what are the best cost benefit laptops for working with computational modeling and 3D modeling?

I need a laptop that has an i5 or i7 cpu, min 8gb ram, 14 or 15" screen (full hd), 256+ SSD. There are many, many laptops with these specs but the most important aspect is that it has ultra durable hinges because the screen gets opened and closed ALOT every day. The last 2 laptops lasted just over a year before the hinges came apart (right out of warranty period on both). I know there are the ultra rugged offerings that are so bulky it looks like it could be run over by a car or dropped from 30 feet and be fine. This still needs to look and feel like a regular modern laptop. Price range is around $1000-$1200 ish. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Need a laptop with VERY durable hinges please! Suggestions?

I’m trying to get back into writing after a long hiatus but my laptop is a big ol’ gaming one that I don’t enjoy writing with, so I’m in the market for something smaller and lighter that I can comfortable write with on my lap on the couch and around the house. 

I’ve decided that a Chromebook seems like the best bet because I need like two things out this laptop: word processing and web browsing. I like Docs and Chromebooks are ultra cheap compared to Windows and Mac laptops, so it seems logical to get one. I am open to any suggestions for Windows/Mac though!

The main things I’m concerned about though are physical things. I’d like a smaller screen (10-13in) because I want this thing to be ultra portable. I want to be able to throw it in any bag and take it with me wherever, and if I’m just carrying it I’d like it to be as light and thin as possible so it’s comfortable to just hold in one arm. I assume a smaller screen is just necessary to that. 

Outside of that I’m sadly concerned with aesthetics lol. I like metal, not plastic, or at least a premium plastic feel. I’d love for it to have a great keyboard so it feels nice to type on. 

I love the look of the Pixelbook Go but I can’t justify spending that much more just for a laptop to write with and browse the web. I love the size and idea of a Lenovo Duet, but I need that clamshell keyboard so I can write on my lap and I for sure cannot do that with its keyboard and kickstand.

So: light, thin, premium-ish feel, and small laptop under $500 that’s easily portable and writes well on my lap. Any recommendations?

Cheap (under $500), light and ultra portable Chromebook for a writer?

 Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K.

My Lenovo Thinkpad from nearly a decade ago hasn't been working too well for me lately, sometimes struggling with video calls and buffering videos. Also, it's graphics card isn't good enough to run a few games I'd like to play (Civ 6, Ori & the Blind Forest, Journey). Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K

 What im looking for is a laptop with a non-chicklet style keyboard but more recent specs. There are some really heavy duty gaming laptops that just put a full on cherry MX keyboard in there, however they're much too bulky and waaaay over what im willing or able to pay (MSI GT83, acer predator 21X).

For me I want a System76 designed laptop based around an Apple Silicon SoC, running elementaryOS 6. Please, the sky is the limit here, run wild!
