 And there you have it folks, audio recorded on my end and then played through your speakers are not the best depiction of audio quality but hence my review here a little bit later towards this review I'll show you or let you hear the comparison between these two, the new model and the older Flip 4. Now first off let me address the speaker by itself before I make the comparison to the previous model. The Flip 5 still gets loud for a small Bluetooth speaker class. It's able to fill up small rooms and somewhat medium-sized rooms for larger open areas

It's more more so for generic audio listening versus really like jamming out. If you're listening or intending I'm sorry and entertaining at the pool let's say getting two of these and pairing them together is ideal or stepping up to a medium-sized speaker at a minimum would be my recommendation

 So going over bass first here for a small Bluetooth speaker it is good you get nice punchy bass that's enough to make pop and EDM and some hip-hop songs here very much enjoyable. In the audio sample Sony this year is an excellent alternative they improved over the previous generation but comparing to the Flip 5 they're playing very close very similar here but the JBL is a little bit deeper a little bit better and also a little bit less muffled bass hopefully it transferred over to the audio sample but the mid-range also is slightly pushed forward which I very much enjoy on speakers vocals stand out instruments are pushed slightly in the forefront and for again the $100 price range it's clear it's not muddy simply a very good experience all around on the Flip 5. Now the high notes are high enough to be enjoyed without being ear piercing testing this at even 90% volume and I know my neighbor is getting pissed here but even that high of a level vocal work to snares still retains its resolution and detail it doesn't get ear piercing it doesn't get distorted when you're standing at a pretty much reasonable distance from the Flip 5. Soundstage wise it's practically absent it's not there and I think this is a good segue into the comparison of the Flip 4

Won't travel without it now, and definitely BIFL as it's taken a real beating.  I watch movies and stream from my hotel room in beautiful sound

Agreed. I still use my moms reference speakers from the ‘70s. They’re still awesome so i had them capped last year. Quality audio equipment is BIFL!

Bluetooth speaks are for travel, and smart speakers are only for telling your real speakers to play. Good sound is absolutely worth investing in.

A pair of Adam Audio A7X speakers have been one of the best investments I’ve made for listening to music. I’m big into house and deep house music, so they are fantastic for that. Used to have a really nice Onkyo receiver for games and tv, but I decided to downsize and go with a smaller footprint soundbar (yeah I know). I don’t really care about great sound for games or tv, but that’s just me. Music though? That’s a different story.

I find it so disappointing when people don't have a nice stereo set in homes. Soundbars and portable speakers do not cut it at parties.

...is a really nice home stereo system. Man, I didn't know what I was missing. It has rekindled my love of music. And I don't mean a really nice Bluetooth speaker, I mean something that makes music you can FEEL, rather than just 'listen to'. Really, every day is better when it's on. 

Maybe this post will get banned because I'm not telling about special products, so I'll tell you my setup: A Marantz 1510 receiver, 5 Minx Min 12 cube speakers, and a Yamaha YST-FSW150. In our small space it totally fills the room, and the Audessey thing on the Marantz head unit makes sure it's tuned for the room, which is awesome.

The BIFL purchase that's made the biggest single impact on my quality of life

 It's available in 14 different color schemes, as well as a camouflage-themed design. As mentioned, for $30 more, you can customize the grille on the speaker to display uploaded art, or work with graphics JBL has on its site. We think ours turned out great, but one word of caution: very small lettering can get obscured by the grille's woven surface. The printing of the graphics for our custom model (designed by JBL for PCMag) looks crisp and clean in person, and the design even gets printed on the controls, which is cool

 And from JBL itself, you can get significantly more bass depth and a similarly outdoor-friendly build from the $180 JBL Charge 4. The good news is that you'll be happy with any of these speakers, so you can't really go wrong.

 The lows have much more of a presence with Callahan's baritone vocals, which have an added richness to them. The high-mids and highs are also sculpted, lending the vocals some added definition and crispness, and the acoustic strums some extra brightness. 

 At more moderate volumes, the bass depth sounds thicker, but this is not a speaker capable of producing subwoofer-like depth. It makes up for it by pushing out the lows and low-mids with the help of the passive radiators.

JBL Flip 5 Review

 So the JBL Flip line of speakers is pretty much the default for anyone that wants an outdoor Bluetooth speaker. It's either that or something like the UE Boom and if you walk into your local electronics store chances are you're walking out with one of those. Now the Flip line has always been relatively affordable at around $99 even when they get updated, and now there's the JBL Flip 5. So how is it? Let's find out

 On top of that, the JBL Flip 5 doesn't have Bluetooth 5. It's still rocking Bluetooth 4.2 just like the Flip 4 before it. So that said, there is one practical and noticeable issue with the lack of Bluetooth codecs here and that's YouTube videos

 But for a speaker at this price point, it isn't bad. Now there is a huge drop off under about 60 Hz so the sub bass in some of your favorite songs just isn't going to be there. Though the larger drivers inside the speaker do help provide some extra emphasis to bass notes at around 100 Hz. Now keep in mind, JBL's wireless speaker tend to follow a signature sound that's roughly similar to the Harman Target Curve

 Still it was a welcome addition in the song The Less I Know the Better by Tame Impala where the groovy bass line is the main part of the song in my opinion. It sounded good enough to hear but wasn't able to get super low due to that hard drop off at around 60 Hz. Now as the mids are less emphasized against the lower frequency notes, sometimes they can be tougher to hear in music with a super strong bass line. This isn't a huge deal when listening to podcasts since there wasn't a lot going on besides voices

Should you buy the JBL Flip 5?

 Someone said that the firmware update reduced battery life but it helped with sound quality. Should I update it? Is it worth it? What's your experience after firmware update?

 It seems to be a wiring issue, which I think I'm probably competent enough to tackle when I finally get sick of it. Rather disappointing. I was expecting better quality from JBL, even in 2020.

 And it's not super expensive. And it does have decent sound for the money. No complaints there. The battery seems to last what they claim

I've been working from home for several months and I like listening to podcasts in the background when I'm not spinning a record. I really don't like wearing headphones (even though I have a really nice pair of bone-conducting ones for at work so I can listen and still converse and talk on the phone if I need to) and I had an el-cheapo bluetooth speaker I had been using for years but since I was now at home all day I decided I splurge on a decent one. I chose the JBL Flip 5. It is reputed to have good sound and since it's waterproof I can feel reasonably comfortable taking it somewhere to do work outside
