1st year in the hobby

 I figured I'd pick up the SP200 and an su8, and the amp side of things would be identical (i mean they're both thx amps, obviously they'd sound the same, right?) well I was wrong, very wrong, I noticed immediately upon connecting them that the SMSL sounded significantly inferior to the 788. At first I attributed this to dacs, as you can't bypass the 788's dac, so I was using it as a combo, vs the su8 into sp200. But after 3 days, and using the 788 as just a dac with the RCA out into the SP200, I can confirm this SMSL sp200 does indeed sound worse. I picked up the 887 as it released at the same time I was testing the SP200, and it was nearly identical in sound to the 788

 That amp is vastly superior to the lower end THX amps. People think clean is all that matters, it's not. Just because 2 amps are comparatively clean, does not mean they're delivering the same sound quality. It's not coloring it/distorting

 So I returned the sp200, and the su8, and am now using the 887. If anyone doesn't believe me about the sounds of the thx amps, go ahead and get multiple to test yourself, in fact, if you really want to see what's going on with the budget thx amps, check out the benchmark hpa4, and see what thx is capable of when properly implemented. A decent amp, but suffers THX compression quite badly

I've owned four headphone amps; Schiit Magni 3, Schiit Asgard 2, SMSL SP100 and RME ADI-2 DAC.

Every time I upgraded from a SS amp to another I thought I heard a CLEAR difference. The fact of the matter is there really wasn't any, I just wanted to imagine it so that I knew I didn't waste my money. They all sound distort-free. The only thing was that with the Magni 3 the channel-inbalance was a thing at certain levels but this was due to the volume control.

The only one that actually had any difference was the SP100. Clearly more bass-heavy and less harsh, but that's it.

My personal opinion: the THX AAA are peak solid state amps and made most other designs obsolete. You can get something different, if you prefer a certain coloration to the sound signature, but you cant get something better

I'm curious what's everyone's experiences in the matter. I've never tried anything beyond entry level (JDS Labs/schiit magni) and hear so many divisive opinions. And then you'll get other people comparing the 887 to like, a $1000amp and say they hear no difference.

What's your opinion on the differences between amps?

  SMSL decided to use a liner potentiometer ( volume control ) which makes the output even on low gain too great. For my IEM listening I moved 3-5mm is all on the volume knob. I get static at 50% which I would never reach, but I can hear it when music is not playing. At low listening levels you can hear channel imbalance

The SP200 THX Amp: Tons of power, meh volume control

Therefore, I can't justify keeping it because both the iFi micro iDSD BL and SMSL SP200 sound a lot better in comparison when I consider bass quality. The bass presented on the iFi and SMSL sounded less muddy and the bass was positioned where it was supposed to be, near the bottom. Can’t believe I started this hobby with the amazing CALs and ofc this subreddit - love seeing everyone’s setups and reading recommendations! This is really addicting - things really did snowball for me!.

Started this hobby 2 months ago after I ditched my old wireless gaming headset and replaced it with the CAL - it was bassy and impressive, wayyyyy better than my old headset! So I chased after a few more “budget” headphones and bought the Fidelio X2HR, HD58X and Monoprice Modern Retro. Wasn’t too satisfied with the Fidelio X2HR and Monoprice Modern Retro - mainly sound and comfort issues - so I returned those. The HD58X became my daily drivers from then on.

After that, I wondered what could I be missing out on? One day, I was like “fuck it” and I impulse bought the iFi micro iDSD BL that I’ve been eyeing for a while and on top of that I bought the Ananda without any detailed research - it was also underrated compared to the Sundara I kept hearing about. Oh boy... I was wow’d by this new combo... I never heard anything sound this fucking good in my life (besides live concerts). Everything sounded so damn smooth, like buttery smooth. The Anandas had this sparkle and airiness to it, everything sounded alive and full of energy... turn things up a notch with xBass and the Ananda just rumbles and slaps - it was just so damn fun. This new combo sounded almost like the real thing if you're listening to high quality live recordings and toggling that 3D+ on. I'm a bit of a basshead and I kept hearing things that bassheads should consider i.e. closed back dynamic headphones like the TH-900, etc ... In my opinion, I think open-back planars are next level and when paired with the iFi micro iDSD BL (or something equivalent), they become superb bass cannons - that flat bass extension can't be overlooked!

Next, I decided it was a good idea to buy my endgame headphones TH909 a week later, it looked so goddamn beautiful, oh and it was an open back bass cannon? That thing was calling to me. Again, the TH909 + iFi micro iDSD BL blew me away, bass was big and nothing sounding muddy at all, it was a kind of bright but not too harsh it lacked some of that buttery smoothness, airiness and sparkle the Anandas had.

A recent arrival was the Beyerdynamic DT177X GO which had me struggling with comfort and sealing. It also sounded okay, the bass was there but wasn't as full (probably sealing issue) but the CALs had better bass and more energetic sound despite being too intimate sounding. After pad swapping to the Dekoni sheepskins, the DT177X GO had tight bass, sounded more spacious and darker than the CALs and has better isolation and less leakage.

My most recent purchases are the SMSL SP200 which arrived today; the Topping E30 and HD600 are also recent but still haven't arrived.

I purchased the Mayflower ARC mk2 in April with the intention of having one desktop dac/amp but it didn't arrive until early June. The Mayflower ARC mk2 with DSP on is just so punchy, much more punchier than my iFi micro iDSD BL. The bass was sort of muddy and unforgiving as in it was just an ear throb on some bass-heavy songs. There was no height to the bass - it just punches you in the eardrum IN HUGE QUANTITIES... Therefore, I can't justify keeping it because both the iFi micro iDSD BL and SMSL SP200 sound a lot better in comparison when I consider bass quality. The bass presented on the iFi and SMSL sounded less muddy and the bass was positioned where it was supposed to be, near the bottom.

Well this is certainly addicting...

Sound quality equivalent to my Beyerdynamic A20 although the SP200 seems a little brighter right out of the box. Noticeable improvement over a Liquid Spark and Asgard 1 which lack the richness and reality of sound of the better amps. However the 1/4 inch jack on the SP200 is showing signs of having a loose connection as I sometimes need to move the plug around for proper connection. This was an open box "like new" purchase

Great Sound but Build Quality Question

On top of the SMSL SP200 sits a three-way audio switch, and I did some rigorous A/B-testing, believe me. Overall, aside from the SP200 having a bit more power, the difference sound-wise wasn't huge. The Magni 3 sounded a bit warmer, and even though I loved that warmth combined with my Sennheiser HD660S, the SP200 matched better with my newest headphone addition: the Monoprice Monolith M1070.

SP200 is nice gear. Wish it had the flexibility of other THX amps. It's just too much for sensitive headphones.

Replaced that piece of Schiit

Heard a friends, liked it quite a bit and bought a used one from the seller but it never arrived so I did a little more research and bought a Topping A50 directly from the manufacturer in China for about the same price. I like the sound a little better on the SP200. The A50 is just as clean but has a little different sound.

Can't say anything about the amp since it got lost or stolen in shipment
