I used to use a french press until 6 months ago. Coffee came out good, but not quite like what I've managed to achieve since switching to the Kalita Wave and by extension the 4:6 method. I did try it with the usual v60 as well but I have been able to achieve the same results if not better, with my kalita wave.

[MOD] What have you been brewing this week?/ Coffee bean recommendations

 I've tried adding the bottom disk (inverted) from my French Press to see if that would help prevent the paper filter from blocking up the drain holes, but that didn't make a difference. Not sure what to do as my return window just closed yesterday. Ugh.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but the second half of my brew time stalls considerably. Things flow fine on the first 2 pours but, after that, the brew is super slow (dripping one or two drops at a time). I'm using pre-ground coffee for now (I thought that would eliminate any mistakes I might make as to grind texture). I've seen online that this new model has issues with that so I know it's not just me

Having trouble with stalling

I've been exclusively using the V60 for the past year and while I've made great cups with it, there're times where it just doesn't taste as good as the last, and those times it's driving me nuts.

Can you guys recommend brewers that consistently make great coffee?

Are there any other brewers that can make as high quality of a cup as a V60, but consistently?

I loved making the coffee out of it. It’s easy to use, the coffee tastes great. But the item arrived warped out of shape.

I’d get a grinder, something like a Porlex hand cranked model is fine. For brewing I’d get either a Chemex or Kalita Wave system with the company branded filters. This will allow you to source any beans you want and produces reliably great coffee.

I'm new to coffee, what's something you wish you knew when you started?

Pros: Appearance, quality. Simply elegant, solid, and convenient. Perfect for 2-3 cups of coffee. And the flavor is very good (although I can't say that it's much/any different than my Melitta dripper)

 You have to crush them in a bit, but they'll work just perfectly. Before adding the ground coffee to the paper filter, be sure to saturate the filter with hot water (to remove the undesirable paper filter smell/taste). Makes a huge difference! Enjoy!

Elegant, sturdy, and makes a fine cup of Joe!

Two: if she wants something different, and more of a challenge, get her a pour-over (percolation) brewer like a Hario V60 or a Kalita Wave. These are less forgiving of technique and grind quality and will take her some time to get the hang of. But can produce great cups of coffee.

So Context before hand, my partner has watched James Hoffman on YT for a long time. In the last couple months she has become super passionate about coffee and learning a ton and expermenting to learn and try all she can! It's very very rare for her to find something she loves and wants to throw herself into and become passionate about. I'm so incredibly proud of her for  her doing something for herself purely because she just enjoys it! She makes me so frigging happy and proud of her!

That being said, Christmas is coming and I was chatting with her parents. They are adorable and ask for Christmas lists (we are both 29 and been together for 11 years) and we throughly enjoy Christmases with them! So right now, her supplies are 2 French presses, a great hand grinder,  a ton of different types of beans (she has a could from James' brand coming in soon) to experiment with and try, a scale. And her parents are most likely getting her one of the more expensive grinders she loved in James' review videos.  I'm kinda stuck.  I have other gifts in mind as well outside of her coffee passion,  but I'm having  a hard time thinking of what i could get her to support her and help her with her passion. She works from home so she has no interest in travel mugs or things like that.  Idk why I'm mentally stuck and can't think of anything. I'm not huge in the finer details of making good coffee I just enjoy drinking her coffee (even tho my ibs hates me forever it..lol)

Christmas gift for a coffee newbie?

Draw down is too slow! Will only accommodate up to 400 ml water 24g coffee with a medium-coarse grind. Do not attempt to use automatic drip pre-ground coffee it is too finely ground because 3 holes in bottom of dripper and sidewall angle severely limit draw down speed. That said, if you don’t make volumes over 12-14 ounces (360-420 ml), have a good grinder (not a blade), and don't mind a slow brew time, don't mind proprietary filters then, this dripper makes a good cup of coffee.
