Listen mostly to 60s and 70s rock. 

Generally happy will sound… but looking for a little more dynamic range and have chronic case of upgraditis. Thinking Rega P3 or 6. Any other thoughts?  Plan to keep cart and speakers as is and prefer new gear to vintage.

Upgrade from Fluance RT81 to what?

 Tracking force, anti-skate and tone arm height are all super easy to adjust on this deck. The default tone arm height was rather low for my Ortofon. I didn't notice if this was the case with the AT-VM95C before removing it. The Ortofon cartridge might be slightly taller though

 I have this turntable hooked up to an ART USB Phono Plus and a pair of Fluance powered bookshelf speakers. Also using a Hudson Hi-Fi acrylic mat. I immediately swapped the AT-VM95C for my Ortofon Blue but trying the AT-VM95C on the deck, I was replacing with this one, it sounded good for a budget cartridge. Overall I'm pleased with the sound

I've mostly had belt drive turntables in the past so I was a little concerned with motor noise affecting the sound here. That doesn't seem to be a problem here. New Turntable Day!!!

  Around back there is a standard 3-prong power cord socket (straight AC, no need for an ugly adapter), RCA outputs, the grounding screw, and a switch to enable or disable the tonearm arm automatic lifting.  The unit sits on four adjustable feet that you can use to get things perfectly level.  A flip-open/lift-off clear dust cover rounds things out with a distinctive bubble section that fits over the tone arm base.  SETUP Setup is pretty much what you’d expect if you’ve ever setup a record player before

Sit the platter over the spindle and slowly lower it into place, screw the tracking force weight onto the back of the tonearm, plug the head shell into the tone arm and tighten it down, and then connect the power, RCA, and ground wires

 The included cartridge sounds good and you can easily upgrade when you’re ready. This unit gives you a great foundation for transitioning into higher-end equipment.

If you have $1000 and you want something that will have as much longevity as possible and will actually have a shot of being your “last” turntable… Technics SL-100C. Given the high quality of rest of your gear, I would recommend you buy the SL-100C along with a VMN95ML stylus upgrade, and pop that on from the beginning.

I’m about to take the plunge into records and want to start with my first and last turntable purchase. I prefer to get it right the first time and not go the route of starter table with a need to upgrade a year or two later. Ideally the table I purchase can be modded and upgraded over time if I feel the need but the table itself is something my kids can enjoy when I’m no longer around.

Sound quality is very important to me but I don’t have dog-like hearing or unlimited funds. My current setup is KEF R3 speakers powered by a Schiit Vidar amp. I’m using both a Schiit Valhalla 2 and Saga for preamp and switch between the two for different uses. My budget is ~$1,000 give or take, and I’ll probably stick with the Schiit line and use a Mani preamp (unless someone talks me out of it). I’m currently eyeing the Rega P2 and P3 but have been reading about them being overpriced in the U.S. market. I’m in the U.S. I’ve also been reading about Fluance tables but keep hearing them referred to as “starter” tables.

Help me decide!

The Technics SL-100C turntable is for the audio enthusiast or audiophile who listens to music intentionally. It is a very focused offering that does one thing, and does it extremely well, it plays vinyl albums.  The intent of the listener is important when choosing audio devices. There are those who have a soundtrack to their life, with music playing in the background or just in their ears throughout the day

  The tonearm is the classic Technics S shaped tonearm. I remember my first encounter with the Technics S in the 80’s on one of their direct drive units. It was good then and it’s better now. The tonearm mount is excellent and helps with vibration damping

  Personally, I’ve turned this feature off via the switch on the back panel.  Were I designing this, I would have eliminated that feature and with the cost savings supplied an Ortofon Red cartridge instead of the Audio Technica. However, the fact that they hit this price point with a model of this calibre is amazing.  If you are an audio enthusiast or an audiophile and you want the best possible vinyl experience, this is the one

 We know that when we’re finished we’ll have to manually stop the turntable and place the tonearm back in its rest. It’s all part of the experience.  The Technics SL-100C does nearly everything it can to provide the best possible audio reproduction. The direct drive motor is excellent as aways in Technic’s offerings

For those who listen with intent

 \- budget for a good cartridge with a good styles in the $150 to $300 range: AT-VM95ML or better, like the AT-VM540ML or Ortofon 2M Blue or Bronze, Nagaoka MP-150, Goldring 1042  or better. Even if you buy a second hand turntable, usually you will have to buy at least a new stylus and you might as well choose a cartridge to your liking.

I’m looking to upgrade my turntable to one in the price range of $1k-$2k. What are my best options and should I be getting one that requires a pre-amplifier that’s not built in? If so which one?

  The SL-100C also has the very cool feature of auto returning the tone arm to rest once the needle hits the runout of a record. It’s not a completely automated turntable, but can save your needle by preventing it from sitting in the runout groove for extended periods of time.  At the end of the day this is the kind of turntable vinyl fans need. It provides insanely clear playback, with a bit more energy then I’m used to hearing from vinyl? Bass tracks are a bit punchier and the music is simply more “forceful”

 I simply can’t see how anyone could possibly be disappointed with anything associated with this turntable. What a work of art, Technics!

 Wow, was I mistaken!  This turntable is SOLID. My MH has their split-plinth design to dampen vibration, but the Technics SL-100C is in a completely different league, AND, it’s a direct drive turntable. My MH is belt-driven and that usually isn’t an issue, until some wants to play one of my 45 RPM singles. I have to pull the platter to change the belt and then change it back again when we go back to LPs

 I remember direct drive turntables costing a small fortune, which is why so many of us used belt-driven TT’s. Technics was the first to offer direct drive way back in the 70’s and they’ve clearly figured out how to do it properly after nearly 50 years of making them. I simply can’t see how anyone could possibly be disappointed with anything associated with this turntable. What a work of art, Technics!
