technical areas of New England, I'd vastly prefer the slight weight penalty in exchange for not having to worry about blowing out a seam or slashing open the main pack body on a rock

 As anyone who has done the long trail knows, there's a lot of fairly technical parts where your pack makes contact with rocks, roots, etc. After 270 miles of abuse, this thing looks like it did the day I got it..

 In terms of dollars per mile, especially for someone who does a lot of hiking in technical environments, I genuinely cannot think of anything on the market which would outperform this pack, especially for the weight. Plus it's waterproof, meaning that my gear stored inside stayed 100% dry even through some pretty significant downpours. 

You get what you pay for...and then some

 The the shoulder straps come right to the very top of my shoulders and I really, really like what they did with the internal stays here I find that I don't prefer packs I don't like packs with any kind of padding in the back like the circuit has a little bit of padding that mesh in the back and I should prefer that ohm and just have a straight piece of fabric I find the mesh actually creates more sweat on my back so I really like how they did this one in terms of Memphis days, it just does a really, really good job and I'm pleased with that. If you look at the shoulder straps, the shoulder straps are just about identical to the Ula shoulder straps they both use. This it gets Rio Bukh Fabric They're almost the same width. They use the exact same mesh on the backside

 So I'm going to do a quick little preliminary review I Have not had this out on in the backcountry yet, but this is just my initial impression of the pack. I Got the 2,400 because I don't see myself needing anything bigger. As you know, the 34 and 4400 are the exact same pack, but they're just taller this most of my packs when I pack out. I don't usually get out right now because of work and kids for longer than a week so weeks

 And that leads me to these side compression straps for the Hyperlight I'm actually not even sure why I put these on here, you know I know that if you want to put a tent down in there or stakes, you want to cinch this down. keep it tight. But in terms of actual compressing the pack down once you get your stuff in here, as long as you keep your sleeping bag loose in your clothes bag not compressed I Don't see this actually performing any function in terms of cinching it back down. Maybe if you use it as a daypack, it might help out, but I don't really see that this is performing any function in terms of compressing the pack down

 The 2400 Hyperlight Mountain Gear In just a rough comparison with the Circuit and the Ohm, all great packs and I'm really looking forward to getting to have the light out on the trail. Happy hiking!

Hyperlite Mountain Gear - Southwest 2400 - Review & Comparison (ULA)

I'm having my mid-life (1/3 life?) crisis and changing careers. I've been a teacher for 8 years but I'm over it and looking to change to something more straightforward (accounting or GIS), or wildlife biology (super competitive but is my dream job).

So I'm applying to grad school for ecology, hoping to start late September 2022. It's insanely competitive and I'm a middle of the field candidate so there's a chance I may not get in.

Here's why I'm listing so many trails in the title:

**If I do get in to grad school**, I need to do some summer learning so probably won't have time for a whole thru hike of a long trail. I'm looking at the Colorado Trail in this case, or the Washington section of the PCT. However, I've already hiked all of the Oregon PCT so I might attempt a PCT thru if I get in and just bus from Ashland to Cascade Locks, which would shave off 3-4 weeks and give me a chance to finish before school starts.

**If I don't get in to grad school**, I'm quitting my job in the spring and going on a thru hike. The PCT is my first choice because I live in Oregon and would love to hike the west coast. However, I don't have a permit so if that falls through, the CDT is my backup plan.

**Location/temp range/specific trip description:** All options are similar in that they include possible snow travel, depending on timing, with lows in the 20s overnight and exposure on portions of the trail.

**Goal Baseweight (BPW):** I'd like to get as close to 10# as possible.

**Budget:** Unlimited, but I'd like to keep individual items under $400, and consider the reward in $/oz.

**Non-negotiable Items:** (Insert response here)

**Solo or with another person?:** Soloooo.

**Additional Information:** Talk to me about tent options. I lost one of my BD Distance Z trekking poles so I need to buy a new one (or new pair) and I could get one compatible with a trekking pole tent. The problem is that without spending \~$600, I haven't found one with a lot of weight savings. Am I missing an option?

Also on the fence about sleeping bag/quilt. My bag is heavier than a quilt, but not by much. I would save 4-5 oz if I went with a 10\* quilt, and I think that would be the equivalent warmth to my 19\* bag. Are quilts from places like HG or EE rated by survival or comfort temperature?

I'm not really interested in a frameless pack at this point, since carrying a Bear Vault and/or 4+ liters of water quickly takes me out of the comfortable weight range for frameless. I know some people do it, but isn't it rough on your shoulders and spine?

I'm really interested in lighter options for anything on my list that you all love in your own kits.

2022 PCT (Or CDT or CT) shakedown

I am a woman with a small frame and havent been bothered by the unisex straps. Because it fits well I dont have too much pressure on my shoulders. And the straps are thin so they break in and conform to you shape.

 I recommend this pack for people who have their base weight dialed in, and it is under 15 lb.

I consider myself a medium weight hiker. My base weight is about 12 lbs and my food weight is about 2 lb/day. I have a 17" torso and opted for the small 2400.

I dont love the compression straps. Theyre pretty useless unless using it as a day pack. Wish they went under the pockets. But with all my overnight gear I hardly need them

[music] Hey guys Ben from Living Survival So I've done a bunch of hiking, backpacking, and camping over the years and there's several different types of packs that I use. There several different categories of packs that I use. If I'm going on a multi-day hike I'm going to take a backpacking style pack something with good hip support, something with good shoulder support something that's going to hold up to the elements and hold up to being used for a few days at a time. In all different types of conditions, Pack size of course is going to vary depending on how long I plan to be out or what conditions such as whether I'm going to face such as in the winter time I'm going to take a maybe larger pack to accommodate winter gear as in the summertime I'm able to go a lot lighter and faster

 By light and fast I mean you want to put a lot of miles in the day through hiking. For example, a lot of people that do the Appalachian Trail or other trails that are similar where they're going to be out weeks or months at a time and they're just packing on a mild day to day light weight is a huge advantage for them, and again, people that do those trails tend to over pack it first and by the time that they're done, they've traded out or swapped out or mailed in and out lighter weight gear so that they can go further distances. In the past few years, several companies including Hyppolite Mountain Gear have been experimenting with new technologies, new fabrics, and putting out high-quality ultralight gear. My Sabra pack is 48 liters plus probably 10 or 15 extra liters on the outside with the pouches making it great for the additional storage that I need for winter time

 You can put a full water bottle in here and then you have this front pocket as well as you invest a ton of stuff in. Now again, I mentioned there were several different models. You can get this one which has the Dyneema fabric on the front or you can get one that has mesh on the front. I Chose this because I believe it's probably going to be a little bit more durable and then you have the reinforced bottom with a ax loop here or as you know, hiking pole loop whatever you want to use that for

 Cordura I use that mainly in the winter because it is a larger pack. It can hold all my winter gear such as larger sleeping bags, larger sleep system, more clothing, things that you would add on in the winter time that you're not necessarily going to need in the summer months.
