If you want to save some money on a similar camera, check out the Sony &alpha;6100. It's very similar to the Sony &alpha;6400 in design, with a rangefinder-style body, textured handgrip, and tilting screen, although it isn't weather-sealed and has a lower-resolution viewfinder. That said, it's slightly cheaper and offers near-identical performance in most areas. It delivers impressive image quality with good noise handling capability at higher ISO levels for low light. It also has an amazing autofocus system that quickly and effectively tracks moving subjects in photos and videos. If you like to shoot video, it offers the same frame rate options and similar video quality. However, it similarly lacks in-body image stabilization and does a poor job reducing camera shake in 4k.

Get the &alpha;6400 if you want a weather-sealed body and a higher-resolution EVF, but if you want to save a bit of money and don't mind losing out on those two features, go with the &alpha;6100.

Sony cameras are known for their incredibly reliable autofocus, so the mid-range Sony &alpha;6100 is a great option if you want to shoot sports or moving subjects, whether birds in a park or your kid's softball game. Though its menu system takes some getting used to, the camera has plenty of customization options and a fairly simple button layout in a relatively compact form factor. Sony's Alpha lineup also tends to stand above the pack for battery life, at least among mirrorless cameras, which drain the battery faster than DSLRs like the Nikon D3500 above.

For a little more money, the Sony &alpha;6400 will give you a sturdier, weather-sealed body and a higher-resolution viewfinder. If these aren't dealbreakers, the &alpha;6100 will nab you the same image quality and leave a bit more room in your budget to put toward lenses. If you're set on Sony but on an even tighter budget, the older Sony &alpha;6000 holds up surprisingly well. However, it shows its age when you compare its autofocus performance and viewfinder resolution to newer models. Bottom line: though they're probably the least intuitive options on this list, Sony's APS-C lineup includes some of the best digital cameras for beginners, so you can't go wrong with any of them, especially if you need top-notch autofocus for faster subjects.

If you don't want to spend quite as much, consider the Sony &alpha;6100, the entry-level model of Sony's latest slew of APS-C cameras. It's very similar to the Sony &alpha;6400 mentioned above. However, unlike that model or the Nikon Z 50, it has a lower-resolution viewfinder and a more plasticky build with no weather-sealing. Despite these hardware differences, this is still a great option for those getting started with photography. It uses the same high-resolution sensor as more expensive models in Sony's APS-C lineup and has the same highly effective autofocus system that Sony cameras are known for.

It's also a great option if you do a lot of traveling since it's portable and has a very good battery life compared to most other entry-level mirrorless cameras. That said, it uses Sony's older menu system that's fairly convoluted and hard to navigate, which is especially annoying given the limited number of command dials. If you don't mind some of its design quirks, this is a great camera to start photography with.

 Now. For me, by far the biggest selling point to get into any sony alpha, camera is the new real-time autofocus tracking. The beauty of the sony system is that it will seamlessly interchange between tracking and object to tracking the face to tracking the eye and then back to the object. It'S fantastic for kids running around pets jumping it does a very good job

 They do have better glass on there as default lenses. Now another improvement, you're gon na see on the a6 to 100 is the new 24 megapixel sensor. Now, of course, it's not new for what we've seen on the market today, but compared to these 6000. It gives substantial improvements in low-light we had an opportunity to use the a 6100 a while back

 If you want an even simpler interface, those can be a good option for you as well. But if I'm looking at a brand new camera and I've got an a 6000 even at a really good deal and then in a 6100, I really think having the real time tracking a lot of focus having the better image quality, the better JPEG color and even Getting an upgrade in video is worth that money, so I hope you find this helpful.  However, do you keep in mind that when you're shooting at that high frame rate you're not really seeing what's happening, real-time you're always seeing basically a slideshow of the last photo that you took, and that means that you're a step behind the game. I do like it, though, for you know, trying to get the flag here and just kind of get that one moment where it's you know the wind's blowing it's pointing out the direction I want. I still far prefer to go down to more of the mid shooting speed more around six frames per second for children and family and pets. I say I think it's still fast enough and it gives me a good opportunity to be able to track them as they move around the scene now, because this is an entry level camera I'm endeavoring to use the sixteen to fifty kit lens that comes with the Camera this has been around since the very beginning and honestly, it is largely considered one of the worst kit lenses in the market

The 6 Best Mirrorless Cameras Under $1,000 - Spring 2022

If you're out for a day at the theme park, or bouncing around museums and other tourist sites, you should absolutely bring a spare battery or two. The a6100 is supposed to get you about 400 shots per charge, or about two hours of video recording time, but those numbers are a little optimistic. You'll get there if you shoot in burst mode, but fall short if you use the camera like most people do.

The Sony a6100 is a compact, speedy camera with strong image quality and excellent autofocus. Family photographers will love it, but enthusiasts may want to consider the a6400 instead.

The Record button is at an odd place, nestled in at the right side of the rear thumb rest, so that it's almost on the right side of the camera. You can disable one-touch video recording if you want to, as it is possible to press it accidentally&mdash;if you do so, you'll need to switch the Mode dial to the movie position to roll video.

 The company introduced the a6000 in 2014 and put so much tech into it that it's still relevant and on sale, for a lower price, years later. The a6100 modernizes the design by adding a touch screen, 4K video, and a best-in-class autofocus system. It's not quite the standout today as its predecessor was when it debuted, though, and enthusiasts might be turned off by its plastic exterior and lack of weather protection. But strong image quality and great autofocus make it a fine camera for vacationers and family photographers

 If you invest in a stabilizer and shoot small clips at a time, then this Sony could work for you. I gave it four stars because the quality is unmatched at this price point.

  It’s a shame because aside from these two issues, this is the perfect camera. For travel, I sacrificed the video sharpness and battery life to go with the Canon M6 mark ii, which can record continuously outside for almost 2 hours without any overheating, and has significantly better rolling shutter performance. If you invest in a stabilizer and shoot small clips at a time, then this Sony could work for you. I gave it four stars because the quality is unmatched at this price point

 Worst of all, I’m not sure if I had a bad unit, or if these vary by unit, but this camera would overheat after just 27 continuous minutes of recording video, in a cooled down room, and in about 15 continuous minutes of recording video outside in the heat. This may not be an issue for recording small clips, as it does last longer and cool down in between recordings, but it was a deal breaker for me.  It’s a shame because aside from these two issues, this is the perfect camera. Great Camera Aside from Overheating and Rolling Shutter

 The Cannon M6 Mark ii, Sony A6400, or Fujifilm XT-30 all have better viewfinders for a very small price difference. The auto-focus is amazing and if you are just a casual user who will stick with the kit lens this is a good deal. But the auto-focus on most modern cameras are very good as well and I've rarely had to complain about them.  Sony has committed themselves much more to their full frame offerings than the APS-C format

 I'm primarily a stills shooter and image quality is my priority. Because of this I'll be going over to Fuji because I believe the XT-30 will better meet the needs I have with a huge line of affordable quality lenses and the XF18-55 kit lens is the absolute best on the market. If you are primarily a video shooter and can live with the limitations of the A6100's viewfinder this may be a good deal for you. But if you plan to stay with Sony for a small price you can update to the A6400 get a metal body, a much better EVF, and a few other perks

 Its true that Sigma and others have tried to step in to fill the gaps in Sony's line up, but you have to ask yourself if this company doesn't have a complete line up of lenses for APS-C how do they treat the APS-C cameras for firmware updates, software updates, and camera bodies? Their priority is clearly with full frame. Remember you're buying into a system of lenses as the camera body is meant to be updated as technology advances. If you have ten Sony lenses you'll have a strong incentive to stay with their products so do yourself a favor and make certain the company you choose has a track record of continuous improvement and development.  I got this as a gift from a well meaning relative, and to be honest I prefer Sony's color science in JPEG

 That said I wont be keeping it because I can't live with the EVF. I recommend you look for what you need and want in a camera and then do your homework as to which system will meet that need best. I'm primarily a stills shooter and image quality is my priority. Because of this I'll be going over to Fuji because I believe the XT-30 will better meet the needs I have with a huge line of affordable quality lenses and the XF18-55 kit lens is the absolute best on the market

Great Entry Level Camera with Room to Grow

This is a wonderful starter camera! Friends have been recommending for me to try the Sony APSC line for years and I finally made the purchase late last year. I originally purchased the A6000 but upgraded to the A6100 after looking at the updated specs. So far I've loved this camera. I recommend skipping on the kit lenses and jumping strait for a higher end lens, but I'm impressed by the quality of photos off such a well-priced camera

While some have mentioned that the touch screen is easy to accidentally touch as you're taking pictures, I haven't experienced that at all, and have really liked that I can quickly change focus using the screen. Overall impressed and would definitely recommend this model

Great Camera

 I have had so much fun and the only limiting factors I see right now between this and an a7 are two things: APS-C format, and low light performance. Again, this is for photography. I highly recommend Sony's 18-105 f/4 lens. Every other lense you get should be a full frame lense for when you graduate to a full frame Sony camera!
