 Starting off, these are a $220 USD or about $310 AUD headphones. They're in the lower end of the mid-tier headphone range and in some ways are only a small step above some of the entry-level audiophile headphones such as the Beyerdynamic DT 880, Sennheiser's own HD 58X and the new 560S that I haven't heard yet. So there's some pretty stiff competition and the need to justify their higher price given that there's some great competition for about $50 USD less. Talking briefly about the design, these are a very simple headphone they're made of plastic but they do feel sturdy

 One of them is you might be looking at it brand new or second hand and you might be looking for an additional review and the other reason being that if you've watched my channel for a while and you're looking at other reviews and you happen to know the 6XX you'll get a better sense of how I hear things, what I like and don't like and it'll help you to use my reviews more effectively in the future. So here we go, let's have a chat about the HD 6XX. Starting off, these are a $220 USD or about $310 AUD headphones. They're in the lower end of the mid-tier headphone range and in some ways are only a small step above some of the entry-level audiophile headphones such as the Beyerdynamic DT 880, Sennheiser's own HD 58X and the new 560S that I haven't heard yet

 Overall though what I found was that the 4XX kind of was a little bit in no-man's land between the two. It didn't have the impact and bass of the DT880 that I sometimes wanted and at the same time didn't have the mid-range clarity and presence of the 6XX. So it sort of got lost in between the two and realistically I cut their listening quite short because I would either choose the 6XX or the DT880 and the 4XX didn't really come into play. That's not to say that the 4XX doesn't have its own merits but in this particular scenario I would choose either the 6XX or the DT880 before I'd reach for the 4XX

 So there's some pretty stiff competition and the need to justify their higher price given that there's some great competition for about $50 USD less. Talking briefly about the design, these are a very simple headphone they're made of plastic but they do feel sturdy. Scott reckons he's got about 700,000 hours on these, I'm guessing that's an exaggeration but they still look pretty good, you can't tell that they've been a daily driver and a workhorse they still have a good look and feel to them. That speaks to the quality and the longevity of this design despite being quite plasticky

Massdrop X Sennheiser HD6XX Headphone Review - Is it still a winner?

In fact, I'm so happy with the quality of the sound (which blows away my next nicest pair) that I'm already looking forward to finding something new. My setup is simple: Schiit Stack (Magni 3+ & Modi). I currently own: Audio Technica M50x (my first baby), Sennheiser HD 6XX, and the DT 1990s.

Great but not the best.

 So if you've got a really big head like that, it'll, it'll actually still work for you. Now these do clamp on your head pretty tight. I'm a huge fan of the clamp force on this. I think it's very, very comfortable

 It's going to be depending on the game and how you play. Another question that I know I'm going to be getting a lot, 6XXs or 660s. And here's the thing. My thoughts on this are with the 6XXs and the 600, you get this texture and this detail, but you also get this odd sense of smoothness to the sound

 So this is probably going to be a longer video if you want to skip to any particular part, go ahead and jump here and that'll get you to wherever you want to go. That being said, the quick and dirty of this review is buy this headphone if you've never heard 6XXs before, if you've never heard HD600s before, if you want to hear what a basic representation of neutrality is, this is a great, great headphone, especially at the price of $200. Now one thing to factor in is that the HD6XX is a very, very popular headphone, which is actually part of the reason why I recommend getting it is because it kind of offers a very good reference for a lot of people who have heard that headphone and it makes it easier for people to compare based off of that reference, if that makes any sense at all. But one thing you should be aware of is that there have been reports of very, very long waits because these are so popular

Massdrop HD6XX (Sennheiser HD650) Review

These are a very bass boosted pair of headphones that sound good enough to replace my IEM’s when on the go. They get uncomfortable after an hour though, so these are only recommended to wear on short bursts.

 Sundara is overall faster and crispier especially in the bass and highs with a bit more air and soundstage. But, for the sub-200 category, I would say that HD6XX is one of the best bang for the buck, bar-none.

 All in all, I would say I am happy without EQ but much happier listening to this pair of headphones with proper EQ. I can now understand about all the hypes around this "antiquated" or rather "Vintage" can is well founded. Sundara is overall faster and crispier especially in the bass and highs with a bit more air and soundstage. But, for the sub-200 category, I would say that HD6XX is one of the best bang for the buck, bar-none

 I currently own and love my Hifiman Sundara. See my reviews if interested. Fresh out of the box, I hooked it up to my Mac mini M1 -> USB -> SMSL Sanskrit DAC -> Monoprice THX 887 headphone amp using 1/4" single ended output. I was surprised with the sound quality of HD6XX without any EQ

 The EQ definitely improved the bass (I'm not a bass nut) further. The bass was no slouch to start with but with proper EQ it is risen to the next level. Do not over do it otherwise you will be greeted with distortion. The dip correction around 8K certainly helps and the peak correction near 14K rectified the sharpness that I mentioned earlier

Maybe the best headphones out there sub $200 category

With most headphones I feel like only part of the music is in focus, with the clear every little detail is where it is supposed to be. The bass is engaging and has a great slam. Compared to a neutral reference like the K612 or even the HD 600 it sounds a little darker, but still very natural.

 This is also why open-backs have amazing soundstage, so if you really NEED any sort of noise isolation, I definitely would not recommend this pair. Also, the bass drops off pretty hard, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you are looking for a lot of sub-bass. You can mitigate it just a bit with EQ software such as Sonarworks SoundID, but it definitely wouldn’t sound like you had a speaker system with a big subwoofer.

 The soundstage (the three-dimensionality of the sound) is extremely wide as it is an open-back type headphones, and detail across the whole frequency spectrum was incredible. Although, as a characteristic of ALL open-back headphones, the downside is that outside noise will leak in as if you basically had nothing on, and what you listen to will leak out. This is also why open-backs have amazing soundstage, so if you really NEED any sort of noise isolation, I definitely would not recommend this pair. Also, the bass drops off pretty hard, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you are looking for a lot of sub-bass

This was one of the first true “audiophile” pair of headphones I purchased, for the price (was $199.99 at the time of purchase) I think it is simply unbeatable in sound quality. Probably the best pair of headphones under $500.

Granted I am comparing to bassy headphones, but even compared to my Sennheier HD6xx, they have minimal bass and no punch. The midrange again lacks in the low end, but the upper mids are fine, if not forward.

**EDIT: I'm exchanging the QC35 for the Bose 700 today as they went on sale, so I will test those and update later!**

**Introduction**

I’ve been curious about over-ear wireless headphones for a while. Since I’ve been working from home, I’ve been using headphones quite a bit, and always being hooked up to a wired setup (Sennheiser HD6xx into Schiit Magni 3+) isn’t always convenient. I decided to pick up all three headphones as I could return the ones I didn’t like. So here’s my opinion of the three. Using an iPhone XR and a 2018 iPad. I’m not going to bother with specs and accessories and all that as you can find that elsewhere.

I started with the Sony WH-headphones as they have a great reputation. But I was annoyed by a couple things and am an Apple user, so thought I’d check out the Beats. And then based off quick impressions, I decided to pick up the Bose as well to really try out all three.

**Quality/Comfort**

All three seem pretty evenly matched for quality. They all have matte finishes and nice feeling leather pads. I’d assume any of these would last a few years with heavy use. Comfort is very different for each of these headphones.

*Sony WH-1000XM3:* these are comfortable and would work well for using for a couple hours at a time. The pads go around the ears (just barely) but are extremely soft so not bothersome. The headband is soft and doesn’t pinch at all. They are just light enough to not really care about the weight. They can definitely get a bit hot after a while or if you’re moving around, which is the only downside.

*Bose QuietComfort 35:* these are even more comfortable than the Sony. The pads are a bit thinner and there’s more room in the cups for ears. And they are a little lighter which makes it easier to wear for longer periods. They can also get hot after a while but doesn’t seem quite as bad as the Sony.

*Beats Solo Pro:* very uncomfortable. The headphones and pads have an extremely high amount of clamp which puts a ton of pressure ON the ears (they are on-ears, not over-ears). I can also feel a touch of a hot spot on the headband on the top of my head. They are light, but the pressure and heat from the pads is awful.

**Usability**

*Sony*: with multiple devices, these are a pain to use. They can only connect to one device at a time, so you have to go to bluetooth settings on one device, manually disconnect, then go to the other device, and manually connect. This usually works, but it’s several extra steps which is disappointing. Beyond that, there is an app which allows some customization which is nice, but the app is annoying so I’d prefer to avoid it. Controls are all touchpad based which works well but can be fidgety. On the plus side, these headphones can control more apps (like YouTube), and the bluetooth distance seems better than the Bose.

*Bose*: these easily work with multiple devices and it’s easy to swap out on each, which is a big plus. I also like that the headphones announce which devices it is connected to by name. The app doesn’t do much, just allows you to switch the bonus button to either noise canceling toggle or virtual assistant. Controls are all button based, which I actually prefer over the touchpad of the Sony. The buttons are in a comfortable location and it’s intuitive. But these headphones have poor interaction with some apps (like YouTube), and the bluetooth distance gets lost easier than the Sony. Also, I prefer the physical on/off switch because I am much more likely to turn them off when not in use, and that has helped preserve the battery life.

*Beats*: these also easily work with multiple Apple devices as it’s much more native. Controls are button based and seem to work well. I also really like the physical folding/unfolding as a means to turn them on and off as it preserves battery life well. Another plus is the bluetooth distance which seems to be the best of the three. However, it would not resume YouTube pause/play for some reason.

**Noise Canceling**

*Sony*: incredible noise canceling. With these headphones on and activated, you can barely hear anything around you. Both passive and active work well to block out noise. There’s also minimal, if any, of the “cabin pressure” effect on the ears somehow. The transparency type feature turns the canceling down a bit but I still can’t hear what’s going on much.

*Bose*: very good noise canceling. They don’t block and filter quite as much as the Sony, but very close. There is though a bit of pressure on the ears. There’s no transparency feature but you can toggle noise cancelation between high and low (I can’t hear any difference between the two).

*Beats*: good noise canceling, although I think it’s mostly due to the extremely high clamp and thick pads. I don’t hear much difference switching noise canceling on and off. Transparency cranks up the ambient sound way too much, just like AirPod Pros. I wish you could adjust.

**Sound**

This for me was probably the biggest difference between all three, and where most of you are probably interested.

*Sony*: overall tone is warm, bassy, and somewhat V-shaped, but you can tweak with the app EQ. With the EQ flat, there’s a ton of bass that can bleed into the low mids. The midrange sounds warm but the vocal range is a bit recessed. The treble is smooth and detailed up to a point, but the high treble rolls off quickly. They are fun and exciting consumer headphones, but I’d prefer to at least take down the bass in the app, if not boost the mids for a bit more clarity. I also felt they had the biggest and widest soundstage, maybe due to the bass or due to the noise cancelation. They won’t replace neutral wired headphones for audiophiles, but for portable use they are pretty good. They can also get quite loud if that’s your thing.

*Bose*: overall tone is more mid forward but a bit boxy. The bass is more controlled than the Sony, although still quite punchy. Midrange to me is a bit more forward, but not obnoxiously so. The treble however feels hit or miss as some of the detailed frequencies are recessed, which makes them sound kind of boxy and stuffy. Unfortunately, there’s no adjustment in the app. The soundstage was smaller as well compared to the Sonys. For your average listener they will be impressively punchy and inoffensive, but audiophiles may find them lacking treble and detail. They also don’t seem to get quite as loud and seem to compress a bit with the volume pushed.

*Beats*: overall tone is bright and harsh. Somehow, and I don’t know if these are defective, there’s almost no bass. Granted I am comparing to bassy headphones, but even compared to my Sennheier HD6xx, they have minimal bass and no punch. The midrange again lacks in the low end, but the upper mids are fine, if not forward. The treble is very dominant in an unpleasant way. Think of a Beyer DT770 but with a massive low cut which would just leave the painful treble.

**Conclusion**

I really wish one of these headphones jumped out in every way over the competitors, but they all have pros and cons. Unfortunately for the Beats, the cons (terrible sound and horribly uncomfortable) far outweigh any synergies of working with Apple products. For the others, it depends on what is most important.

If you want the best sounding headphones, the best noise canceling, or the most modern features, the Sony are going to be the best bet. If you need to swap between multiple devices frequently or are less concerned with sound quality and adjustments, the Bose are a good pick.

I’ll likely stick with the Sony as the sound and noise canceling are better than the rest, and the comfort is still quite good. I’m not thrilled about the difficulty in swapping devices, but maybe someday they’ll fix via firmware update.

Beats: good noise canceling, although I think it’s mostly due to the extremely high clamp and thick pads. I don’t hear much difference switching noise canceling on and off. Transparency cranks up the ambient sound way too much, just like AirPod Pros. I wish you could adjust.

Sound

This for me was probably the biggest difference between all three, and where most of you are probably interested.

Sony: overall tone is warm, bassy, and somewhat V-shaped, but you can tweak with the app EQ. With the EQ flat, there’s a ton of bass that can bleed into the low mids. The midrange sounds warm but the vocal range is a bit recessed. The treble is smooth and detailed up to a point, but the high treble rolls off quickly. They are fun and exciting consumer headphones, but I’d prefer to at least take down the bass in the app, if not boost the mids for a bit more clarity. I also felt they had the biggest and widest soundstage, maybe due to the bass or due to the noise cancelation. They won’t replace neutral wired headphones for audiophiles, but for portable use they are pretty good. They can also get quite loud if that’s your thing.

Bose: overall tone is more mid forward but a bit boxy. The bass is more controlled than the Sony, although still quite punchy. Midrange to me is a bit more forward, but not obnoxiously so. The treble however feels hit or miss as some of the detailed frequencies are recessed, which makes them sound kind of boxy and stuffy. Unfortunately, there’s no adjustment in the app. The soundstage was smaller as well compared to the Sonys. For your average listener they will be impressively punchy and inoffensive, but audiophiles may find them lacking treble and detail. They also don’t seem to get quite as loud and seem to compress a bit with the volume pushed.

Beats: overall tone is bright and harsh. Somehow, and I don’t know if these are defective, there’s almost no bass. Granted I am comparing to bassy headphones, but even compared to my Sennheier HD6xx, they have minimal bass and no punch. The midrange again lacks in the low end, but the upper mids are fine, if not forward. The treble is very dominant in an unpleasant way. Think of a Beyer DT770 but with a massive low cut which would just leave the painful treble.

Conclusion

I really wish one of these headphones jumped out in every way over the competitors, but they all have pros and cons. Unfortunately for the Beats, the cons (terrible sound and horribly uncomfortable) far outweigh any synergies of working with Apple products. For the others, it depends on what is most important.

If you want the best sounding headphones, the best noise canceling, or the most modern features, the Sony are going to be the best bet. If you need to swap between multiple devices frequently or are less concerned with sound quality and adjustments, the Bose are a good pick.

I’ll likely stick with the Sony as the sound and noise canceling are better than the rest, and the comfort is still quite good. I’m not thrilled about the difficulty in swapping devices, but maybe someday they’ll fix via firmware update.

Did you try adjusting the amount of ambient noise in the app for the XM3s? I found you can let through a considerable amount. 

Also, any reason you didn't try the Bose 700?

I had the XM3s, and in terms of noise cancelling they are hands down the best I've had. But the build quality is a real problem, and I had 3 replacements in 3 months, despite treating them extremely carefully. Your description of the sound is very accurate, and it makes for a fun listen. However, the build quality made me return these and opt for the Sennheiser Momentum 3 and I also received the M&D MW65 as a gift.

The sound quality of the Sennheisers is far superior, and it has a much better separation and clarity, while having great bass (not overwhelming bass - though this can be adjusted if desired). They are also equal with the Sony's for comfort but probably not as good as the Bose, and have great build quality and are made from premium materials. The automatic sensors are a little annoying and I've disabled this with the latest firmware so that I can use it with my headphone stand. However to turn off the headphones, it requires folding so I only use the headphone stand when working and moving between my desk. When not using, they're stored safely in the case. 

The MW65s are very neutral and can be low on volume, but I found that on my Mac, the low volume issue didn't occur, but it did on my phone. Noise cancelling mode also boosts the volume & bass as a result of natural distortion, but it doesn't compromise the other elements that much in my experience. The noise cancelling is also nothing to write home about, but I really appreciate the clarity and it feels like a true replication of the source material. These are also the most comfortable headphones I've ever had, and are made from high quality leather and metal materials. They feel extremely durable, but are not as portable as any of the other options as they do not fold.

The only reason I did not get the Bose QCIIs is the lack of USB C and Bluetooth 5.0, which in 2020 is a necessity in my opinion. I also did not find the Bose NC 700s very comfortable and they felt cheap in my opinion. The sound quality was also not as great as the ones I've mentioned. Both Bose options did have superior noise cancelling compared to the Sennheiser and M&D models I've mentioned.

This was really useful thanks! I was looking at buying the  WH-1000MX3 because my PCX550s have a touch-control pad covering the enitre side of one pad; any time I wore a hood it would make it skip/pause/rewind a song:/

This is an awesome review. Question - do you like other Bose products? I have never had Bose headphones, but I've always liked their portable speakers, especially for their warm and rich, bass/mid heavy sound (albeit a bit doctored, it does the job for a small speaker).
