 I love full flat grinds with a little bit of an unsharpened swedge at the very, very top, but a very good, strong, very capable blade there coming down to a good, precise tip. No complaints with that tip. Great overall EDC shape and design, and then they give you that really nice, generous finger choil that we'll look at here in just a moment, and you can absolutely get a lot done with this full flat ground blade. Now it is made with CPM S35VN steel

 So from what I found here, you can touch it up very easily with ceramic rods, as well as it's going to hold a really good edge for an extended period of time. It's a little bit of an upgrade over S30V in my opinion, not by a huge margin, but you'll definitely tell a little bit of a difference in the edge retention, as well as the resharpening capabilities is real nice as well with this blade and with this steel made here in the US in Golden, Colorado. It can perform, guys. This thing can absolutely do all the tasks that you might ask of an EDC blade

 Hey there everybody, Aaron here, welcome to another episode of Gideon's Tactical. Today we're going to be doing a full field test and review for you, EDC review on this Neus for 2014 Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight. They came out recently with the Native 5, I believe 2013 they may have come out with that with G10 handle scales, now they've come out with a glass reinforced nylon handled version, that's lighter weight, obviously the blade is exactly the same, and we're going to test it out here today. So this is basically an upgrade over the old Native Lightweights that you may know and have seen and even I myself have owned and reviewed here on the channel in years past

Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight: Not Stoked!

 Perhaps the G10 handles are better, we'll see! They should copy the rounded corners from the Delica to make it better

 The choil is the best; hands down better than the Paramilitary/Para in that it's deeper, perfectly 50/50, and locks in so solidly.  However, the corners of the handle are too square making it a near-but-not perfect grip in the hand, the pointy butt end of the handle extends a bit too far to be useful when not using the choil, and handle, while sloped toward the deployment hole, does occlude it a bit. With my Medium size hands, the occluded Spydie hole was actually completely fine; not easy to Spydie flick the knife open anyhow as a lock-back.  Ultimately, if the handle corners were better contoured, I'd keep the knife just for the choil but it was too boxy and uncomfortable

Practical knife but ergonomically second to the Shaman, Delica, or Paramilitary

 The Maximet steel is a high-speed tool steel offering exceptional edge retention. Being a high wear tool steel it also has a very high hardness for good edge stability. Toughness is going to be moderate on this and care will be required to prevent corrosion. We also have our exclusive in CPM REX45 and CPM REX45 is going to be a high-speed tool steel with performance similar to M4 with a very high hardness and exceptional edge stability meaning that you can run a very fine edge for optimal performance

 We're going to start out with the native 5 lightweight. So we've got the same CPM S30V blade as the standard model with a handle of injection molded FRN with bi-directional pattern which is a much less expensive knife to produce as well as being lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant and that bi-directional texturing is going to offer excellent traction for adverse conditions. Otherwise this knife is essentially the same. The hole pattern on the clip is slightly modified but it does still offer four-position carry

 Next up we have the Maximet native 5 lightweight. This one has a stone finish. The Maximet steel is a high-speed tool steel offering exceptional edge retention. Being a high wear tool steel it also has a very high hardness for good edge stability

What's so Great About the Spyderco Native 5?

Poor packaging, stiff opening. Nice choil & CPM S30v are the only positives

 So S30V to S35, no, you're not losing anything and according to Spyderco, you're getting better edge retention. S35VN is ever so slightly tougher than S30V, more resilient to chipping and things like that. And they're both stain resistant. So no, you're not losing anything

7 ounces, which is down from, correct me if I'm wrong guys, I think it's 4.7, another ounce on the one with the liners. That's a big deal and I think it will be a big deal for a lot of people because one of the biggest complaints with the native five was that it was simply too heavy given the overall size of the knife. 4

 You know, the Encosi uses S35VN and I'm fine with that. Oftentimes what it's going to come down to is it's more edge geometry and how it's heat treated that are going to determine, you know, exactly, you know, how well it performs. So S30V to S35, no, you're not losing anything and according to Spyderco, you're getting better edge retention. S35VN is ever so slightly tougher than S30V, more resilient to chipping and things like that

 I never had issues with the lock back not functioning correctly. I just, I love this knife. Just keep in mind, it's not going to have that satisfactory, you know, Spyderco flicky sort of feeling, you know, but you do get this BAM, this bank vault type lock up feeling, you know, when that lock back sets in, it does make this loud like clack. I really like that

 And let's, well, you know, hey, let's just go on into it. Good, bad, and the ugly, as always. So on the good side. The blade steel is S35VN, which is my absolute favorite steel, and the knife is made in Golden, Colorado, USA Earth, which means it's made in the USA, which is a nice thing

 A lot of Spydercos aren't, so I support when they do wank one here. The handle is FRN, fiberglass reinforced nylon. Same thing you're gonna find on your Delica and your Dragonfly and your Mannix and a bunch of other Spydercos. Very, very nice material

 It's slightly heavier than the Delica, but not by much. By about, you know, the difference is about the weight of a U.S. quarter, so it's not really super noticeable
