Downsides of rollerball pens is that they are gel and may smear more than ballpoints (but not all, like the pentel energel) and don't last as long as ballpoints. You also have fewer options when it comes to pen bodies. These are really good for journaling, because you can get very fine point pens (0.5mm or smaller). If you want something that will write for a really long time and has almost no smearing, stick to ballpoints (usually a Parker G2 style refill, which is different than a Pilot G2 refill).

G2’s are cheap and they write well, but if you’re looking for something else, the Zebra sarasa, Uni Signo, Pentel EnerGel and Pilot Juice lines are all really good alternatives

I'd suggest Zebra Sarasa, Pentel Energel, and Pilot Juice Up (I prefer all of these to the Pilot G2 personally).

I LOVE these pens! They write so smooth and they don't smear easily. However, their life is just not long enough! After one day of classes, I am out of a pen! I cant afford to buy a new pen everyday at these prices. Otherwise, these pens are great in quality.

Works well with Pilot G2 and V7 RT. Works with Pentel Energel, Papermate Inkjoy, and Bic Gelocity after trimming. Leaving it too long creates pressure and causes the ink to leak. Works with Parker G2 refills with a spacer and spring (near the tip).

I like the pen and its ink, however, the pens I have been using have all broken around the screw-in area making it impossible to use them. It is extremely annoying to be taking class notes and have the pen pop open and be unusable.

Cheap and accessible, comes in colors: pentel energel. Love it in school because I could highlight immediately, little to no smear, super comfortable barrel. I also really appreciate the needle tip!
