In the past, when the 13" macbooks were powered by i5s with intel integrated graphics, there was a pretty solid reason for even normal users to want to bump up to things like the 15/16" pro models. You could reasonably overpower the 13" specs and need that extra power/speed/memory/gpu

But now the M1 13" is so damn good that I don't think I'd have a real reason to bump from it up to a 14" or 16" pro. Its "enough" for even what I would throw at it as someone who would call themselves a power user.

Yeah I cannot justify laying out 2k for the 14”. I mean I’m not surprised with the chip shortages and this still being Apple but I’m gonna hold off my upgrade until it’s on sale at other retailers at closer to the 1800 mark I was optimistically expecting.

Unpopular opinions time:

I quite like the look of the notch, doing a like for like configuration against a Surface shows the pricing is pretty similar, these are Pro devices so more ports and a bit of thickness is fine, I’ll miss the Touch Bar (seriously, I loved it for presentations), and these laptops really aren’t for the vast majority of people, the 2020 MBA and MBP are there for that (in fact just a bog standard iPad Air with a Smart Keyboard is actually more computing device than most people need). The Pro and Max chips were nice, and the price isn’t that expensive when you consider that the sort of person who will used a maxed out one is probably buying it as a business item and it will return the investment over time in hours saved etc.

The 3rd Gen Airpods look nice, but I can’t figure out from the website (might be looking in the wrong place) if their wireless charging is MagSafe only or is also Qi like the previous charging case version.

The Apple Music Voice sub looks pants, many of those playlists (or similar) are already available on AM, not sure it needed a whole Zane Lowe section to tell us that Siri can play music for different moods… The name is also confusing - presumably it’s for having Apple Music on a HomePod or Watch without an attached device with a screen, like an iPhone? Why not just call it Apple Music Essentials or something? The Siri angle is really confusing.

HomePod Mini was disappointing - where’s my Product(Red) version, Tim? Also I’ve gone off the Mini - the sound is great but it’s literally the only device out of dozens of wifi enabled devices in my house that doesn’t work fully on the Asus Zen Mesh system, and it’s annoying me no end. Homekit works through it, but it cannot access Apple Music at all and it can’t update itself. It’s been raised with you multiple times, Apple; fix your device *before* offering it in a different colour. An orange device that doesn’t work properly is the same as my white device that doesn’t work properly - somehow inferior to a 3rd gen echo dot alarm clock (which can also play Apple Music…).

I like the form factor of the 14 inch, and the base M1 Pro SoC is enough for me, but do I stay with 16gb ram or go to 32? Ideally this lasts me 5+ years.

The model I’d want is $3100. Per usual, memory and storage upgrades are insanely priced. I’m thinking that I might wait for the Air to get a design update, as the M1 Pro is probably overkill for me in 95% of scenarios. Glad to see the MBP become “pro” again, though.

Apple's "Unleashed" | Post-Event Megathread

For one, the GP66 is noticeably thinner — it’s 0.92 inches thick, while its predecessor was 1.08 inches thick. There’s also a new hinge design, which leaves less visible space between the display and the keyboard deck and is meant to make the clamshell easier to open with one hand

The GP66 Leopard is a revamp of the 2019 GP65 Leopard. In addition to the RTX 3070, MSI made at least one other major change: its design. The changes are subtle, but they add up to a machine that looks a bit more professional and a bit less gamer-y. 

 I never heard the fans during my regular multitasking, but there was sometimes an annoying coil whine that swapping to the Silent Fan profile didn’t always eliminate. 

Step-up performance at the right price

What is your view on the looks of gaming laptops?

For me, I find it really sad that so many well cooled an potent machines have this edgy glowing rbg overloaded design that seems to be catering 15 year olds.

Thats the reason I own a Razer Blade 15 Advanced with an RTX 2080. Its a real powerhous, and looks sleak and (except for the glowing logo) looks totally normal and premium.

So many other machines rock powerful hardware, but manage to look cheap and its a pity really.

"Gaming Laptops" mostly look dumb. A discussion

I was looking for a decent windows laptop to replace my MacBook Pro since I need a windows laptop for work. I saw this and it seemed like a great deal so I bought it.

Are either of these laptops a good deal?

Just took delivery of my  L5Pro 3070 from Walmart today and broke it open to try out just now and wow... I totally understand why folks are going crazy over this laptop... 

The first impressions are SUPER strong on this one. 

The screen... Super sharp, colors look punchy, vibrant and accurate. The 16:10 ratio looked amazing throwing up CNN already! 

Threw up a YouTube music video, Ed Sheerans Bad Habits, and damn!! The speakers are way better than I had expected!! Very loud and expansive , treble was sharp and clear, and a good amount of bass too! 

And the biggest kicker. I was expecting this laptop to be bulky and clunky ,at least from the videos. Now actually having one in my hands, the chassis is surprisingly sleek and not as heavy as I thought! The edges are very refined and sharp, a far cry from for instance the G15 laptops from Dell which look crude and super plasticky in comparison! 

It's actually pretty chic looking for a laptop, not too thick at all and the weight is super manageable! 

Keyboard and track pad were excellent overall. 

I am very impressed by this laptop so far and I haven't even threw up a game to play yet :) 

Guys.. If this is how good the L5Pro is, I can't imagine how great the Legion 7 which is supposedly an even more premium version of this laptop would be :)!

I now understand the Legion 5 Pro hype...

Msi gp66 is on premium side of 3060, but some benchmark show that it perform better than another 3060 laptop. Also the msi gp66 11ue have 1440p 165hz panel too

I have a 16” 2019 Macbook Pro with an i7, 5300m, and 16gb. I bought it for web development and music production on the side but after no luck in the industry i’m joining the airforce as a aerospace propulsion apprentice. 

i thought about getting a steam deck to supplement the macbook but the more i think about it the more a gaming laptop makes sense. 

I have a gaming tower and i’d like to get close to its performance for under 2 grand if possible. 
The specs are an Ryzen 7 2700x, RTX 2080, 32gb Ram. 

Portability isn’t a huge concern but of course a nice form factor is nice but i’d rather have performance with good thermals. 

I plan on mainly using it for deployments, traveling, music production, gaming, and emulators for PS2 and later systems.

I like the legion but i feel like i don’t need a 4k display i’d be fine with a 1440p display.

I like the Zephyrus but the 1080p display and soldered ram is something i don’t like.

The omen 17 at costco looks good but i can’t find if the ram is soldered and i’m concerned about intel thermals. Though i’ve heard intel is better for emulators but Ryzen has made huge strides? in single core performance.

Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Question: why do people here always recommend ryzen CPUs over intel CPUs when intel offers better gaming performance? I know ryzens offer slightly better performance in other areas but 99% of the time I see people gloss over the performance loss in games compared to intel.
