I love my REI Flash 22 (and an REI Flash 18 before that). Very comfortable and surprisingly capable - have flown with it as my onebag on a budget airline with personal item only. The Flash 22 doesn't fold, but would lie flat in your luggage.

This probably breaks the one bag rules but I’m looking for a smaller foldable/packable back pack that I can use for hikes and day trips instead of my larger pack. I want it to be comfortable enough to carry my 2.5 L osprey water bladder and also fit a light jacket and snacks. Any recommendations would be awesome!

Packable hiking/day pack

5 pounds, roll top with brain, great water bottle pockets, super comfy. I traded in my osprey for the flash 55 and am so happy I did

Need help deciding between these bags.

The REI Flash 55 pack has been very well recieved for being comfortable, as well as the modular fearures. The small stores don't get much of that gear, which sounds like your narrow OP point of view. Mostly the larger big market stores get the specialty gear.

<div class="md"><p>I&#39;ve been lurking here for a couple months after doing my first 50-miler this past summer and yearning for more future trips. </p>

<p>Being a first time backpacker, before my trip in July I headed to my local REI to gear up.  I worked with a few sales people and was sold an Osprey Atmos 65L backpack, Oboz hiking boots, a mummy sleeping bag, etc.</p>

<p>The only backpacks I was shown was a Gregory Baltoro, Osprey Aether, and the Atmos.  In retrospect wish I was at least shown the Osprey Exos and told about weight.</p>

<p>I&#39;m just a bit perplexed why REI only offers one quilt and many many mummy bags, pushes heavy packs, and also pushes hiking boots when trail runners seems to be the popular option?   Not to mention uber expensive rain shells over the UL budget choice of Frogg Toggs. </p>

<p>So is REI just slow to adapt?  Or are the UL philosophies that far from mainstream?</p>

<p>It is REI so in theory I could return everything but that seems...immoral.  I returned the mummy bag since I&#39;m a side sleeper and felt way way too constricted.  (I have a HG Econ Burrow on order).  I also returned the Flash Air 2 tent since in retrospect I&#39;m annoyed they pushed the $50 overpriced footprint on me, the zippers were super annoying, and the tent had a lot of condensation.  While not the lowest weight, I recently got a SMD Skyscape Scout which seems very similar for half the price (with a cheap footprint and robust zippers).</p>

<p>I like the Oboz boots so will keep those.  Might as well keep the Atmos too since it is comfy and my upcoming trip will entail carrying my kids&#39; gear where that 65L capacity might get used.  And I kept all the other stuff like clothing, socks, cooking, etc.</p>

How come REI isn't embracing ultralight or quilts?

You don’t have to be ultralight but you should seriously take into consideration the weight of the items and more importantly the size of the items in making your decision on what to buy. You won’t need that whole cook set, it’s going to take up a lot of space. Rei flash 55 backpack is a great pack that’s affordable and carries weights up to 30 pounds really well.

I have never once gone on a backpacking trip and the longest hike I have gone on is 7 or so miles. I live in the PNW, I am 5'11 and around 230 but hoping to shave off another ten pounds in the next month or two. I already have a decent pair of hiking boots and socks along with a nalgene. I think I have a semi decent list going, I am okay with spending $1k to $1.2k as I know this will see a lot of use. I picked the North Face One bag as I want to eventually be getting in some fall and winter trips and I imagine it will pay for itself in time.

As for the tent, how are Marmot tents? I see all of the REI tents have sold out since the sale had started. I don't really know what I am missing but I imagine its quite a bit. Is a Jetboil a half bad idea?

New to backpacking, working on my first gear set

After much deliberation and no real limitation on budget I ended up with the REI Flash 55 for my JMT thru hike. Couldn’t have asked for a better bag. I was impressed with the weight and and functionality compared to the rest of the market.

Like many folks on this sub I'm dialing in my onebag gear for a post-pandemic world, and a packable daypack is the last major piece on my list. 

I do a fair amount of hiking when I travel, so that's the biggest use case for this bag, but I wouldn't want it to look \*wildly\* out of place if I needed a to use it in an urban setting.

Based on my research I've narrowed it down to either the mystery ranch in-and-out, the gossamer gear vagabond packable, or the new matador beast (probably the 18).  Thoughts? Experiences with any of these? Am I missing out on an obvious contender? FWIW I'm a guy with an average height/build so fit usually isn't a problem.

help me choose between packable daypacks?

I noticed that the REI Flash 55 made the PCT survey's list of most common and highest rated packs. It may not qualify as truly ultralight, but it's not too far off, so I'm hoping people on this sub may have experience with it.  I've only used it on a one-night trip so far (rented it last summer), and I liked it a lot. But putting it on on day 2 didn't feel as great as putting it on on day 1, because I was a little tender from the pressure the very firm belt padding puts on my lower back/upper butt. Has that been a problem for others? Can anyone tell me whether the padding on the hip belt (particularly at the sacrum/lower back) softens or molds to the body over time? I would think so, but it would be nice to confirm. Thank you!

REI Flash 45/55 users: does hip belt padding soften/conform to your body over time?

At what base weight does considering an ultralight pack like a Mariposa 60 or Exos 58 make sense? I am inexperienced but looking to get out on some 2-7 day hikes in the coming year. I want to go as light as I can while keeping some of the heavier gear that I already have (Jetboil Minimo, Nemo Quasar sleeping pad). I am just trying to figure out which pack makes sense for my experience level. 

At this point, I am aiming for right at 15 lbs.
