Through the advise of this forum, I have decided to go with a lightweight & portable X1 Carbon Gen 10. However, I have also seen alot of reviews around poor thermals and battery life and it seems that this is mostly attributed to the P-series processor.

My girlfriend is looking to buy a laptop under $2k and asked me for some help finding one.


Here are some of the priorities she has:

1. Something high quality that will last! This is the most important. She doesn't want anything finnicy, or anything that won't last a while, she wants to take care of this thing and for it to last her a good while.

2. Cool features. She is going to be working for her masters and P.h.D so if there's a good laptop that you'd especially suggest for students for whatever reason, or for special features, that would be ideal!

3. Power for minecraft/minecraft mods. This is less important but having this option is nice to her. A good all around laptop is what she's looking for but power for gaming is something she wouldn't mind.

She is ideally aiming at spending $1.5k but is willing to go up to $2.5k if something is really worth it.

Best under $2000

 Edit - this is the model I am using: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Intel Core i7 10th Gen 14-inch Wide Quad HD IPS Thin and Light Laptop (16GB RAM / 512GB SSD/ Windows 10 Professional/ Black/ 1.09Kg), 20R1S05400. iPad is a poor replacement- High consumption focus, tough to create stuff.

I'm trying to decide on whether to pull the trigger on black friday deals. Besides your smartphone, what computing device do you prefer for your personal life, and what devices are you looking at to purchase?  Some of the options I'm thinking:

**Thinkpad X13 / T14 with AMD 4xxx series:**  
The new AMD ryzen chips crush spreadsheets and are extremely snappy. I'm so naturally inclined to the excel keyboard shortcuts in Wintel that I'm willing to stay within that ecosystem simply because I'm more familiar and and efficient.  Tanky and understated.  USB4 is just around the corner, and Apple's M1 ARM silicon may render x86 chips a thing of the past.

**Apple M1 Macbooks:**  
The new M1 ARM chip Macbook Airs are also supremely attractive with their supposed 18 hour battery life.  But from what I understand, using Excel on Mac is less than optimal, occasionally buggy user experience.  I like using spreadsheets for planning my personal life so this is a concern.

**iPad:**   
Goes without saying, simple, refined, excellent value but not truly a do-it-all device when compared to a traditional laptop.

What's your solution for separating work &amp; life computing, and what devices would you consider and why?

MYR 3000 - 4000,(flexible) over budget is okay if it's worth it, but I'd rather use the money on other stuff (extra 1000)

Ideally I'd like something that will last me a long time. Looks don't matter. Performance is kinda important since I will be mainly drawing on it with big boy programs. I read that 8GB of ram and a decent processer is enough, but with my budget I could probably afford 16gb of ram. Long Battery life is nice, but not that important.

Not at all. A brick is fine. Just has to resemble a laptop somewhat.

I found a local shop near me selling a refurbished razer blade pro 17 i7-4720HQ 16GB 128Gb ssd 500gb hdd 4gb gtx960m 17" dual screen full hd for roughly MYR 3800, which seems great for the specs and price, but I have no idea about razer's build quality, and I feel like I'm over valuing it because it has a cool gimmick with the tiny screen on the keyboard.

I would prefer to avoid touch screens as I feel they usually just add unnecessary costs and dangers, and because I will be drawing using an external device anyways. 

I honestly wouldn't mind getting something from Microsoft's surface line, if it wasn't for the reviews saying that it doesn't last and has bad repairability.

As a guideline, I have been looking at the new XPS13 and XPS15 (especially the 15, but with integrated graphics probably), the ROG Zephyrus G14/G15 (a bit too expensive) and the HP Omen 15 (very very inclined towards this one, because it has pretty much everything I want and it's cheaper than the previous options). The main issue I am facing is I feel any of these options is very overkill for my needs (I probably don't need a dedicated GPU, but in the case of the Omen I feel like it's a great bonus). Most "regular" laptops around 800-1000€ I am not very interested in normally because the feel "cheap", but I am always reluctant to pay for the more premium stuff... Most days I actually feel like an M1 Macbook Air is my best choice, with the exception of dual booting Linux.
