 So when it comes to performance I Wanted to point out just a few more things with this guy. It does have some limitations, of course, mainly with the autofocus and it's not gonna be really any good for a focus tracking or any type of movement. It's definitely not made for that anyways, but that's gonna also limit what you can do in video with it as well. It's not made for any kind of sports or really any tracking for that matter as you've seen

 It's really gonna come down to your needs, but at the end of the day, the Sigma has great value. I Give it four stars. Okay, let's get into it. Performance: How does this thing perform? Let's start with autofocus

 So here's the box and inside you'll find just a little bit of paperwork, a nice carrying case that Sigma usually includes, and the lens and a lens hood. Now being in Art Lens, the build quality is great, but this particular build is a little bit questionable in some regards. It measures seven and a quarter inches long with the lens hood attached and about five and 1/8 inches without. It gets a little bit weird when you focus and a big barrel comes out the front showing you the minimum focus distance and magnification ratios, and with the lens hood on, it's going to be completely concealed

 In addition to Sony E, the 70mm Macro is available in Canon EF and Sigma SA mounts&mdash;both developed for SLRs. The 70mm isn't available for Nikon SLRs, which is surprising.

 The Tamron SP 90mm is a little bit more expensive, but at $649 it's not much of a further stretch than the $569 Sigma is asking for the 70mm Art.

I tested the lens in a Sony E mount. I was curious to see if it would focus just as well as a native lens. All focus functions work&mdash;phase detection, AF-C, AF-A, and Sony's EyeAF system. But the 70mm Macro isn't the fastest-focusing lens in the world

 A crop sensor camera will certainly get you images that look even closer to your subject. -. Well, let's look at build quality. The lens feels solid and metallic and slightly heavy, actually weighing about half a kilogram or just over a pound

 It wouldn't be my first choice for a portrait lens, though On an Aps-c camera, you'll get images that are the full-frame equivalent of about 105 millimeter with a much deeper depth of field. Some would argue that that would make your macro photography a lot easier. A crop sensor camera will certainly get you images that look even closer to your subject. -

 and also the shorter focal length makes them a bit easier to handhold. Camera shake is less of an issue at 70 millimeter as opposed to say 100 millimetre. It would be a lot easier with image Stabilization Ray, which as I mentioned, this lens does not feature. The disadvantage of a 70 millimeter macro lens is that you have to get very close to your subject when doing macro photography, which some creepy-crawlies don't necessarily appreciate

 Let's challenge the lens with a much higher resolution full-frame camera. I've adapted it here onto my 42 megapixel Sony A7r 2, again, straight from F 2.8 The middle of the image is razor sharp and so the corners. An astonishing performance

The auto focus doesn't work much of the time, especially in dim lighting. The lens hunts frequently for focus, plus it's very loud. I may keep it since I can't find a low cost alternative but I'll have to mostly use manual focus.

Auto focus is lacking

  The focus-by-wire gets a lot of bad press. I have no complaints about it. This lens does require quite a few rotations of the focus ring to move from infiinite to 1:1, but typically when I'm out in the meadows shooting flowers/bugs and what not, I've already got the lens extended. The focus-by-wire is definitely advantageous for micro-adjustment focus

 This lens is well-reviewed online, so I'll focus on why you shouldn't get this lens.  If you're an auto-focus fanatic, this isn't the lens for you. You can delimit focus to 0.258-0

 You can delimit focus to 0.258-0.5m or 0.5m to infinite, and this does improve the responsiveness of this lens to auto-fucus, but otherwise, it's not a fast auto-focus Macro

Great Macro lens for the price

 Build quality is good, as expected. Focus limiter is a good feature IF AF actually worked. Basically have to set the camera mode to DMF, set limiter to type of shot, than fine adjust manually OR just flip to MF and manually focus everything. Can't understand the rave reviews - yes its sharp as is typical with Sigma lenses BUT it fails miserably in it's implementation of AF, especially if you're using Sony cameras such as A6500 with it's advanced AF system that cannot be fully utilized

 Wanted to add a new macro lens (been using the old Sigma 50mm F2.8 macro with adapter) and thought this would be a worthwhile upgrade. NOT! The autofocus is pretty much worthless, excessive, noisy hunting before locking in (if it does at all) with inaccurate focus point, especially un-useable for any macro work. Long barrel extension that adds to overall length to accommodate the E-Mount

Generally, I love Sigma lenses for the Sony E-Mount as I have and love the trifecta of 16, 30, and 56mm F1.4 lenses. Wanted to add a new macro lens (been using the old Sigma 50mm F2.8 macro with adapter) and thought this would be a worthwhile upgrade

Why have AF if it doesnt work?

The auto-focus is disappointingly slow and noisy. For macro work that is not a problem because I generally use manual focus for that. Used on my Sony A7R2 the camera sometimes takes a picture even when not focused at all! Strange, that doesn't happen with any other AF lenses.  The slow auto-focus becomes a nuisance when using the lens for 'normal' subjects

Focus is slow, images are good.

I can't afford the Sony 90mm lens so this seemed like the next best choice. I'm using this with an A6000. Overall it works, but the gears are louder than I expected.
