If you're looking for something completely different, try the Boox Nova 3.  It's small enough to be portable and use a notepad and powerful enough to be a real tablet.  You can even watch video on it with sound! Neoreader and the availability of the koreader app means it's also perfectly useable for PDFs too.

I have way too many but honestly most are just taking up space.  I only really use the Pocketbook and the Nova 3 color. Occasionally the Oasis and Voyage come out, and I keep the Kindle Basic in my motorcycle for when I'm stuck waiting at a drive through or there's going to be a lot of standing around waiting.

Onyx isn't the only one, you can look into boyue/bigme/supernote/hisense

Finally got the cash to replace it and decided on the boox nova 3. Purchased today direct from the online store. Amazon has like a $60 markup no matter that seller I found as the nova 3 goes for $500+ CAD on Amazon. The boox online store has them for $330 USD and after taxes and conversion it came to be $440 CAD.

I used to have a Kindle Keyboard, which was my only reader for like 7+ years. Eventually it broke and I started reading on an 8" Asus tablet. That was actually really good (it's got a 4:3 QHD resolution and really good screen), but the backlight was still bothersome. 

Bought a Kindle Paperwhite 4 in early 2019 but still kept switching back and forth between size vs. e-ink, so bought a Boox Nova 2 in 2020 and haven't looked back. 

I really like the Boox. The screen size is perfect and I love the warm light option. Now just waiting for color e-ink to improve in quality. The Kindle sits in a drawer 90% of the time now, though I guess it's nice to have a backup if anything goes wrong with the Boox reader.

I wouldn't mind a 10" reader, but price-wise they're not really worth it to me right now. Maybe in the future though.

I’ve quickly accumulated a collection of ereaders and it happened within a matter of weeks. Kind of ridiculous considering you can only do one thing on them and even then most people only read one or two books at a time. 

It started with trying to find the perfect device but then it evolved to a desire to own more obscure or niche devices. 

Currently I own:

A white Kindle Paperwhite 2015, found it for a cheap price new in box. Use it to read my kindle library and also other kindle freebies. Tall with big bezels and light so blue it’s like you’re reading in the Arctic. 


Nook Glowlight 3, fabulous hardware. Grippy soft touch plastic and satisfying page turn buttons. Lovely warm light that covers the whole 6 inch screen with no dead spots. Janky software. Deleted all my sideloaded books. Has a swipe to unlock screen which I find to be superfluous.


Kobo Clara HD: Great compact size. Maybe I bought a lemon because at the bottom of the screen there’s quite a few dead spots where the light is uneven. I love how it slowly changes the light temperature depending on the time of day. My go to Overdrive/library book reader. 


Also in the Kobo drawer are a 2013 Aura and two minis. Love these little guys. 

Next the red headed step kids of my collection. My AliExpress 4.3 inch reader which is surprisingly capable. Also I have a whole box of 1st and 2nd gen kindles I’m trying to fiddle with. 

So with that being said which one should I buy next? Android boox poke? Or maybe a refurbed voyage?

 I've had about every model of Kindle there is.  This Kobo Mini is a tiny ereader, I am forced to compare it to the Nook Simple Touch and Kindle.  The display on the Mini is very close in quality and appearance to the 2nd gen white Kindle with 5-way button. It has a silvery gray background and has a similar quality of text display

The book is heavy, ditch it or get a lightweight ereader (Kobo Clara is \~160g). You are using gas = you don't need the lighter, just a spark. Get an igniter (MSR Piezo or just tear a piezo lighter and take the 1 g igniter from it).

Best eReader for manga?

Having owned the Kindle (w/Keyboard) for several years, I was starting to look into getting my hands on a small, pocket sized eReader. By chance, the Kobo Mini was just about to release in the US within the week, and my local Best Buy would be receiving them. So I pre-ordered after reading the scant number of reviews and user videos.  The Kobo Mini is fairly pricey at retail, but I will go ahead and say right now that if the price were cheaper (used/refurb/discount) it may become something worth looking at as something to /add/ to your reading materials

 After resuming my session from being in standby mode, the kobo screen will not register any form of touch-communication. I have tried tapping, both with my fingernail and finger tip, sliding with both, on all parts of the kobo, yet the page refuses to turn. But sometimes the mere brush of a sleeve will throw the reader in a loop, and it will jump forward 2-3 pages.  Another issue is that when I resume from standby, sometimes the kobo will back up anywhere from 1-3 pages previous to my position

 So I pre-ordered after reading the scant number of reviews and user videos.  The Kobo Mini is fairly pricey at retail, but I will go ahead and say right now that if the price were cheaper (used/refurb/discount) it may become something worth looking at as something to /add/ to your reading materials.  However, right now I almost feel buyer's remorse for being an early adopter for pocket-sized eReaders. The Kobo Mini has many flaws, which I will try to list out very briefly

 Seriously? Just leave it all out and make this thing thin! - Screen issues: When resuming from sleep, the page first loaded seems unusually pale, moreso on the outer edges. Continuing to flip through the pages resolves this issue. Also, the page numbers in many of my books appear on the side of the screen, overlaying the text. This is also strange

I have a Kobo mini, that still works great and that I love using. But I've been using it less and less because transferring books is annoying and it's just easier to read them on my phone. Only, my phone is not ideal for reading, for many reasons (size, outside, notifications, battery). 
Considering I want a something small and non expensive to read books that mostly come from the library (Libby and pretnumerique), I was thinking getting a Poke 4 lite but I would like the opinion of those a little more up to date then me (ie someone who last bought an e-reader less then 10 years ago...)

Kobo mini upgrade

 I am a sideload-only reader; I do not use the Kobo bookstore at all. I logged into it once to set up the reader (there is no way to set up the reader without either the wifi login or installing Kobo's software on your computer; the ereader is non-functional until you've set up a Kobo account for it), turned off wifi, and haven't touched it since.  I know nothing about the bookstore or its features; this is solely a review of the device, which, in my opinion, is nowhere near as good as the (no longer in production) Sony or Astak readers. It's poor enough that I won't be looking at the Kobo Glo for my next 6" reader

  4) When the battery is running low, the touchscreen is unresponsive. It gets harder to turn pages, and it often jumps ahead an extra page.  5) Default settings are hard to work with - it's set to only fully refresh the screen every 6 pages, which means a gradual dimming of letters and ghosting from the previous screen until the refresh. It's easy to change that to refresh every page (with a warning that this eats more battery--but still almost nothing compared to wifi usage), but you have to know the option exists
