74 by 8.55 inches (HWD) and weighs 2.49 pounds. Given the added half-pound or so on the ThinkPad T480s, you lose out on the "Wow, this thing is so light!" rush that you feel when you pick up the X1 Carbon

 Specifically: There just isn't enough pricing daylight between it and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon to justify lugging the extra half-pound of the ThinkPad T480s, unless you rely on wired Ethernet and absolutely refuse to pack a dongle. As a result, we see a ThinkPad T480s as an ideal buy only after that killjoy in accounting has quashed your request for a ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

The ThinkPad T480s failed to nail frame rates higher than 30 frames per second, the minimum threshold for enjoyable gaming, even on medium-quality tests at 1,366 by 768. With its slightly superior Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics, the MacBook Pro delivered better frame rates, but that added graphics oomph didn't translate into better times on photo- and video-editing trials. 

Lenovo ThinkPad T480s Review

Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K.

My Lenovo Thinkpad from nearly a decade ago hasn't been working too well for me lately, sometimes struggling with video calls and buffering videos. Also, it's graphics card isn't good enough to run a few games I'd like to play (Civ 6, Ori & the Blind Forest, Journey). Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K

Agreed. KEyboard takes a bit to get used to (had a lenovo t480s before) and a thing i recommend is that you disable the cpu boost in windows 10. The fan noise and heat gets sweet and you just loose 15% cpu power.

The more I use it the more I fall in love.  I'm on vacation in florida and I have this thing on my lap and it's nice and comfortable, browsing the web, watching youtube videos and checking out reddit.  I can't believe a machine as powerful as this makes a great sit and entertain laptop without taking a toll on your legs.  No heat issues, nothing! 

I did however find one thing I'm quite jealous of. I purchased my father a Surface Laptop Go 128/8gb model to replace his shitty chromebook and the machine is sexy as hell, but that aside the Keyboard on that thing feels SOOOO good.  Don't get me wrong I love the Razer keyboard and I can type super fast on it but the tactility on the Surface Laptop Go is just on another level.  That would be my one recommendation to Razer for their next series of laptops.

Okay, so I'm saving for a laptop and naturally want to run Linux on it. My only problem is that I don't know which brand I should get for the optimal Linux compatibility. I consider all options, and my only constraint is price (up to $750) and as I said, Linux hardware compatibility. Within these constrains, I will list some manifacturers that I'm considering.

- __Dell__
My only problem is that my local computer store does not sell Dell computers. That means shipping costs which impact the value I can get for my money. I could go to another computer store but the first one has the best prices. Linux compatibility should be good if you go with AMD graphics, since they sell laptops with Ubuntu on them.

- __Lenovo__
I was actually going to get an IdeaPad with AMD, since my local computer store has good deals for those at the moment. But then I read about that the newer models are not very upgrade-friendly (as if any laptop nowadays was that). But what pushed me to  consider other options is [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo#Controversies). I simply don't trust their firmware anymore. However, I have heard that they play well with Linux.

I am thinking about ASUS, but most of their lineup is for gamers, and I already have a gaming rig. I could find some "casual" ASUS laptops at my computer store, but they were quite expensive. I also don't know about Linux compatibility, but I suspect it is good like most manifacturers except Microsoft and their sugarbaby HP.

They mostly sell Chromebooks, which I don't like because they use really slow hardware and rely on software optimization. I have had good experiences with their computers though.

What I'm **not** considering at the moment.

What laptop brand should I get?

Looking for something thin and lightweight (12 to 14 inch screen) with a nice sized keyboard (a bit afraid on 11inch models as they might be a bit too narrow for big hands?) under 500usd. Almost purchased a Pinebook Pro till I saw too many folks selling used ones (and some negative feedback about performance on a few youtube reviews).

Not expecting great performance, but at least being able to use gmail on a browser and watching youtube videos without feeling frustrated about browser loading times or really choppy video. I basically need just xterms and chrome (99% of the time) running on XFCE, using an encrypted filesystem. Something light and thin, preferably fan-less.

I also considered a chromebook but it seems getting linux on top of chromeOS always requires a \*lot\* of effort and end result might not be satisfactory. If anyone has a super easy-to-install linux chromebook recommendation i will also take (something like changing a BIOS setting and then booting from USB without having to go through a lot of hoops). I think a PC will be an easier/safer option but i am open to a chromebook one.
