Overall, comparing these BICs to more modern speakers is a fun lesson in understanding what actually makes a speaker enjoyable. 

 The JBLs have compact cabinets, active crossovers, godlike waveguides for perfect off-axis behavior, and objectively correct frequency response honed by DSP. The BICs are the opposite in nearly every regard. 

It's interesting how the BICs are pretty close to the opposite of the JBLs, which are literal textbook examples of modern affordable loudspeaker design. If you read and worshipped every page of Toole's book and enlisted a major multinational to build a set of $300 speakers following those principles, the JBL 3-series is what you would create within that price constraint. The JBLs have compact cabinets, active crossovers, godlike waveguides for perfect off-axis behavior, and objectively correct frequency response honed by DSP. The BICs are the opposite in nearly every regard

My daily drivers are JBL 3-series studio monitors (augmented with subs) and the C-Notes DIY kit, both of which are cheap but quite accurate. I'm definitely no "golden ears" but my preference is accurate sound and I've piled up thousands of listening hours on those speakers. So my opinions are at least somewhat grounded in reality, and a hobbyist's understanding of and belief in objective audio engineering principles. 

The Bic RTR Eviction EV-15's key features are a 15 inch driver and a [95db efficiency...that feels like 115db](http://gph.is/2qjWXXP).  Internet rummer falsely attributes their design to [Dr. Poh Hsu](https://www.soundandvision.com/content/dr-poh-hsu-founder-hsu-research), and after having experienced the bass these monsters produce, I see where the rumor got it's legs.  However, they were in fact designed by [Roy Allison](https://www.audioholics.com/news/a-tribute-to-roy-f.-allison), the guy who literally invented the dome tweeter.  It's clear that 60 years of sound and engineering design experience went into making the (almost) last of it's kind monkey coffin speakers.  Tastes have clearly moved on from full sized towers with large drivers, but that also makes them a perfect fit for r/BudgetAudiophile because they need to be absurdly under priced to compete with more trendy options.  [They retail for $450 a pair, but I was able to get mine for $340 shipped to my door with a run of the mill sale and a discount code (NSFW link)](https://youtu.be/8fxCd_AhsLo?t=4).

Detractors will dismiss these out of hand as boomy party speakers, and although they do look the part these sound better than any Cerwin Vegas I have auditioned.  Though to be fair every pair I've heard were crammed into a corner with a keg shoved on top.  If you set EV-15s up properly the overall sound quality is at least as good as any $175~$225 tower I have heard, and with that realistic expectation they really do shine in several areas.

Before modern bookshelf wonder speakers and quality sub-woofers, audio enthusiasts had to rely on plain old physics for good sound.  Big drivers in big boxes to make big sounds.  Dedicated sub-woofers were at one time a fantasy, and then for a time wildly overpriced and laughably underwhelming, so you needed your stereo speakers to be as close to full range as possible. This was an era of legends like the Klipsch Forte and Chorus.  Bigger, badder and more muscular than their competition.

I was lucky enough to have briefly owned a pair of Klipsch Chourus II's, and they are with out question the most compelling speakers I've ever owned.  I've been chasing that high for 20 years.  They sounded lovely, could be [powered by bad breath and colorful language (NSFW link)](https://youtu.be/8fxCd_AhsLo?t=72), and filled any space with chest beating mid-bass even at impossibly low volume.  Devastatingly, I had to let them go when they would not physically fit in my car for a move.  I have deeply regretted that day ever since.  They were however, replaced by a pair of Forte II's that have spoiled me rotten.  The overall sound quality is a notch better and they hit a bit lower in frequency, even if they dont quite put out the same volume of low end that the Chorus's did.  Overall though they are very similar loudspeakers.

20 years latter as I'm putting together a secondary system.  I found r/BudgetAudiophile and asked about the current state of HiFi, and all I got was a [bunch of hipsters shouting at me about magnets physics and 5 inch drivers (NSFW link)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bhYMnHb5JY).  They weren't wrong.  After testing/breaking in some new bookshelf style surround speakers for my main home theater, they make accurate noise down low enough for a dedicated sub-woofer to take over.  [However, at moderate volumes the mid-bass just is not that impressive](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/645/713/888.jpg), they just can't [move the volume of air I'm ~~accustomed to~~ spoiled by](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbt-OfbQTpw).

Enter the [Bic RTR EV-15s or 8.83 times the air displacement of a pair of 5” drivers](https://reactiongifs.me/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/the-avengers-angry-hulk-smash-loki.gif).  Even that number assumes the same Xmax values, but with the [massive foam surround the driver uses it is a safe assumption that the total difference in displacement is even more silly](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/8a5ca50b-62d8-44ba-820d-066aa93221d7). What does that extra displacement get you?  Bass extension and volume of accurate bass.  Playing as low as 40db, you get a full low end, and by 50db you can feel the mid-bass.  This is great sound at genuinely considerate listening volume.  Sure your bookshelf's CAN do the same things with 10db MORE sound pressure, but we cant always listen at higher volumes.

The biggest reason the EV-15's are a good fit for r/BudgetAudiophile is that they play as low as most sub $500 sub-woofers.  They are ratted down to 24Hz or “full range” for music and more “full range” than almost any other main speakers on the market for movies **with out the expense of a  sub-woofer**.  Compare that to the Bic F12 (commonly accepted as the best budget sub) that is only ratted to 25hz.  I currently have them paired with **two** SVS PB-1000's, and after some testing, they barely play 5hz lower, and only slightly flatter than the EV-15's alone (albeit at higher output below 40hz).  This is improvement, but thin sliced for subs that **each** cost twice what the mains do.  By the time you spend enough to hit substantially lower than the Bic's do alone, it is difficult to justify pairing them with budget mains.  At the end of the day we are tying to get people into the HiFi hobby, and old school full(ish) range speakers make for one less box for a newbee to research, understand, purchase, set up, and balance. 

The mids and highs are nice on the EV-15's to boot.  Granted, they dont keep up with my treasured Forte II's, but if I'm not A/Bing them they are close enough not to matter to my ears.  If you are among the pickiest budget audiophiles I'm sure there will be $350 towers that are a bit more accurate, but you will be making trade off's for that (low end, efficiency, dynamics).  

Another boon for new budget minded HiFi enthusiasts is the efficiency of the EV-15's.  They rate at 95db, and feel louder than my Forte's (99db) did in similar sized rooms.  What that translates into overall starting cost is that [they play loud with minimal power](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWWDKZ-kydE).  I have these hooked up to a [80 watt per channel receiver that is locked in at ¼ volume, and that is being fed audio by my computer that is also typically set at 25%](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFoC3TR5rzI).  The EV-15s will easily put out 65db of continuous sound that peaks at 75-80db with these settings.  I wont try to guess how many watts that translates into but if you can only afford a lower power amp, I have no fear that these will strangle out considerably more volume than 98% of other loudspeakers on the market AT ANY PRICE POINT.  People see a bigger than life speaker, and assume that you need equally bigger than life power source to get it up and running, but in reality the opposite is true.  The physics of a big cabinet and horn loaded drivers mean you need less power to get to the same total output, whatever your preferred SPL is.

EV-15's can be found for a newbee friendlyish prices, $340 shipped from a big box retailer.  With direct specialty internet sales companies we have access to the best sound money can buy with whatever sound signature your picky little heart can desire.  However, to audition endless speakers you will need to spend an additional $50 or more to ship back your cute little baby bookshelfs, and it only gets more cost prohibitive to audition towers.  If you try a pair of EV-15's and you think I'm full of crap and EV-15's are pure garbage, your only out some gas and a drive to return them.  That cuts out another massive barrier for new enthusiast. Trying out just 2 sets of bookshelf's drives the total cost up to the next echelon of speaker quality.

The biggest real objection to these speakers is their physical size.  [They are huge (43"x18”x13”), enormous the way you think of gods as big (NSFW)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQWnBC2hmdc).  There is no getting around it.  However, if you look at typical 2.1 audiophile setup's the bookshelf speakers they use are placed 3 feet away from any wall often on bulky stands and a dedicated sub-woofer you quickly outgrow the footprint of two EV-15's, so this criticism is *somewhat moot*.  Being front ported they are relatively tolerant of being placed near walls, so you even have a little more free to place them where you want them, instead of the middle of your room.

WAF and décor are apparently real consolidations for today's audiophile, and I cant deny that these things are as large as they are horrifically out of style.  At least in person, with the grills on, you can't see the red drivers.  In normal home lighting they look just like any other big black electronic box.  

Anecdotally, my wife loves their sound.  She has burst into spontaneous dance more in the past 2 weeks that I've been breaking these in than she ever did in 10 years with the Forte's.  It is not the traditional form of WAF, but I'm happy she is shaking her butt rather than her finger. <div class="md"><p>The Bic RTR Eviction EV-15&#39;s key features are a 15 inch driver and a <a href="http://gph.is/2qjWXXP">95db efficiency...that feels like 115db</a>.  Internet rummer falsely attributes their design to <a href="https://www.soundandvision.com/content/dr-poh-hsu-founder-hsu-research">Dr. Poh Hsu</a>, and after having experienced the bass these monsters produce, I see where the rumor got it&#39;s legs.  However, they were in fact designed by <a href="https://www.audioholics.com/news/a-tribute-to-roy-f.-allison">Roy Allison</a>, the guy who literally invented the dome tweeter.  It&#39;s clear that 60 years of sound and engineering design experience went into making the (almost) last of it&#39;s kind monkey coffin speakers.  Tastes have clearly moved on from full sized towers with large drivers, but that also makes them a perfect fit for <a href="/r/BudgetAudiophile">r/BudgetAudiophile</a> because they need to be absurdly under priced to compete with more trendy options.  <a href="https://youtu.be/8fxCd_AhsLo?t=4">They retail for $450 a pair, but I was able to get mine for $340 shipped to my door with a run of the mill sale and a discount code (NSFW link)</a>.</p>

<p>Detractors will dismiss these out of hand as boomy party speakers, and although they do look the part these sound better than any Cerwin Vegas I have auditioned.  Though to be fair every pair I&#39;ve heard were crammed into a corner with a keg shoved on top.  If you set EV-15s up properly the overall sound quality is at least as good as any $175~$225 tower I have heard, and with that realistic expectation they really do shine in several areas.</p>

<p>Before modern bookshelf wonder speakers and quality sub-woofers, audio enthusiasts had to rely on plain old physics for good sound.  Big drivers in big boxes to make big sounds.  Dedicated sub-woofers were at one time a fantasy, and then for a time wildly overpriced and laughably underwhelming, so you needed your stereo speakers to be as close to full range as possible. This was an era of legends like the Klipsch Forte and Chorus.  Bigger, badder and more muscular than their competition.</p>

<p>I was lucky enough to have briefly owned a pair of Klipsch Chourus II&#39;s, and they are with out question the most compelling speakers I&#39;ve ever owned.  I&#39;ve been chasing that high for 20 years.  They sounded lovely, could be <a href="https://youtu.be/8fxCd_AhsLo?t=72">powered by bad breath and colorful language (NSFW link)</a>, and filled any space with chest beating mid-bass even at impossibly low volume.  Devastatingly, I had to let them go when they would not physically fit in my car for a move.  I have deeply regretted that day ever since.  They were however, replaced by a pair of Forte II&#39;s that have spoiled me rotten.  The overall sound quality is a notch better and they hit a bit lower in frequency, even if they dont quite put out the same volume of low end that the Chorus&#39;s did.  Overall though they are very similar loudspeakers.</p>

<p>20 years latter as I&#39;m putting together a secondary system.  I found <a href="/r/BudgetAudiophile">r/BudgetAudiophile</a> and asked about the current state of HiFi, and all I got was a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bhYMnHb5JY">bunch of hipsters shouting at me about magnets physics and 5 inch drivers (NSFW link)</a>.  They weren&#39;t wrong.  After testing/breaking in some new bookshelf style surround speakers for my main home theater, they make accurate noise down low enough for a dedicated sub-woofer to take over.  <a href="https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/645/713/888.jpg">However, at moderate volumes the mid-bass just is not that impressive</a>, they just can&#39;t <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbt-OfbQTpw">move the volume of air I&#39;m <del>accustomed to</del> spoiled by</a>.</p>

<p>Enter the <a href="https://reactiongifs.me/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/the-avengers-angry-hulk-smash-loki.gif">Bic RTR EV-15s or 8.83 times the air displacement of a pair of 5” drivers</a>.  Even that number assumes the same Xmax values, but with the <a href="https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/8a5ca50b-62d8-44ba-820d-066aa93221d7">massive foam surround the driver uses it is a safe assumption that the total difference in displacement is even more silly</a>. What does that extra displacement get you?  Bass extension and volume of accurate bass.  Playing as low as 40db, you get a full low end, and by 50db you can feel the mid-bass.  This is great sound at genuinely considerate listening volume.  Sure your bookshelf&#39;s CAN do the same things with 10db MORE sound pressure, but we cant always listen at higher volumes.</p>

<p>The biggest reason the EV-15&#39;s are a good fit for <a href="/r/BudgetAudiophile">r/BudgetAudiophile</a> is that they play as low as most sub $500 sub-woofers.  They are ratted down to 24Hz or “full range” for music and more “full range” than almost any other main speakers on the market for movies <strong>with out the expense of a  sub-woofer</strong>.  Compare that to the Bic F12 (commonly accepted as the best budget sub) that is only ratted to 25hz.  I currently have them paired with <strong>two</strong> SVS PB-1000&#39;s, and after some testing, they barely play 5hz lower, and only slightly flatter than the EV-15&#39;s alone (albeit at higher output below 40hz).  This is improvement, but thin sliced for subs that <strong>each</strong> cost twice what the mains do.  By the time you spend enough to hit substantially lower than the Bic&#39;s do alone, it is difficult to justify pairing them with budget mains.  At the end of the day we are tying to get people into the HiFi hobby, and old school full(ish) range speakers make for one less box for a newbee to research, understand, purchase, set up, and balance. </p>

<p>The mids and highs are nice on the EV-15&#39;s to boot.  Granted, they dont keep up with my treasured Forte II&#39;s, but if I&#39;m not A/Bing them they are close enough not to matter to my ears.  If you are among the pickiest budget audiophiles I&#39;m sure there will be $350 towers that are a bit more accurate, but you will be making trade off&#39;s for that (low end, efficiency, dynamics).  </p>

<p>Another boon for new budget minded HiFi enthusiasts is the efficiency of the EV-15&#39;s.  They rate at 95db, and feel louder than my Forte&#39;s (99db) did in similar sized rooms.  What that translates into overall starting cost is that <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWWDKZ-kydE">they play loud with minimal power</a>.  I have these hooked up to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFoC3TR5rzI">80 watt per channel receiver that is locked in at ¼ volume, and that is being fed audio by my computer that is also typically set at 25%</a>.  The EV-15s will easily put out 65db of continuous sound that peaks at 75-80db with these settings.  I wont try to guess how many watts that translates into but if you can only afford a lower power amp, I have no fear that these will strangle out considerably more volume than 98% of other loudspeakers on the market AT ANY PRICE POINT.  People see a bigger than life speaker, and assume that you need equally bigger than life power source to get it up and running, but in reality the opposite is true.  The physics of a big cabinet and horn loaded drivers mean you need less power to get to the same total output, whatever your preferred SPL is.</p>

<p>EV-15&#39;s can be found for a newbee friendlyish prices, $340 shipped from a big box retailer.  With direct specialty internet sales companies we have access to the best sound money can buy with whatever sound signature your picky little heart can desire.  However, to audition endless speakers you will need to spend an additional $50 or more to ship back your cute little baby bookshelfs, and it only gets more cost prohibitive to audition towers.  If you try a pair of EV-15&#39;s and you think I&#39;m full of crap and EV-15&#39;s are pure garbage, your only out some gas and a drive to return them.  That cuts out another massive barrier for new enthusiast. Trying out just 2 sets of bookshelf&#39;s drives the total cost up to the next echelon of speaker quality.</p>

Side clip finally arrived! Don’t know why leatherman stopped making these! In love with this model, and even better, it’s in completely new unused condition!

Pixel 4 XL here and it's not working either. But messages app isn't targeting Android 11 yet.

I'm using Pulse as my messaging app. They just released an update saying that it will allow bubbles to work, but still nothing. Oh well, hopefully in the next update!

I'm using a Pixel 3, installed the Android 11 beta and somehow lost the bubbles slider in developer settings. I do however have bubbles settings in apps now and the option for individual WhatsApp chats to bubble.
None of this works however. Facebook messenger does and always has worked with bubbles, WhatsApp needs an update to support 11 is all I can assume.

It's almost comforting knowing it not just me, I've been digging through settings and I think I turned conversations off, it says bubbles won't work with conversations, bubbles won't work period. Why is it with every beta update comes the promise that bubbles will work? If they did a disclaimer like "bubbles will work now (maybe, hopefully, who knows -Google), but Google won't be that vague. I figure if this many people are having bubble trouble in beta, Google will know they have to fix it, I'll look forward to the next build, and I think I'll contact them anyway.

I recently sold my JBL FLIP 5 due to the poor connection and audio interruption. Are there any better small portable speakers on the market currently? Any advice would be appreciated!
