I need a laptop that has an i5 or i7 cpu, min 8gb ram, 14 or 15" screen (full hd), 256+ SSD. There are many, many laptops with these specs but the most important aspect is that it has ultra durable hinges because the screen gets opened and closed ALOT every day. The last 2 laptops lasted just over a year before the hinges came apart (right out of warranty period on both). I know there are the ultra rugged offerings that are so bulky it looks like it could be run over by a car or dropped from 30 feet and be fine. This still needs to look and feel like a regular modern laptop. Price range is around $1000-$1200 ish. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I am researching which laptop to buy within my budget of around 1400 to 1500 cad. One of my friends suggests Macbook Air m1 which he says is industry leader and around 1340 after taxes under Student Discount. Whereas, my other friend suggests Lenovo Thinkpad series specifically Thinkpad 14s Amd and argues it's much better than Macbook Air and to get unbiased opinion from someone who's used both. So here i am. If anyone has an idea of both these laptops could you please guide me on which one would be better. Thank you so much.

Macbook Air M1 vs Lenovo Thinkpad

Okay, so I'm saving for a laptop and naturally want to run Linux on it. My only problem is that I don't know which brand I should get for the optimal Linux compatibility. I consider all options, and my only constraint is price (up to $750) and as I said, Linux hardware compatibility. Within these constrains, I will list some manifacturers that I'm considering.

- __Dell__
My only problem is that my local computer store does not sell Dell computers. That means shipping costs which impact the value I can get for my money. I could go to another computer store but the first one has the best prices. Linux compatibility should be good if you go with AMD graphics, since they sell laptops with Ubuntu on them.

- __Lenovo__
I was actually going to get an IdeaPad with AMD, since my local computer store has good deals for those at the moment. But then I read about that the newer models are not very upgrade-friendly (as if any laptop nowadays was that). But what pushed me to  consider other options is [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Controversies). I simply don't trust their firmware anymore. However, I have heard that they play well with Linux.

- __ASUS__
I am thinking about ASUS, but most of their lineup is for gamers, and I already have a gaming rig. I could find some "casual" ASUS laptops at my computer store, but they were quite expensive. I also don't know about Linux compatibility, but I suspect it is good like most manifacturers except Microsoft and their sugarbaby HP.

- __Acer__
They mostly sell Chromebooks, which I don't like because they use really slow hardware and rely on software optimization. I have had good experiences with their computers though.

What I'm **not** considering at the moment.

- HP, my experience with their hardware is dreadful, basically M$'s sugarbaby.
- "Pure" Linux laptops like [Purism](https://puri.sm/) and [System76](https://system76.com/), since they are sadly very expensive and shipping costs also limit this option. [Framework](https://frame.work/) only sells to USA and Canada at the moment.

Can you comment with what laptop you're using for Linux? And maybe suggest something different altogether?

My go-to when buying laptops has always been Apple. I have owned quite a few macbooks and all have worked flawlessly. Never had any issues. My surface laptop 3 display cracked for no reason recently, and its out of warranty which means I'll have to pay through the roof to get it fixed or use it as it is. It's barely been 2 years since I got it. Recently checked up on my old 2015 12 inch macbook, and it is still going strong. Although I hate the butterfly keyboard, it has surprisingly never failed me. It still remains the lightest MacBook till date, but build quality is solid (unlike my Surface Laptop 3 which is supposed to be 'premium' but creaks every time I lift it up). The MacBook literally feels like a tank and since its small and light, I used to take it everywhere, throwing it into bags, and onto desks, I have never been gentle with it. My SL3 feels 'fragile' in a way I cant quite put across in words, so I'm always  gentle with it, which is why I hesitate to take it with me whenever I leave the house, which is a shame because I love the keyboard and its display aspect ratio. 

I dont want to rant, but are there any Premium Windows Laptop line-ups that are as reliable and well built as MacBook's? I was looking at the dell XPS lineup thinking they were premium, but even a lot of those face issues with the trackpad and display. I prefer using Windows over MacOS, but if I'm spending $1500+ on a laptop, I NEED it to last me at least 5 years because unlike with phones, I dont like upgrading laptops every year or so.
