Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook review: More Chromebook for now and later

On a Windows machine, these specs would be a hard pass. But Chrome OS is a lighter load, and I can vouch that the Flex 3’s screen is a bigger limit on multitasking than its horsepower is. I was able to use the laptop for a substantial workload, jumping between dozens of Chrome tabs and some apps, but the experience was cramped enough that I wouldn’t recommend it. 

Second, audio. The balance and volume that these 2W stereo speakers deliver are on par with those of any number of more expensive Chromebooks. They easily beat the Spin 713, which sounds tinny and thin. There are caveats, of course: There’s very little bass, percussion is weak, I heard a bit of distortion at max volume, and you’ll want an external speaker for any crowded setting

 But the Flex is great for video conferences and regular music-listening, and certainly beats what I’ve heard from all kinds of Windows laptops that are over $1,000. 

Scrolling got a bit sluggish when I tried to work on top of a Spotify or YouTube stream, and the transitions between laptop and tablet mode were a bit slower than I would’ve liked. The only task where I ran into real trouble, though, was sorting through a batch of shots in Google Photos (with a couple other apps running on the side). The Flex 3 did get the job done, but it was quite slow. The one Zoom meeting I tried (on top of some other tabs I needed) was also a bad experience — audio randomly cut out a couple times, and video was stuttery throughout

Lenovo Flex 3 Chromebook review: good price, bad screen

 Really, the only difference I experienced in casual testing between the Flex 3 and the Core i7-powered Pixelbook was occasional sluggishness from the Flex 3 with more than a dozen browser tabs open. I don't see this being a drawback unless you plan to connect an external display, since the Flex 3&rsquo;s screen isn't really large enough to accommodate that many tabs comfortably in any case.&nbsp;(See how we test laptops and Chromebooks.)

The Flex 3's main strengths are its above-average build quality, attractive styling, and wallet-friendly price. With a generous range of ports, it should also appeal to people who plan to supplement their Chromebook's internal storage and perhaps connect an external keyboard and mouse. And a 360-degree hinge increases its versatility without adding extra bulk.&nbsp;

 The non-Flex version of the IdeaPad 3 Chromebook is priced similarly, while the Lenovo Chromebook 3 and the Lenovo Chromebook Duet are cheaper. At the other hand of the spectrum is the Acer Chromebook Spin 713, an Editors&rsquo; Choice winner in the $600-plus price range.&nbsp;

The charts show results on two categories of tests. JetStream and WebXPRT are browser-based benchmarks that show how well the Chromebook handles the types of web-based computing tasks that are the bread and butter of Chrome users. Meanwhile, PCMark for Android Work and CrXPRT perform the same types of tasks but in an application downloaded from the Google Play store.&nbsp;

Verdict

Great Affordable Chromebook

 I am used to Macbooks, so this definitely feels like a downgrade to me, but for the price it's a good deal in my opinion! Unfortunately the touchscreen on my Chromebook did not work. It could be the recent Chrome OS update that other reviews have suggested, so I will be returning mine because that was a feature I was most excited about at this price point. Amazon customer service took great care of me with this, supplying an option for a refund or exchange, even when Lenovo didn't answer and eventually dropped my call to get product support for this issue. In the end, I personally will not buy this product for work again
