Osprey Eja 48 Women's Internal Frame Backpack

At what base weight does considering an ultralight pack like a Mariposa 60 or Exos 58 make sense? I am inexperienced but looking to get out on some 2-7 day hikes in the coming year. I want to go as light as I can while keeping some of the heavier gear that I already have (Jetboil Minimo, Nemo Quasar sleeping pad). I am just trying to figure out which pack makes sense for my experience level. 

At this point, I am aiming for right at 15 lbs.

Base weight for Pack?

  I don't want to be on a 5 day trip with a pack that causes issues. I was sad to have to return it. I will add that I had a similar issue with the Arial 65 but the REI sales associate was able to swap the straps from a different sized pack. This pack didn't seem to have that option

Couldn't make it fit

 Now the fins on the belt are a bit shorter than I'm used to with larger packs, but because of the design of the back system, you don't need a huge amount of padding there. The EXO form hip belt is comfortable and the foam is squishy. The shoulder straps are padded and breathable, and you can dial in the fit with the sternum strap and the load lifters altogether. There are just two short zippers on this pack, one in the top lid and one for the mesh pocket under the lid

  Sadly, packed with enough weight, the pain was noticeable across my ilia.   I love everything else about this pack, and felt it had everything needed for a great weekend pack (volume, side pockets, super light).  Hiked about 10 miles in it and was in a lot of pain until I wrapped an ace bandage and a puffy coat around my waist/hips to buffer the bag.  Ended up carrying a lot of weight in my shoulders too to avoid the pain

 Now this isn't a shrinking and pika job. The Asia comes in a 58, 48, and 38 litre size just like the EXO's but the hip belt and suspension system have been tweaked for a women's specific fit. The shoulder straps and hip belt are cushioned in just the right places, making it comfortable where it counts, but not adding unnecessary weight. And if you'll notice, the back panel is tensioned which allows air to flow behind you, keeping you cool when you're on the move

 All told, my base weight with the Asia comes in at just 15 pounds. Throw in a few days worth of food and water, and I reckon I'll still be under 25, but because of Austria's great suspension system, the Asia can comfortably carry up to 40 pounds. Most ultralight backpacks are debatably comfortable, but with the Asia there is no debate. It is simply a super comfortable ultralight pack

It’s worth noting that I didn’t have any issues with the straps or seam on the back as some other users did

I wanted to love this pack. Wanted to love it

 With ultralight packs, you tend to give up a little bit of comfort in the hip and the shoulder strap padding. I find that this pack is actually totally fine for me. There's a pretty good amount of padding up on the shoulders and then the hip is a little bit thinner, but it doesn't bother me I don't have any pain from that. It comes with this removable top part which I always actually have this on but it just clips on and then it gives you a little bit extra room to add some stuff in there and then if you don't need any

Osprey Eja Backpack Review

This pack is super light! They partially achieved this by getting rid of some of the convenience storage spaces, which is fine with me; HOWEVER, the straps are pretty thin, and dig into the front of your shoulders, even if you get all the weight onto your hips - and the little bit of padding on the straps is at the top of the straps, so if you're properly adjusted, the best of the padding is in the wrong place. Whoever designed it seemed to believe that a woman is going to carry the weight of all her equipment on her shoulders? Tempted to return it..
