 There's a couple of molded pieces of packaging and we're pretty much done. So looking at the deck again an oversized sort of polish bag is used to protect this turntable. Now spin it around and very carefully to make sure it doesn't drag on anything we're gonna remove this cloth bag. The cloth bag is punched through the spike to ensure it doesn't move

 That type of thing is makes this product product quite universal and obviously very easy should you be in another country or something like that. I think it'll, let's have a look actually, it's a 100 volts to 240 so look every country is covered with this. There's a couple of molded pieces of packaging and we're pretty much done.  Build quality is great, sound quality is superb for the money but most importantly it's got a digital output allowing us to integrate this with any number of different devices that may not have a phono stage or may only have a digital input like a sound bar or maybe a Duvelet Phantom. There's all sorts of things that people are wanting to play their records and and have some fun with our industry but don't have the connections in the device that they're looking at. So this turntable has been brilliantly presented and to slot exactly in that part of the industry. So let's have a look

 It's suspended off to one side allowing the larger belt to be used. You'll see the on and off switches for powering this as well. At the rear you'll see the hinges that support the lid and if I pick this up and please I'll take some photographs close up. The outputs are a big part of why this turntable exists and why it makes it unique

Had a Pro-ject Essential II for years, was a decent tt, recently the stylus died for the third time, I bought a Goldring e3 and enjoyed it very much. Then ended up upgrading the rest of the hifi so bought a Debut Carbon Evo and Schiit mani (got rid of integrated amp and got chifi tubes with no phono stage, speakers are Klipsch RP-600m).I ran the Schiit mani on the Essential II while waiting for my Debut and it sounded great, much more clear and detailed than my old phono stage (Onkyo 9010). I should say that when the Debut arrived the table as a whole sounded great, considerably less noise in general, more space (which always seems to come with less noise), bigger soundstage etc etc

 But as soon as I heard the Ortofon 2m Red I knew the sound wasn't for me, don't get me wrong it's a good cart, quite revealing but it's far too edgy for me; sibilance central and the IGD was also pretty off putting.

 I'm listening to records I've spun dozens of times and hearing new things. I've upgraded receivers, speakers and cartridges numerous times over the years, and this is the biggest leap in sound quality I've experienced. Really impressive for only $200+.  Now for the dreaded cons: This REALLY is a flimsy table

  To summarize, if you're looking to upgrade from an old Technics tank, these new tables really do sound great, but don't expect the same build quality or reliability. Unless you're very patient, I would spend more on a higher-end model from Project or Rega - these entry-level tables are probably too problematic for long-term use.

 Far, far louder than the Technics. It's not particularly noticeable if you crank the volume, but if you're listening to something subtle like acoustic folk or jazz, it is absolutely noticeable, and that's a real shame since the table has such a great sound otherwise.  To summarize, if you're looking to upgrade from an old Technics tank, these new tables really do sound great, but don't expect the same build quality or reliability. Unless you're very patient, I would spend more on a higher-end model from Project or Rega - these entry-level tables are probably too problematic for long-term use

I've used a Technics SLQ200 for 17 years without a single hiccup, so I was extremely hesitant about picking up a new, all-manual table, which looks like a flimsy toy compared to the Technics tanks (albeit a pretty one).  Well, to my surprise, even this budget table sounds MARKEDLY better than my Technics, in every way - clarity, bass - it's a huge step up, even with the so-so Ortofon OM-5E cartridge, as compared to the superior Grado Green on my Technics. I'm listening to records I've spun dozens of times and hearing new things. I've upgraded receivers, speakers and cartridges numerous times over the years, and this is the biggest leap in sound quality I've experienced

 You can go ahead and place the slit mat onto the platter now as well. Up next we will apply the tone arm counterweight. Anyone every hear about these verticals turntables? Are they a gimmick or legit in quality?

Not only did I suffer from considerable feedback issues with this deck, the belt snapped after one days use. When properly isolated it sounds good, but honestly no better than my old SP25 other than less rumble. In my opinion it is the cartridge rather than the deck that is the real star of this show, and after I suffered a 2nd belt breakage after less than a year I decided to be rid of said deck in favour of my old SP25 with a good shure cartridge upgrade. Frankly I prefer CD and DVD's the tics and crackles of vinyl may appeal to some folk but not to anyone who really wants to enjoy just the music

 In my opinion it is the cartridge rather than the deck that is the real star of this show, and after I suffered a 2nd belt breakage after less than a year I decided to be rid of said deck in favour of my old SP25 with a good shure cartridge upgrade. A good sounding deck, but it requires a firm foundation and is a bit fiddly to use.

New-used turntable day (Pro-Ject Essential gen 1)

 You need a deft touch to set the counterweight correctly! You also need to get used to not catching the belt when taking your vinyl off the player - that is my one issue with the design. I keep catching the belt when lifted a record off the player, but I'm sure that is something I'll stop doing once I'm more familiar with it. The cartridge is already mounted to the tonearm, which is a great help when assembling. To conclude; if your budget is in the £200 region for a turntable, in terms of sound quality and design, you won't find better than the Pro-Ject Essential II

For the price, this is a fantastic turntable. I'm really pleased with the crisp sound quality. It's minimal look is very stylish and the red finish is striking. The carbon tonearm is really impressive and wouldn't be out of place on a much more expensive turntable

 The cartridge is already mounted to the tonearm, which is a great help when assembling. To conclude; if your budget is in the £200 region for a turntable, in terms of sound quality and design, you won't find better than the Pro-Ject Essential II. Highly recommended.

The essential came with a basic Ortofon 5e stylus and I’ve fallen out of love with Vinyl as the sound is harsh. The hifi shop recommended the Ortofon 10 or 20, and said it would transform the sound, and I heard no difference.

The player is not as simple to put together as I first thought, there are no pictures to help guide you. I bought my player new to discover that already it seems as if the needle is dragging on the records. I have removed the plastic cover from the needle, and have messed with the balance of the tonearm, but it doesn't change anything. when played, you can't hear the needle dragging unless you remove the dust cover or the song ends
