Edit: The UA 24 is definitely carry-on compliant but not necessarily as a personal item.

Since you're considering the MR 2-day Assault, might I suggest the [Urban Assault Based on your use-case, it might work better, and is more low-key. Holds a 15" laptop (and several tablets if you want - I suspect the 13" MacBook could also fit in the tablet pocket in the laptop area) and it's just under the volume of the 2-day. If you don't need all the MOLLE on the outside of the bag, the Urban Assault could be more your style.

Check out Mystery Ranch. Something like the Urban Assault would work, or they have some other aesthetically different bags if you don’t like that. But most have mesh backs and really comfortable straps.

Bag has been working well for daily trips to the office, however the water bottle pocket design is terrible. At best it will hold a standard 16oz plastic water bottle. No way your getting a Nalgene in there without a fight. 5 starts if this is fixed.
