Even at $599.99, which is the current sale price on the company's site, the D8 is just too expensive for what Neato calls its entry-level smart robot vacuum. In this price range, I much prefer the $599 Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL R101AE, our Editors' Choice winner, which also offers strong suction power, rarely gets stuck, has a large dustbin in its base station that only needs to be emptied about once a month, and supports targeted area cleaning so you can send it straight to specific areas on demand

Unfortunately, this vacuum's battery life is relatively short; you can only expect a maximum of roughly 70 minutes of runtime before it has to return to its docking station to recharge, which is less than half the iRobot's maximum battery life. Get the iRobot if you want a vacuum that lasts longer on a charge and does a better job of maneuvering itself around obstacles, but consider the Neato if you want to spend less without sacrificing too much in the way of pet hair cleaning performance.

The Neato D8 is a versatile robot vacuum. It delivers exceptional performance on bare floors and clears a good amount of debris on high-pile carpet. It feels impressively well-built, has a broad suite of navigation features, and is decently easy to maintain. Unfortunately, it has somewhat high recurring costs and can struggle with sucking up fine debris on carpeted floors.

While it struggles a little more with clearing very fine debris on high-pile carpet, it easily cleans pet hair and a good amount of larger material on this surface type.
