I need a laptop that has an i5 or i7 cpu, min 8gb ram, 14 or 15" screen (full hd), 256+ SSD. There are many, many laptops with these specs but the most important aspect is that it has ultra durable hinges because the screen gets opened and closed ALOT every day. The last 2 laptops lasted just over a year before the hinges came apart (right out of warranty period on both). I know there are the ultra rugged offerings that are so bulky it looks like it could be run over by a car or dropped from 30 feet and be fine. This still needs to look and feel like a regular modern laptop. Price range is around $1000-$1200 ish. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Need a laptop with VERY durable hinges please! Suggestions?

 So far, with a couple of days of usage, I'd have to say the reader is hit or miss. It'd read my fingerprint about 33% of the time, and doesn't seem to be able to successfully do it the others. -I haven't found a way within the Lenovo software that would allow me to disable the trackpad when a mouse is plugged in. It's an option in Windows 10, but those using Windows 7 will have to find alternate solutions

I'm a laptop enthusiast who has purchased several dozen used machines on eBay over the years. Some were for me, some family, and some for parts to fix up machines I already owned. I've yet to see any good articles that cover the topic well, so I'd like to share things I've learned and a few recommendations.

First, the best model line to look for is the Dell Latitude and the Lenovo Thinkpad. These specific lineups are the most widely used by businesses. Employees tend to put the computers on a docking station with external monitors, keyboards, and mice which means they are in good physical condition. These models are also designed for easy repair and upgradability. For example, I purchased two Dell latitude e5470's a few years ago (one for me, one for the wife). The keyboard can be swapped in less than 5 minutes, so I replaced mine for the backlit keyboard for $20. My wife dropped her machine and broke the bottom casing, which I replaced in 10 minutes for $15. I've replaced the batteries on both twice for $25 each over the course of 4 years.

Second, these models tend to be purchased in bulk at an auction once a business closes or upgrades their lineup. Other businesses then buy these units and list them in bulk on eBay. For this reason, supply fluctuates greatly. If you don't see a good deal, be patient and look the next day. Sorting the results by "newly listed" is your friend.

Third, look for models around 2-4 years old. This is the standard length of a warranty, and it aligns well with a typical upgrade cycle.

Fourth, the descriptions tend to be generic. It will usually list the model number (t480, 5580, etc) but it usually won't list any of the optional upgrades like thunderbolt or screen resolution. To figure that out and find a good deal, you need to look at the pictures. The typical picture listings will usually include a picture of the side, so look for the iconic lightning bolt logo. The pictures sometimes include the system information page in the BIOS saying the screen resolution. But if the listing doesn't show the resolution, then ask the seller. This is your chance to score a good deal when other buyers ruled it out by the pictures. Don't use filters for specific processors, ports, or screen resolutions; this will hide all of the good deals that actually have these features.

Fifth, If you have a good idea of what you are looking for, identify the specific model number with those features. I like to use this webpage on [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_Latitude) which lists all of the dell latitude models. If I was looking for a 14" 1080p with an 8th gen intel processor, I'd narrow my search to the model numbers 5400, 7490, and 7400.

Sixth, some of the best listings will have the hardrive and ram removed. If you are comfortable installing windows yourself, you can get a better deal by including terms like "No OS" or "No HDD" in your search terms.

Used Laptop Buying Recommendations

 Fundamentally happy with it and would definitely consider buying another one. Solid build quality. I really like the keyboard - it feels high quality and has very good travel distance for a slim laptop. This machine has good performance and sufficient battery life if you're using it for basic office type computing and browsing

  As for Cons: Ranked in order of importance to me, here are the things that bring take it down to four stars: - Trackpad - laggy and annoying. I suppose two work arounds I could try (but haven't) are 1) disable the delivered drivers and accept less functionality with a generic driver to see if responsiveness and accuracy improves. 2) get a mouse. I might give 1) a try but I don't like using a mouse, so for me 2) isn't a good work around

Okay, so I'm saving for a laptop and naturally want to run Linux on it. My only problem is that I don't know which brand I should get for the optimal Linux compatibility. I consider all options, and my only constraint is price (up to $750) and as I said, Linux hardware compatibility. Within these constrains, I will list some manifacturers that I'm considering.

My only problem is that my local computer store does not sell Dell computers. That means shipping costs which impact the value I can get for my money. I could go to another computer store but the first one has the best prices. Linux compatibility should be good if you go with AMD graphics, since they sell laptops with Ubuntu on them.

I was actually going to get an IdeaPad with AMD, since my local computer store has good deals for those at the moment. But then I read about that the newer models are not very upgrade-friendly (as if any laptop nowadays was that). But what pushed me to  consider other options is [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Controversies). I simply don't trust their firmware anymore. However, I have heard that they play well with Linux.

I also don't know about Linux compatibility, but I suspect it is good like most manifacturers except Microsoft and their sugarbaby HP.

They mostly sell Chromebooks, which I don't like because they use really slow hardware and rely on software optimization. I have had good experiences with their computers though.

 I didn't received what I ordered. I received a Lenovo Thinkpad T460s instead of the T460 I ordered. The battery doesn't last too long comparing to what I saw on the description. I don't have any problem with the other one I received but I would require another battery

I've had good luck with both Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad in that price range. Depending on where you are, Latitude might be slightly better value for money, since used ThinkPads are more talked about and popular.
