 It should do you find it mildly rainy conditions, Large zippers have a great action feel, really solid, and I love the Larks Head tied zipper pulls, a very nice touch for quick access. A side pouch will fit a water bottle inside. Straps help cinch the whole pack down, keeping contents from shifting or bouncing around internally. The shoulder straps are well padded in the top, mesh is vented for better air circulation a nice consideration when taking gear out on a hot day

 Where I'm a little torn is on the idea of this being a laptop compatible bag. Having recently played with bags like STM's Drifter where I feel there's a bit more attention paid to that laptop compartment and significantly more back padding I Feel The Surge is a good traveling backpack for carrying gear and for people who might occasionally need to strap a laptop to their backs. For folks who need to tote their notebook computers everyday, however, there might be some better options out there. I'll of course, leave some links down below this video where you can find more info on the Surge to and where you can shop them online as always

 It did a decent job of keeping my 15-inch gaming laptop from slamming into my back, but this is probably the area I Need to criticize the most, having played with a couple tech bags around this price point. I Would definitely appreciate more back padding. There's almost no internal padding protecting a laptop or tablet from bumping into other items in the main compartment. Lastly, the bottom of the laptop sleeve does have a rail of padding to protect your gear from a drop, but it's not the chunky estai played with in this price range either

The surge to showcases a rugged looking build which is instantly recognizable as a North Face product. 8 x 8.3 inches. Women's version is 27L capacity and 18 x 15 x 2 inches. Both bags advertise fitting a 17 inch laptop, however my 16 inch windows laptop (about same thickness as a Macbook pro but maybe a tad wider) barely fits

  I bought the bag for the purpose of being able to put it in the specially padded laptop pocket (and to make it easier on my life going through airports), so I will have to return the women's pack and get the unisex one instead. Otherwise a great backpack and would fit a standard 15.0 inch laptop just fine. My 16 inch pushed it, so I doubt a 17 inch would fit at all

 The zippers close, but the corner of the laptop stresses the zipper enough where it's only a matter of time before it breaks the zipper or the corner of the laptop gets banged up badly. The laptop fits no problem in the main body pocket and you could probably put a neoprene sleeve on the laptop and put it in that main pocket no problem. If the extra bottom padding in the laptop pocket wasn't there, my laptop would fit. But the padding is there especially to help protect laptop from drops/being set down, so it's necessary

 The version i have here is the all black, but you can see all the different options that they have on the company site and then moving into the materials on the exterior. You have a rip, stop nylon that feels pretty lightweight, but like it's still going to hold up well to rougher usage, it also feels like it's going to offer a nice amount of weather resistance, and then you have ykk zippers all throughout the bag that have worked Really smoothly continuing along the outside on the front, as i mentioned earlier, you have webbing that's going to allow you to attach additional accessories with something like a carabiner. This is normally the spot where i would attach my hero clip, but you have two rows of this. Webbing one on each side, so a lot of different ways that you can attach items and then you have on the bottom of the bag, compression straps that are going to allow you to hold something like a yoga mat or maybe a jacket

 You can see my 13 inch macbook pro is getting kind of swallowed up by the compartment, but the sleeve is very well padded. I love that it has the soft fleece lining to help prevent against scratching it's a suspended compartment. So if you place your bag down a little bit harder, your device is going to be well protected and so pulling my laptop out now with the compartment empty. You can get a better look at the inside and so plenty of padding on both sides of the compartment, and it comes up enough to be able to hold a thicker device

A little bit actually before we go too far, you'll see that there are mesh side pockets and if you really stretch it, you could probably fit in a full size, one liter Nalgene easily

 You could put your power blocks and such into here. This is a nice organizer pocket, probably one of the better ones that I've seen and the fact that it's on the outside of the pack, so that you have easy access to. It is really handy now we're in the going into the main compartment and in the main compartment wide open, huge cavernous space here goes all the way to the bottom: there's no other pocket, no kangaroo pockets and anything in here it should easily fit my camera bag, Which I'll have known in just a moment and then behind this we have a zippered pocket or your laptop now what's interesting here is the zipper pocket starts here, sort of bad. If you think of this as being like the clock, it starts at 11 o'clock and then it unzips down to essentially at around 5 o'clock, okay, so and then inside

 Maybe a cell phone and have easy access to it. Okay, so that's actually kind of neat that it has a side pocket for something more than a water bottle all right. Let'S look at this first compartment. This is now oh! No! No! I even making that up here we have this compartment here

 I bought the Surge II, thinking it was an upgrade to her Surge, to replace a TAD Gear Lightspeed I'm getting rid of. I need something to use as a carry on that doesn't scream military and holds all the basics. I was also excited that it has a neoprene slot for a tablet. The Surge II meets my minimum requirements but is very flawed

On the positive side the build quality and materials used are pretty good. I will say the side release buckles feel flimsier, on the Surge II, than the ones on the Surge but they do open easier and smoother. I did not forget about the zipper issue! The zippers are all YKK which basically the best in the biz and it's hard to tell if the zipper wasn't lined up right or wasn't stitched on right. The zipper is the part most likely to fail on almost all bags

Not an upgrade to the regular Surge!

 i backpack a lot so i'm pretty in tune to my preferences with this, and i may have selected something different if any of them fit my laptop size.

-this might be TOO big. with all the extra space in there, if you actually fill it up, i don't think the shoulder straps and waist strap were built for that kind of load. consider that most 17" laptops are going to be about 10 lbs, add a liter of water and your calculator and office supplies and you're carrying something fairly heavy for the wimpy little straps. a lot of Camelbak packs seem to have better padding and load distribution

Background: I bought this specifically because i have a 17" work laptop that is both heavy and difficult to fit in ANY bag. I brought the laptop to REI and this was basically the only bag that fit it into the laptop compartment (as opposed to just shoving it in the main zippered part). I'm female and the women's version of this bag (even though claiming it was for 17" laptops) did not work, so I was stuck with the men's version.
