Nikon z7 with the 70-200 2.8S. Such a good combo this is full autofocus set to -5 and i tapped the screen to do the focus pull. So cool to be able to do it with AF

Tried to shoot the eclipse got this instead.

  I'm not saying this is a bad camera and I haven't compared it to other mirrorless systems. I can only say that I wasn't impressed and, for the price of the body and the lenses with what seems like a drop in Nikon quality, I just don't see it as worth it anymore. I think Nikon has been making a lot of bad moves over the past few years and I'm really losing confidence in investing so much money into them.  Mirrorless IS the future and I would love to jump in, Sadly for the cost of entry to the quality of the product I think I'm going to return this and stick with my DSLR until it's no longer working, but by then will Nikon even still be around?

 With the rest of the money I would suggest that you buy some nice new Z glass like 24-70 mm f/2.8 and 40 mm f/2.

If you use new Z lenses you won't hear any focus noise since they are so quite, and you can also program the focus ring on the lens for other actions such as changing the ISO. If I were you I would get Nikon Z6 instead because it's cheaper than Z6 II / Z7 II and it's great photo/video hybrid. With the rest of the money I would suggest that you buy some nice new Z glass like 24-70 mm f/2.8 and 40 mm f/2

Yesterday I made a post asking for lens reccomendations for the new D850 I have been saving for. I recieved many great comments, but only one or 2 comments were about DSLR lenses. The majority of redditors who commented reccomended that I invest in a mirrorless camera such as the Z7II, mostly because I intend to use the camera for a Youtube channel in addition to photography. Several great points were made, including that DSLR's like the D850 have trouble auto focusing when shooting video. Based on your feedback, I am seriously re-thinking my purchase and considering going mirrorless. I know very little about mirrorless cameras. To me they seem like a modern, more expensive version of the old point-and-shoot digital cameras that were popular in the early 2000's. Ok sorry that was mean lol. But for real, there are a couple things about mirrorless cameras that make me hesitant to switch. One is the EVF. I can't imagine it looks as clear and acurate as OVF. The second is battery life. You don't get as much juice as a DSLR. But the reasons I want to switch outweigh the cons. They're smaller and lighter, better video quality, low light and high frame rate capabilities, the list goes on. 

My questions to any of you who switched from DSLR to mirrorless: How was it adjusting to the change? How long did it take you to get used to the EVF and do you like it better than OVF? Do you like mirrorless enough you'd never go back? Or do you still love both? I'm not trying to start a debate, just looking for some serious advice before I spend $3,000 on a Z7II. I appreciate your feedback and I love how redditors in this sub point out things I forget to ask. Thank you all and either way I can't wait to own a Nikon!

<p>Edit: Why ask for advice if you&#39;re not going to take it? The fine people in this sub are quite knowledgeable and I have learned more from your comments than I had from any Youtube channel. I have decided to scrap the D850 in favor of a Z6. It is currently in my cart on B&amp;H, as is the Z 24-70mm f4. Why buy in to a dying breed? I had no idea Nikon isn&#39;t making DSLR&#39;s anymore. You all gave me a ton of reasons why the decision to go mirrorless is a no-brainer. Thank you for your help :)</p>

Did I make a mistake by not buying Nikon Z7ii instead? Convince me R5 is better please

 I tossed out plenty of shots those first few days. But then, voila, things of beauty started to happen.  I started out with the Z7II and the 24-200mm zoom, since I usually shoot on the run, not in a studio. Comparing the new zoom to the 28-300mm that I was using on the D750, the new Z lens is very sharp and fun to use

I had to think twice about how much tele reach I might lose with 200mm vs 300mm, but take a close look and as far as field of view goes, these two lenses are actually pretty close. You need to look at more than a few numbers to understand why

  Now after about 2 months with the camera I am very happy with the purchase and would recommend that anyone looking for an excellent mirrorless interchangeable lens camera take a close look at the Z7 II. Best if you can see one in person - it is more compact than you might be expecting. Beyond the camera itself, the new Z mount lenses also appear to be a noticeable step forward, especially in sharpness, which the Z7 II can fully utilize. The larger Z mount is making that possible

 Looking across brands, many of the other comparison points are so close that they are barely differentiating. For me, looking at various things like color rendition, sharpness / image stabilization, grain/noise, dynamic range and low light capability, the Z7 II just seemed to my eyes to be able to produce better looking images.  Some of the other features really only became meaningful once I had the camera in my hands. The EVF has much more information available than typical DSLR optical viewfinders, the autofocus is scary fast, the focus tracking is a vast improvement, especially useful with moving targets like birds and people

Everything I had hoped for as an upgrade from my D750 and D810

Someone messaged me out of the blue on Reddit the other day to tell me that if I'm upgrading I should buy a Sony mirrorless because 'mirrorless is the future'. 

I understand that Nikon is shifting to mirrorless tech and that the engineering in the new Z lenses is top of the line. However, I currently have a D500 that I bought used for $1000. Are there mirrorless options that have as much control and capabilities for the same or similar price right now? Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but it seems like we are a few years away from the utility cost of mirrorless matching currently available DSLR's, even if DSLR's are going to become obsolete at some point. 

Just something I was thinking about and I'm curious to see what all of your thoughts are. Thanks!

in your opinion, do any of Nikon's mirrorless lineup exceed the capabilities of a similarly priced DSLR?

 Even better with their Z S lenses, in fact, outright beating other brand lenses and other cameras, even some do not want to admit that. They make beautiful and professionally done pictures or videos.

 FTZ adapter unlocked a few lenses to hundreds of lenses instead of just Nikkor Z and other Nikkor lenses (F) and other different brands of lenses. Highly recommended. Even better with their Z S lenses, in fact, outright beating other brand lenses and other cameras, even some do not want to admit that. They make beautiful and professionally done pictures or videos

One of the best all-around professional camera.

I shoot Nikon  (DSLR still haven't yet jumped to Mirrorless), started on Canon, Cousin shoots Canon Mirrorless, and best friend Shoots Nikon Mirrorless. Nikon looks to me to be a little better value across the board. The difference between Nikon, Sony and Canon in terms of the AF systems are effectively zero now the Z6/Z7 were noticeably behind but the Z6II/Z7II/Z9 are on par with or ahead of Sony/Canon.

If you ever switched between the two I'd like your input.  


I got a Nikon D600 that I very much still love and works well (I barely feel the need to upgrade, but I've been thinking about expanding my glass and getting a newer body like D850). My primes are 35mm Sgima Art 1.4, 50mm Nikon 1.8, 85mm Nikon 1.8. Also have the stock 24-85mm zoom but barely touch it; 35 and 85 are my go to lenses.   


I'm not heavily invested in glass so, after a few good years of shooting, I'm wondering if I should switch to Canon. Here's my reasons: 1) the ergonomics and viewfinder feel better, when looking through I feel like I get a better connection with the other side (tried a 5D mk4 in the shop) 2) I want to do indie film-making, and evolve to actual cine cameras in the long run, and I want to use blackmagic pocket pro 6k for this and it comes with EF mount and instead of fiddling with adapters I was thinking that it's better to have lens control from the body digitally 3) I hear that Canon has the best auto-focus  system so I'm thinking for events shooting it might be worth it.  


I really like the Nikon color science though.  


So, any thoughts? should I make the financial effort and jump ship? or it's not worth it?

<p>EDIT: With all this talk I realize my main concern was really future proofing my glass investment for 12 bit raw. After talking with blackmagic I see that I have some options for my nikon lenses so all is good. I do agree with the Hogan article below 1000%. Most likely sticking with Nikon and expanding my glass there. </p>
