 So I wanted to do this simple with no processing what's over, so you get to hear the true sound of the MXL 990, and so it takes the pressure off needing to use your mics that you normally use in your studio that are kept, you know, very protected. So you could throw these outside and not worry about it if the wind gets to it or using it by the ocean. Relatively low risk. If something happens to it, you could easily replace it

 I'm not in a treated room, so you're probably hearing a little of the room noise as well, and I'm getting the audio straight into my iPhone and just pressing record, so I have it going into a mixer board, and my mixer board has a USB out. Then the USB is just going into adapter that then is going into my iPhone. Why I'm never using my expensive mics again! MXL 990 Review

So this is actually for dictation purposes and not podcasting, however, answers should be the same. I have a Blue Yeti right now which works great but only when the room is quiet. I often have to dictate if people are over or if there's significant background noise, and the Yeti just goes to shit in this scenario as expected. I have to switch to a headset in those cases.

So, I need to sell my Yeti and get a dynamic mic. Not interested in an interface so need an XLR/USB or a USB mic. It's on a boom arm so no karaoke-type looking microphones (not actually sure what that form factor is called but I mean the regular ice cream cone one like the SM58)

I'm mostly looking at the Shure MV7 vs the Samson Q9U now. Both seem like they would be totally fine for my purposes. Which would have better off-axis/background noise rejection? And what other mics should I look at? Ideally older models that are more available on the used market to save money. Budget would be up to MV7 new price so I guess $250. But would prefer to buy used. Maximum quality isn't super important, as long as it sounds good enough and has great background noise rejection.

 For those working out of the home studio spend at least $300 in soundproofing getting good acoustic foam bass traps for the corners to really soundproof your recording space. But that isn't enough! The other must have is a microphone that has low self noise. I happen to know for a fact this microphone has a high self noise rate. If you are someone looking to record audio books or medical narration for example that is a real problem considering those don't have music so you only hear voice and voice only

 This mic does not. A good rule of thumb is if the advertisement for the microphone doesn't mention low self noise the mic likely doesn't have it.  It offers zero shock absorption, so you're going to have to be careful with bumping your microphone stand or bumping your desk. So here's a quick look at the specification sheet, and as you can tell, it has a frequency response of 30 hertz to 20 kilohertz, which is pretty good in my eyes, and it also has a cardioid polar pattern. Here's a quick look at the visualization of the frequency response and the polar pattern. Okay, so now I'm just going to go ahead and spin the microphone around to determine what the actual polar pattern is, and how the microphone's frequency response changes as we move into different orientations around the microphone's capsule

 So in the box, you're obviously going to get the microphone. You get this cheap little microphone mount. Unfortunately, it does not come with a microphone stand adapter, so if you're hooking it up to a boom arm, make sure you have the correct adapter, which would be a 5 eighths to 3 eighths inch. As I already showed you, it comes with this nice padded carrying case, then it comes with a bunch of documentation, as well as a 1-year warranty

 Now I'm about two feet away from the MXL-990. Now I'm about four feet away from the MXL-990. I'm sick of smiling, and so is my jaw. Can't you see my front is crumbling down? So I hate to keep saying it, but once again, I think this is a rather nice microphone

MXL-990 XLR Condenser Mic Review / Test

MXL 990 is very good for the price. If you can find the 990/991 combo you can mic the vocals and guitar separately.

Condenser Mic for Female Vocals and Acoustic Guitar under $150

 I would recommend spending a little more for a better "budget" vocal mic (Audio Technica AT 2035 or Avantone CK-6). Both the AT 2035 and CK-6 provide a better balance in frequencies compared to the MXL-990 and also provide a -10db pad cut (on upper frequencies) and LF cut switches providing a bit more flexibility. If you simply don't want to spend the xtra $50-$75 then the MXL will serve your basic intro needs.

It is a decent mic for the money. If your focus is vocal recording, it is a little thin but could be bumped up in post. I would recommend spending a little more for a better "budget" vocal mic (Audio Technica AT 2035 or Avantone CK-6). Good but not great.

 I guess that bar is getting just continually a little bit higher. But despite the somewhat nitpicky nature of this review, I do want to start off by saying, this is a very good mic. I think it's better than 90% of the offerings in this price range, and I prefer it to many of the competitors like the AT2020 or the Samson C01, maybe the Behringer B1. So bear that in mind, while I am pretty critical of this microphone, I think it's more based on the fact that I've seen so many glowing reviews of this mic

 That's the thing I wanted to do with this review. I saw so many reviews of this microphone just talking about how it's the perfect alternative to even more expensive microphones, and I just don't think that's true. It's a more honest review of this microphone. It's a more critical review of this microphone, but it's still a good microphone

 When we look at the 103 frequency response, we see this dead flat sort of plateau in the high end. In my opinion, this dead straight shelf, when combined with a really beautiful flat control of the mid-range, that's kind of the Neumann tone if you could dilute it down to a frequency response curve. In this aspect, the MXL990 begins to fall short, so the presence boost is noticeably less shelf-like, meaning there isn't this sort of consistent, almost compressive quality to the high end. It's sort of what you would expect from a mildly bright, mildly mid-range focused microphone

 Perhaps one of the reasons that this microphone is held in such high regard are its subtle allusions to a microphone much more expensive than itself, that being the Neumann TLM103. The silver, greenish, champagne hue of this microphone harkens back to vintage Neumanns. Its form factor is very reminiscent of a TLM103, and it's not uncommon to see in the comments, or in the Discord, which you should go join, that this is the budget TLM103. You know, in this microphone's marketing, when you go on the website, there's a lot of buzzwords that they like to throw around to make it sound fancy

MXL 990 - This Mic is a Bit Overrated (Budget Microphone Review)

Neither the MXL 990 or the 991 are as good of a mic as your sm57. I would return those and look for a used LDC with multiple polar patterns.

Just ordered a mxl 990, a mxl991, a focusrite 18i8 3rd gen , 2 mic stands, 2 10ft xlr cables and a 2ft xlr to go with the sm57 I have into my Mac. If I can’t get a decent guitar tone after this I’m going to be pissed hahaha

 I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to build on their studio with a tight budget.  Pros: -Very low price for the quality -Very nice looking mic with a good case -Shock mount does what it's supposed to do.  Cons: - A bit muddy on the sound  If anyone has questions feel free to ask!  With a little work you can really make this mic shine. I use it mainly to record hiphop vocals and it easily picks up all the little nuances in my voice. It is really sensitive and when it is on in my room I can hear the mic picking up my mouse clicks when it is on and I am monitoring myself.  It isn't the best sounding mic on the market but for the price it does a great job

If you have been using a computer microphone for all of your projects this is going to be like a whole different world to you.  The mic clip it comes with attaches easily to most mic stands and the shock mount it comes with not only looks cool but is effective in preventing vibrations on the actual mic

 The case that comes with it is a good place to store your mic when it isn't in use.  Overall for this price you can't say too many bad things about it. I agree with some of the other reviewers saying it sounds a little muddy but with a little work you can make it sound really nice. I was iffy buying this mic at first but ever since I got it I have never regretted it

MXL 990 Review

 The way I record my acoustic guitars is using my Samson CO2 pencil condenser microphone in an AB position following the three-to-one rule. Then I place my MXL directly in the middle of my guitar where the fretboard meets the body of the guitar in order to get the nice low reproduction from the body of the guitar and then the natural highs from the left hand of my guitar. Now I'm going to go ahead and demo only using the MXL-990 so you could see exactly what I'm talking about. So so so Saving the best for last, this microphone is priced at $70

 What you are currently hearing is the MXL-990 about a foot and a half away from me and as you can hear it sounds super crisp with a tight low end. Some of the specs this microphone has is the frequency response as low as 30 hertz to as high as 20 kilohertz, a max sound pressure level of 130 decibels. This microphone has a cardioid polar pattern which means it picks up the sound directly in front of the microphone and this microphone is a condenser microphone which requires plus 48 volts or phantom power in order to use it. This microphone has a built-in FET preamp which gives you a nice silky high end with a solid low and mid-range reproduction

 You get great quality audio for just $70. This is a microphone to definitely have in your microphone collection.
