My Current Endgame

Watch out for difficult to drive cans

With what I have, I think that I can make just enough combinations to cover all the bases that I care about haha. I got the HD650's about 4 years ago now after owning RS 175's for many years before that. The most recent addition to my collection are the DT 1770's though. The reason that I got the 1770's over the regular 770's is because I am a cable destroyer. I have no knowledge of how to mod headphones, so I didn't want to mod the 770 and possibly screw it up. As for amps, that's a venture that I only started last year during the covid lockdown. I thought that I would have liked the Magni amp the most, but the Vali 2 gets a lot more use (probably 90% of the time).

Can I ask your experience with these headphones? I’m a massive bass fan and I’m struggling to know which audiophile headphones to start with, these were my first option but I’ve heard mixed things about them :/

Nice little hybrid tub amp

Usually listening to 400i with the Modi/ Vali combo via laptop or LG V40.
SENN. 599 with my fulla for my CD player or just connected to my IPhone via dongle or Dragonfly to LG phone. 
The CCA  10’s for work use and Sony BT for on the go.

Headphones for all purposes 🎶

Fantastic... For 2 Days (Edit: New Unit is Great)

I just received my pair of HD6XX's, and have spent quite a bit of time flipping through forum discussions on amps and dacs and have not reached any sort of conclusion. I have a pretty flexible budget, but obviously if the returns are severely diminished for very expensive gear I would prefer better valued.   


I see many many people advocating for using tube amps with these phones, and in particular the Bottlehead Crack. It seems strange to spend more money on an amp then on the headphones themselves, but I could also see myself upgrading phones in time ( crazy that I ended up researching what headphones to get next right after getting new ones lol). The crack should scale nicely if the next pair I buy has it in mind, right?   


I have also seen many reccomendations to buy a solid state amp for your first system , which would be considerably cheaper. How would the scalability of buying a magni or atom amp compare to the Crack. Which have less potential for future bottlenecking (and will still sound great now)?  Is it worth going for more expensive solid state amps, or are the returns pretty significantly diminished?  


Are combo devices out of the question given the above? (I do listen to music on the go sometimes, but until I get good headphones that also isolate noise I don't think portability is a big selling point - and when that time comes I could just buy a combo device I guess)

Any additional suggestions/ recommendations are more than welcome!  
These considerations have left out DACs, partly because if I get a solid state amp I will get the corresponding DAC. If I get a tube amp I'll have to delve into DAC's more I guess, but my understanding is that amps are more important than DACs.   


One more thing to note is that these headphones get more than sufficiently loud enough on my laptop, and don't pick up any mechanical noise from inside the machine - but forum talk assures that this purchase will still improve sound quality somewhat. This is anotehr reason I am interested in tube amps, because I can't see solid state really sounding that different from my laptop. What do I know though!?

Buying an amp and DAC for HD6XX

 That's the beauty of the Vali 2! It is more than compatible with other tubes on the market. The bottomline for me is the clarity and sound quality of this amplifier. You lose some of the signal from a solid state preamp, to the receiver, and finally to your headphones. This has historically, for me at least, resulted in a muddy/stuffy output

 The fact that you can tube roll with this amplifier is a huge plus. The stock tube that comes with the amp does the job, but I have already ordered an ECC88 to swap it out with. That's the beauty of the Vali 2! It is more than compatible with other tubes on the market. The bottomline for me is the clarity and sound quality of this amplifier

New Fan of Schiit Audio

My Dt990s broke yesterday (resoldered and working well again thankfully), but it prompted me to look into a potential replacement. From the research I've done though, most of the usual recommendations ( hd6xx etc) seem to lack the bass that I love on the 990s. I tried a pair of hifiman he5xxs, and while on a soundstage basis they were great, they were too open and I had to eq the bass up a lot for it to be comparable. How much do you have to spend to get something considered an "upgrade"? Any suggestions?

Are DT990s just that good?

 Once I lost the stock tube, then my Denon D7000's truly soared. Here's what worked for me: Choose warmest or lukewarm yet detailed components in the chain. Stop worrying that the Vali 2 plus your warm tube choice plus warm components will over-warm: It won't over-warm, but will accentuate and clarify yet preserve. (again for the hard of hearing: only once you ditch the stock tube) Personally also, as a side note, I found that the amp really loves low impedance phones

Now just like reviews of merit have spoketh: With a tube of worth, meaning the sound signature you prefer, then the Vali 2 is very beyond its measly $200 clams. But don't think that it's a ubiquitous fix. You'll be disappointed. Once synergy is achieved then my god, you'll fly
